PRESS RELEASE

signjoeydevinezz0.jpg

The Yankees have signed relief pitcher Joey Devine to a three year, minor league contract. He was Atlanta's first round pick in 2005 and quickly rose up through the minors, appearing in the 2005 playoffs on the postseason roster. But his stock fell in 2006, and spent the entire year in the minors. He also complained about not making this years' 25 man roster for the Braves, ripping the organization's decision. The Braves responded by releasing him, and the Yankees decided to pick him up. He has been assigned to AAA Colombus.

Thanks. Just asking if anyone has any constructive criticism on my dynasty, this is fun for me but if I'm posting it here I want you guys to get what you want out of it too.

I couldn't sleep last night, so I decided to sneak in a game of midnight MVP. And my plans just go canceled today, expect a recap today. My life is constantly mixed up in terms of priorities and organization.

Jose Contreras (0-0, 0.00) vs. Philip Hughes (MLB Debut)

april7thboxscorear5.jpg

The future was clear on a bright afternoon in the Bronx, as the Yankees handed the ball to prized pitching prospect Philip Hughes, the savior of the Yankees rotation. The 20 year old has been the center of hype since he was the Yankees' first round pick in 2004 out of Foothill High School in Santa Ana, CA. His 95 mph fastball and excellent breaking pitches helped him climb up the rungs of the minor leagues at an excessive rate. And this year, he figures to be important as he will serve as the back end man in the rotation.

Today's performance shows he will be much more than that in the future, as the flamethrower went seven innings, mustering up a single run to the Chicago White Sox on eight hits, walking one and striking out three. Another impressive stat was that he only threw 73 pitches, 59 for strikes. He left the game with a chance to earn his first MLB victory, but that was before Kyle Farnsoworth imploded in the eighth inning.

But before that, Hughes fired up the crowd as he retired the side in the first with 8 pitches, and fanned Jim Thome with some high heat to pump up the sellout crowd. He also struck out Paul Konerko to lead off the second, but they finally got him for a run in the third, when shortstop Juan Uribe led off with a single and scored on AJ Pierzynski's booming double. But he retired the next three hitters to keep it close.

It was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings as Hughes matched wit for wit with Jose Contreras (4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2BB, 4 K), one of the veteran workhorses on the White Sox and a former Yankee as well. He stifled the Bombers for four innings with his tricky forkball before the Yankees stormed for four runs in the fifth.

Hideki Matsui led off with a single, followed by a Jorge Posada single. Melky Cabrera singled in Matsui, and then Johnny Damon laced the fourth consecutive single of the inning to load the bases. Derek Jeter hit into a fielder's choice which scored Posada to give them a 2-1 lead. After Bobby Abreu walked to reload the bases, Alex Rodriguez singled in two to chase Contreras. Kip Wells (0-1) took the ball and fanned Jason Giambi to end the threat.

The game didn't see another runner cross the plate until the eighth. Hughes allowed a single to Brian Anderson to start the eighth, and Joe Torre jogged out to remove him for setup man Kyle Farnsworth. Hughes tipped his cap to the 50,000+ fans, who demanded a curtain call. But it got scary when Farnsworth's fastball was clocked at only 94 mph. Jim Thome followed up with a base hit, and Paul Konerko was retired. Joe Crede was then put into a 0-2 hole, seeming as if Farnsworth was returning to form. Then he hung a slider over the plate, and Crede knocked it into Memorial Park to tie the game at 4 apiece. The next two hitters were retired to end the eighth.

New York went down in the eighth, and the now dependable Brian Bruney (1-0) threw a perfect ninth inning. But the bottom of the inning was the best part. Nine-hole hitter Melky Cabrera singled to take Kip Wells out of the game, and the lefty specialist Neal Cotts came in to face lefty swinging Johnny Damon. Melky stole second on the first pitch Cotts threw, which was a changeup, combined with Pierzynski's girl arm to nab second base easily. Damon then lined an 2-1 offering past Tadahito Iguchi. Cabrera rounded third aggressively, and Jermaine Dye went after the ball and tried to gun out Melky. But he overran the ball, slipped, and the run scored to end the game 5-4.

