Taking Down the Beasts of the East 3.0: Blue Jays Dynasty

With the trade deadline now passed, I have decided to start a new dynasty with all the recent moves. I did a little creativity with guys in the Jays system to make it a bit more interesting.

Following a very active off-season, the Jays are poised to challenge for the AL East penant with new additions:

3B Troy Glaus

1B Lyle Overbay

SP A.J. Burnett

C Bengie Molina

RP B.J. Ryan (closer)

and several young players looking to make their marks

The Jays field the following team to start the 2006 season:

Rotation:

Roy Halladay

A.J. Burnett

Ted Lilly

Gustavo Chacin

Dustin McGowan (cracked the team out of spring training)

Bullpen:

Scott Downs (long man/spot starter)

Brandon League

Jeremy Accardo (acquired for Shea Hillenbrand)

Scott Schoeneweis

Pete Walker

Justin Speier (setup)

B.J. Ryan (closer)

Lineup vs. RH:

Aaron Hill 2B

Frank Catalanotto LF

Vernon Wells CF

Troy Glaus 3B

Lyle Overbay 1B

Alex Rios RF

Eric Hinske DH

Bengie Molina C

John McDonald SS

Lineup vs. LH:

Reed Johnson LF

Aaron Hill 2B

Vernon Wells CF

Troy Glaus 3B

Alex Rios RF

Bengie Molina C

Lyle Overbay 1B

John Hattig DH (cracked camp out of ST)

John McDonald

Just before the first game, the Jays announced that reliever Pete Walker blew out his shoulder in Spring Training and will require season ending surgery. The injury could potentially be career-ending since he is now in his late 30s. Francisco Rosario was called up to take his spot on the active roster. 2B/3B Ryan Roberts also cracked camp with the team and will be the backup infielder while Russ Adams got demoted to AAA. Roberts spent all of last season with AA New Hampshire. Gregg Zaun will start the season as the back up to Bengie Molina. The season will open with a 3-game series against the Minnesota Twins. Roy Halladay will take on Johan Santana.

Note: I probably won't actually start the dynasty until Thursday night or even Friday.

I'm not going to start this dynasty for a while since my exams are coming up this week and next week so I'll probably start it after my exams are finished. I'll change my lineups again. I'm gonna send Hattig back to AAA and try to find another guy to be the RH half of the DH platoon.

I made the following moves:

To AAA:

RP Francisco Rosario

3B/1B John Hattig

Called up:

RP Jason Frasor

LF/DH John-Ford Griffin

Griffin will come off the bench and could see time at DH if Hinske struggles early. Hattig will be starting at DH and 3B in AAA. Eric Hinske will play everyday as the DH and spell Overbay or Glaus in the field at times.

I also released 3B/Utilityman Tim Olson from my AA team. There's really no room for him and if guys weren't injured we wouldn't have acquired him at all.

I've moved Eric Hinske to the Red Sox and recalled switch-hitting 3B/1B John Hattig again. Also OF Tony Miller has been promoted to AAA. Various other moves within my dynasty have been made (within my minors) as a result of those trades. I'm actually going to begin my dynasty today.

Rough Inning Dooms Jays

5/4/06 -- TORONTO, Things were looking good early on for the Jays when they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Lyle Overbay. The lead would be short-lived, however, the Twins came back to tie in the top of the third when Shannon Stewart belted a solo home run on a hanging curveball from A.J. Burnett. The Jays would regain the lead in the fourth when Alex Rios and Aaron Hill both drove in runs, giving the Jays a 3-1 lead. In the fifth, Troy Glaus hit a 2-run home run, his second of the season to make it 5-1.

It looked like the Jays were going to cruise to an easy victory although something was clear for much of the game, Burnett was not his sharpest but he managed to escape trouble on several occassions, until the seventh inning anyway. The Twins exploded in the inning scoring eight times off Burnett and two relievers to jump out to a 9-5 lead. The Jays made it interesting the ninth when Vernon Wells hit a 2-run shot off Joe Nathan, but that would be as close as it would get as the Jays ultimately fell 9-7 to the Twins.

Club House Talk

"I just couldn't spot my 4-seamer for a strike. When you don't have command of your best pitch, it's tough to keep them off the scoreboard all game." -> Jays starter A.J. Burnett

"I thought I was going to get pulled several times in the game but I managed to hold them to just five runs, just long enough to mount a comeback." -> Twins starter Brad Radke

Outlook

Southpaws Ted Lilly and Francisco Liriano will be matched up against eachother in the rubber match of the series.

Box Score

Note: I forgot to take screenshots so the report had to be typed up like this.

I played 3 games and lost 2 of the 3. I'm getting tired and it's late so I won't write up the report.

Box Score (Lost 8-0)

Synopsis: Liriano shut me down. I just couldn't hit him well at all.

Box Score (Won 6-4)

Synopsis: I roughed up Jae Seo and got a much needed victory.

Box Score (Lost 8-2)

Synopsis: Couldn't get much going this game. I kept it close but in the 9th, the bullpen let them blow it wide open.

Following the third game, reliever Brian Tallet was sent down to AAA and reliever Francisco Rosario has been recalled.
