Game 33: Mets @ Pirates

Pedro Martinez (3-0, 2.61) vs Mike Ricketts (2-2, 6.46)

Pedro Martinez makes his first start in 15 days, and is on a strict 75 pitch count.

"We'll look to get him 5, maybe 6 innings. But not more." Tejesh said.

That plan got short-circuited, as Pedro surrendered 4 runs on 4 hits in the opening inning. Chris Duffy doubled with one down, Jason Bay walked, and Craig Wilson doubled the pair home. Jack Wilson doubled Craig in, and Jose Bautista singled Jack in, putting the Pirates on top, 4-0.

Pedro went 4 innings, and then was pinch hit for by Endy Chavez in the 5th. Chavez walked, Jose Reyes singled, and Jeff Keppinger doubled the pair in, halving the Pirate lead. Jonathan Broxton came in to pitch the 5th, and threw up a 0. The Mets rewarded Broxton, with a 5 run 6th inning. The Mets answered with a 3 run 4th, regaining the lead. David Wright singled and was erased on a Victor Diaz FC, 5-4. Lastings Milledge walked, Lo Duca singled to load the bases, and Glavine walked to force in a run. Jose Reyes then followed with a 2 run single, making it 4-2, NY.

Dotel and Henry Owens built the bridge, but Billy Wagner burned it down. Neil Walker doubled with one down, and scored on Chris Duffy's sac fly, tying the game 7 and 7.

As has been the Mets MO this season, they struck right back in the next frame, scoring a run in the 10th to retake the lead, 8 to 7. Victor Diaz doubled to lead off, Lastings Milledge singled, and pinch hitter Chris Woodward lifted a sac fly to right, scoring Diaz. Aaron Heilman came in to try and nail down the victory.

Heilman, however, also blew the save. Craig and Jack Wilson singled to open the frame, and Jose Bautista walked to load the bases with no out. Jose Castillo lifted a sac fly to tie the game, and Heilman then got out of further trouble, leaving the game knotted at 8.

The Mets struck back once more, this time with a 3 spot in the 11th. Keppinger singled off Kip Wells to lead it off, and scored on Beltran's homer. Wright then hit a one out homer, capping the scoring and putting NY on top, 11-8. Mike Pelfrey tried for the 3rd time to nail it down.

As was the nature of the game, the Pirates scored twice in the bottom of the 11th, this time falling short in their bid to force a 12th. Sean Casey and Chris Duffy singled to lead off the inning, but mercifully (for the Mets), Jason Bay grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Craig Wilson hit a 2 run homer, drawing Pittsburgh to within one, at 11-10, but Jack Wilson grounded out to finally put an end to the insanity.

"Wow. This is the type of game you have nightmares for weeks." Tejesh said.

Game 39: Rockies @ Mets

"We're going to skip Pedro's turn in the rotation this time around. No health concerns, just a little precaution we'll be taking from time to time with our top two."

Luke Hudson (0-0, 4.11) vs Tom Glavine (4-0, 3.35)

David Wright homered to lead off the 2nd, opening the scoring. Lastings Milledge walked and stole 2nd with one down, and Joe Hieptas walked, to put runners on 1st and 2nd. That would be all the scoring in the game, as Glavine went the distance on a 1 hit shutout.

"[Henry] Owens was complaining of a tired arm, so we've curtailed his innings for a while, which is why Octavio has been seeing more action. Not to mention the fact I need to get him some much needed work." Tejesh said.

Dotel pitched a perfect 8th, and the Mets scored a pair in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. Carlos Delgado doubled to lead off and scored on Victor Diaz' single. Miguel Batista (4-2, 2.44) vs Brian Bannister (3-3, 3.80)

Jose Reyes walked, stole second, and scored on Carlos Delgado's 2 out single, putting the Mets on top early, 1-0.

The D'Backs answered with a 3 run 3rd to take the lead. Todd Wilson and Justin Upton singled to lead off, and after back to back grounders by Batista and Shawn Hairston, three straight singles scored 2 runs. Orlando Hudson, Ryan Howard and Conor Jackson all singled to plate a pair, putting Arizona on top, 3-1.

Jackson stole 2nd, and Luis Garcia doubled him in. Wilson walked and Upton singled Garcia in, ending Bannister's night after 4 2/3 ineffective innings. Tanyon Sturtze came in and got the final out of the 5th.

Endy Chavez singled with one down in the 5th, pinch hitting for Sturtze, Reyes, Keppinger and Carlos Beltran all walked to force in a run, but Carlos Delgado and David Wright failed to capitalize on the opportunity, and the Mets settled for a run, cutting the lead to 3. Henry Owens came in to pitch the 6th.

Owens allowed a pair of runs in his inning of work, and the Mets turned once more to Jonathan Broxton to absorb the final 3 innings.

"We hate doing that to him, but we don't have anyone else to go to, having used Sturtze and Owens." Tejesh said.

Broxton worked two scoreless innings, and the Mets got to his spot in the order in the 8th, so Chris Woodward pinch hit and drove in a pair, drawing the Mets back within 3. Tom Glavine came in to pitch the 9th.

"Side effect of the 6 man rotation." Tejesh explained. Glavine worked a scoreless 9th, but the Mets couldnt generate anymore offense, and lost for the 2nd time in a row, their first multiple game losing streak of the season.

"An all around ugly game." Tejesh noted.