White Sox notables:

Joe Crede 3-4, HR, 3 RBI

AJ Pierzynski 2-4, 2B, RBI

Yankee Notables:

Johnny Damon 3-5, Walk-off RBI 1B in 9th

Melky Cabrera 3-4, RBI

how can a pitcher get a curtain call? oh, i guess it doesn't matter.

oh, as always, fantastic dynasty, but i've just noticed some things that could make it better:

first of all, on whatever paint thing you have, you can smudge out the "show" text on the replay.

Also, just to make everything clearer, you should bold the names of all the players in the summaries.

Thanks for the tips abc, I'll make a few changes.

For some reason, my game is crashing at Fenway Park as they are showing the defense for the Red Sox, and I can't play there. So I will sim the games and post a small series recap. And the standings and league leaders won't be up this time because it is too early in the season for it to mean anything or be important.

I split the next two games. I got bombed in Game 2 13-6, Moose got hit hard and Wakefield wasn't too great either. But in Game 3 I won mainly because Pavano had a healthy good game and Wells got drilled in the first inning. Score was 6-2. I am planning on me next real recap being the Red Sox when I am back in the Bronx, or maybe the A's. Who should I play between these next teams?

White Sox (NYY Away)

Red Sox (NYY Home)

Royals (NYY Home)

I decided to recap a Red Sox game at home. What pitching matchup do you wanna see?

Mussina vs. Wakefield - Veteran duel

Pavano vs. Wells - Injury prone vs. Fat drunk guy

Hughes vs. Lester - Classic duel of future aces

EDIT: Going with Hughes vs. Lester, the series finale.

What was expected to be a duel between two future aces facing off in one of the biggest rivalries in the history of professional sports became a one sided pitching clinic as 20 year old Philip Hughes (3-0) dominated the Boston Red Sox lineup with seven innings of six hit, two run ball and fanned seven with free passes en route to the Yankees' 5-2 victory this afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Another rookie, Jon Lester (1-2) got hit moderately hard in his 5 innings of work. He surrendered five hits and four runs, with two walks and just one strikeout. Though he got the short end of the stick, the Red Sox have high hopes for him as he is only a mere 23 years old.

The Yankee offense seemed to click for once, with Johnny Damon going 2-3 to raise his weak average up to .203. He said after the game "It's been a rough start, but I'm getting into the swing of things now and while the average doesn't worry me, I just wanna do my job which is helping my team win ballgames.

Alex Rodriguez added yet another home run, his sixth of the year, in the fourth inning off Lester and notch his Major League leading 30th RBI to give the home team a 1-0 lead. It opened up a bit more in the fifth when Craig Wilson ripped a double in the gap to score two runs, and then Derek Jeter's RBI single brough in Wilson to make it 4-0. But Boston got to Hughes in the sixth and seventh, scoring on a Coco Crisp RBI groundout and Edgar Alfonzo's solo shot to make it 4-2. Hughes was removed in the eighth for Kyle Farnsworth, surrendering two hits but was unscathed. Bobby Abreu added an RBI in the bottom frame to make it 5-2. Mariano Rivera picked up his fifth save with a scoreless ninth.

Pictures coming after school...

Just when I think I am on a roll with this dynasty, everything is set up just right, the format and everything, BAM! comes bad luck.

I overwrote my Yankees dynasty with a fantasy draft I was messing around with! Just when I thought my luck with this dynasty scheme was turning around, this happens. I am so pissed beyond belief right now. Sorry guys, this dynasty is over. Again.

I have just talked myself into doing another dynasty on MVPMods. It will start in 2006, and I will be doing the best I can to quickly get back to 2007. Expect a new thread with the same title to come up soon.
