NDfightingIrish
Im looking into a new videocard to update my geforce fx5500. Ive been reaserching and have found these two cards to be reasonable. XFX GeForce 6800 Xtreme Link and Diablotek Radeon X1600 Pro Link Obviosly I do not want to spend alot of money but i am looking for a half way decent card to make a noticable upgrade Also I just ordered a new monitor with dvi and my current videocard does not support dvi so that is a factor into why im upgrading The only games I play on PC are MVP, Madden, and counter strike source Any reviews on these card or other reccomendations will be greatly appreciated

gangstar
Hey, ND I think you should go with the 6800 just because they are dependable and reliable(I own one myself) and is fine for current gaming standards. The ati cards(x1600) are less reliable overall, I've had a few fail on me. They are higher powered but more of a risk since they do fault more then the nvidia(6800). So go with the 6800! Maestro23
Just built a new rig myself. I have the ATI X1600 Pro -512mb (ATI, not 3rd party w/ATI chipset) and have had no probs myself with it. I have thrown all the latest games at it and it has not blinked. Just as Gangstar has not had good fortune with ATI in the past, I know people who have/have not had good success with Nvidia. I've used Nvidia in the past and had good success, just decided to switch flavors this time when I built my new rig. It's really just preference man. Either one of those card you listed will make your games rock.
gangstar
I'm not saying it wont rock BUT, XFX is a much better 3rd party manufacturer then diablotek.

Best of the two 3rd party cards. That 6800 will go good with your new LCD. Playing your games will be like a breath of fresh air. When you get everything up and running, let us know how everything runs and looks.

I told you... playing your games now will be like a breath of fresh air. If you like Counter-Strike, you should look into Battlefield 2. Awesome game. Like you, I can't wait either for the 06 Mod to drop this weekend. Finally get my dynasty going. Again, glad you got your stuff and everything's working OK. :wtg:

Maestro , you seem to know a lot about computers and I am planning to build my own soon...so would you suggest building a computer or buying one off a retailer found off newegg.com etc? When I check newegg / pricewatch computer prices it costs about 600 dollars for a good system , I'm hoping building my own computer will cost considerably less (maybe 400-500!?). NDfightingIrish
what settings do you use on counterstike guys (resolution, antialiasing, antisotropic ect.) Also, Maestro the monitor never came with a dvi cable :x so I had to buy one on ebay. Brand new 15$ . All's well
ixcuincle
1024 x 728 , antialiasing max , anistropic ...works even on a 32 mb video card. The only problem is my laptop will "overheat" after about 30 min of css so :(
NDfightingIrish
oo thats to bad, I read that high aa and af settings will decrease performance, thats why I was asking.
Maestro23
Hey ixcuincle, thanks for the compliment, but there are far smarter people out there than me when it comes to building systems. I just read alot. I'm a programmer by nature. It's always better to build a system if you can. Because you get/buy exactly what you want. Unless you find a system setting with what you want and within your price range. I do alot of my online shopping at newegg.com Love that site. Also tigerdirect.com is good too. What are you looking at right now?(processor, memory, etc...) Are you going to use any of your hardware that you have now in the new system?
