NDfightingIrish
Eh...even guys like Mussina rely on their fastball to setup their other pitches. I'm not sure there is a pitcher in baseball who doesn't throw more fastballs than anything else. Turma, what did you adjust it to? Are you seeing more strikeouts or just weekly hit balls? Wakefeild :D
boulet430
lol Got me there Irish, got me there! As to the Mo reference, I was aiming at starting pitchers. I'm sure there are multiple relievers who use specialty pitches and don't throw a fastball that often.
turma
Well the pitch generally gets harder for the cpu to hit. It's still not wise to offer a 95er into the middle but when painting the edges there will be more looking strikes, swinging strikes and foul balls. Still if you misexecute the ball will be hit HARD like before, but now I like the fact that the 4-seamer can be used as an out pitch from time to time. boulet430
Did you put it a .5 like he suggested?
turma
I started with a 0.75, just to see how extreme results I can get. Of course I'm decreasing it as I'm seeing how it affects the gameplay to get the most realistic results as possible.
pdub
I would stick with 0.5 because thats what the value for the other pitches are at. I increased both to 0.6 but I'm putting it back to 0.5 because I shut the cpu out the last two games, it was too easy. If its still easy at 0.5, just bump cpu contact up a notch or two until you have good strikeout numbers and it is still a challenge. You can also keep it at 0.75 and up the cpu contact slider until you see good results.

I've never really understood how that slider worked.
pdub
Sorry my words were a bit twisted. What I meant was, You have to compensate for the cpu's skill because your making fastballs harder for them to hit, so you up the cpu contact slider to keep it challenging, while still having realistic strikeout numbers. Upping cpu contact can reduce your strikeouts and increase the cpu's contact quality, allowing them more basehits. Making the change in the datafile does something similar, but only to how the cpu guesses where the pitch is going to be. In short, the higher the value in the datafile, the more strikeouts you will have and the easier games will be against the cpu. Upping the cpu contact slider in-game can keep the computer competitive, but won't reduce the effectiveness of the fastball too much.
turma
0.5 works fine. I'm now getting good results, I'll stick with it.
pdub
I've noticed two new attributes in the <pitcher> section on breaking balls and fastballs. Both values are set to 0, so I think they aren't used. They are "BallBreakingEff" and "BallFastballEff". I am assuming that the "Eff" is short for efficiency. I'm going to change the values and see what happens.
JP_Frost
very interested to see what you come up with pdub, since I'm tired of just striking out 3 batters the whole game.

teampunjabi
Could some1 please point me in the right direction? How would I go about getting the DF compression utility or another program that can edit these dat files?
turma
I actually don't use that program anymore, I use EAZip now. To me it is a bit easier after creating two .bat files. If someone wants EAZip, you can download it here @ nba-live.com. So here is how I use it, if someone feels the need: 1. Put EAzip in you MVP Baseball 2005Data folder, where datafile.txt is. 2.1. Open notepad, paste the following line into the text file eazip -c datafile.txt and save it as compress.bat 2.2. Make a new file and paste the following line into the text file as in 2.1. eazip -u datafile.txt and save it as decompress.bat Now you have two .bat executables, the compress and decompress utilities. What these two do, is the decompress one decompresses the datafile.txt, so you can edit and save it in a text editor like notepad. The compress executable compresses the datafile into the non-editable format MVP Baseball needs it to be in oreder for the game to work. 3. Run decompress.bat (remember to backup your datafile.txt first!) 4. Open datafile.txt with a text editor. Save your changes. 5. Run decompress.bat. Your changes should be saved in the datafile and ready to be tested.
pdub
Nice tutorial. I played a few games with different values for the BallBreakingEff and BallFastballEff but i didn't notice anything different.
kelly_apol
There is one particular setting that I tried once in the datafile. It turns the fastball in to the mean pitch it should be. It allows pitchers whose main pitch is the fastball, but not a real intimidating one, to still get swinging and looking strikes. It makes the game a little bit easier though. datafile line: 0x751d920f which is the <cpubatter> line. The number of the value is "4" so change the number after 4. It should look like - ;3 0.5;4 0.2(or another number) There is a value called FBPitchPathErr. It means Fastball Pitch Path Error. If you increase it, you will get more efficiency out of your fastball. I had the same problem as you, then I discovered it. It was at 0.2 and I changed it to 0.5. The number 3 value on this line is PitchPathErr which is for all other pitches. I been looking for this line the whole day and i cant find it in the notepad text. please help me? pdub
Use wordpad, its better. Make sure you have decompressed your datafile.txt file first using DFCompUtil or eazip. Open the datafile in Wordpad, then press "CTRL+F" and the "Find' window comes up. Type "<cpubatter>" without the quotes in the box and click find. The line you need to edit should now have "<cpubatter> highlighted.
turma
And make sure you are at the top of the file since if you have already scrolled to the bottom it may ignore it if it's above your tyoing cursor. I really like how the tweak affected my game, never going back.

jp_hidalgo
I've also noted that is impossible to play recreating a pitcher like Randy Johnson or Billy Wagner... even Maddux on his best days. The game doesn't allow to create a pitcher with awesome control and hard to hit for HR. And the game doesn't allow to create a strikeout pitcher (with 12k per game)... That's the worst thing for MVP I think.

That's the worst thing for MVP I think. With the my datafile tweak, it is ALOT easier to strikeout batters. If you apply it, you could be getting 10+ K's a game. But that is unrealistic because you can do it with mediocre pitchers who aren't strikeout-pitchers. Thats why I said to increase computer contact because it lowers the strikeouts and compensates for the lack of computer hitting after applying the fastball tweak. Try it, you might enjoy it.
