liteskin
Wood to Start Season in AAA It seems Kerry Wood feels he needs more time on his newly repaired shoulder. The oft injured fireballer is going to be starting the season in Iowa with the Cubs AAA affiliate. "I feel I need to get more innings in" said Wood after practice "I want to make sure I'm 100 percent ready before I go to Chicago." Wood will pitch the second game of the season for the Iowa Cubs. When asked about whether he (Wood) will go to the bullpen when he returns to Chicago, Wood said this. "I'm a starting pitcher, that's what I came in the league as and that's what I want to end my career as."

liteskin
Cubs Blitzed in Season Opener Cincinatti, OH -- The Reds brought their hitting shoes with them from spring training. They pounded out 15 hits to plate 13 runs in a 13 - 4 rout of the Cubs. Carlos Zambrano seemed to still have his mind in Arizona, along with his control. Zambrano worked 3 innings and gave up 12 runs on 12 hits and 3 homers. Getting into the homerun derby was Brandon Philips, Edwin Encarnacion, and Adam Dunn. "I just didn't have it today, I left alot of pitches out there to hit" said a distraught Zambrano. "Somedays are better than others. Sometimes you kick butt, and sometimes you get your butt kicked" said Dusty Baker. Mark Prior goes for the Cubs tomorrow. The Reds will counter with high-kicking Bronson Arroyo. turma
Ouce, that's a rough three innings to begin with. Now his era is messed up for a while Good luck bouncing back the next game. OT: I have trouble hitting against Arroyo, his windup is too stupid looking to hit properly.
liteskin
Reds Continue to Smack Cubs Around Cincinatti, OH -- The Cubs were again handed their lunch at the hands of Bronson Arroyo and the Reds offense. Mark Prior made it to the 6th inning but gave up 8 earned runs on 11 hits. "I don't know what to say, except thank God its the second game of the year" said Prior The Cubs offense was handcuffed all day by Arroyo. Arroyo struck out 8 in 7 1/3 innings while only giving up 5 hits. "My breaking ball was really sharp today, and I was locating my fastball well. You add those two together and that equals a pretty good outing" said Arroyo The Cubs pitching gave up 3 more homeruns today. Adam Dunn hit his second in as many days. Royce Clayton and Ryan Freel each notched their first. The Cubs go home to play St. Louis and try to put this atrocious 2 game series behind them. turma
Whoa, hope you pick it up the next game, though it could be even tougher against the Cardinals.
liteskin
Cards Spoil Cubs Home Opener Chicago, IL -- The hits are just not coming for the Cubs. Worse than that is the pitching. The Cubs ran out rookie starter Rich Hill today. The man with the Zito-like curveball couldn't find the plate. "I don't want to say anything to get me in trouble" said Hill. "Let's just say I thought the strike-zone was from the knees to the chest and the width of the plate...apparently I was wrong" Hill pitched 5 innings walking 2, and giving up 4 runs on 4 hits. The Cubs offense seems to still be in spring training. Jeff Suppan allowed the Cubs 1 run on 7 hits through 7 innings. "We just have to keep playing hard, we're only in our 3rd game. There is a whole lot of time" said Derrek Lee. Time maybe something this team doesn't have much off. The fans want to see wins. After being so close in 2003 and so bad last year, the fans are anxious to see this team turn the corner. And quite frankly...so am I. liteskin
Cubs Play Better, Still Lose Chicago, IL -- The Cubs make it 4 losses in a row today as they fall to the Cards 6 - 4. However, the Cubs did show signs of live on the offense. They hit their first homeruns of the year. One coming off the bat of Derrek Lee and the other from Ronny Cedeno. "I don't care about homeruns, I just want to win." said a visibly upset Cedeno. Derrek Lee mentioned that alot of people are going to have to step up and turn this thing around. "You can't fall to far behind these teams in the central. They are all capable of running away and hiding" said Lee. Cubs rookie pitcher Sean Marshall had a decent day. He went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs on 3 hits. He gave up a bomb to right to Albert Pujols. "It was 3-0 and I threw a change-up and he hit it out to right field. I couldn't believe it. I guess that's why he's Albert Pujols and I have a lot to learn" said Marshall. The Cubs got to Cards rookie Anthony Reyes who gave up 4 runs on 7 hits. Tomorrow the Cubs throw yet another rookie. AA call up Carlos Marmol. "He's got a live fastball and a sharp 12-6 curve, I just hope he can get them over the plate" said Baker. Well all do, Dusty...we all do. liteskin
Cubs Lose Close One, Fifth In a Row Chicago, IL -- Today the Cubs came up a little short. They fell to the Cardinals 8 - 7. Although the offense played well, once again the pitching came up short. Rookie Carlos Marmol made his first start. Admitting before the game his nerves "wouldn't allow him to sit still", he showed that on the mound. Going into several 3 ball counts, allowing the Cardinal hitters to sit back and wait for the fastball. The Cardinals notched 14 hits, but only one homer. Which is a small victory for the Cubs. Albeit said home run was hit by David Eckstein, the most unlikely player to hit one on the team. "He threw me a fastball belt-high, and I just put a good swing on it." said Eckstein. Marmol went 5 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs. Glendon Rusch and Bobby Howry came in and threw gasoline on a already smoldering fire, giving up 4 runs combined. "Marmol didn't pitch bad, the bullpen just couldn't hold them." said a rather distraught Dusty Baker. The Cubs did bang out 13 hits, 2 of which were homers by Barrett and Mabry. Mabry's coming in the pinch hit variety on the first pitch he saw. The Cubs have the day off tomorrow, then host the Reds. Cincinatti treated the Cubs rather rudely in Cincy, sweeping the Cubs in a 2 game series. The Cubs are looking for a little payback. liteskin
The MD datafile with the harder pitching is killing me. I'll be sailing along, then I miss the green area by a little bit and the dreaded red circle shows up over the plate...I close my eyes as to not see the carnage, then I hear "He crushes that one!" I'm slowly getting used to it.
liteskin
Cubs Finally Win Game, World Series Hopes Intact Chicago, IL -- The won't be any 0-14 start this year. The Cubs finally won a game, beating the Reds 4 - 2. Finally the pitching held its own. In recent games the offense was doing its part, but the pitching was falling short. However, this time, Zambrano showed why he is the ace of the staff. Zambrano went 7 innings giving up 2 runs while scattering 8 hits. He also struck out 5, while walking none. "I was embarrassed by my last outing, I was determined to win this time" said Zambrano. Zambrano lowered his 33.00 era to a miniscule 11.70. The bullpen consisted of Wuertz, Ohman, and Dempster pitching 3 hitless and scoreless innings. Dempster notched his first save in his first save opportunity of the year. "Feels good to finally contribute, hopefully this is the first of many" said Dempster. The offense did just enough to get by a tough Bronson Arroyo. Scoring all 4 runs in the 4th after the Reds scored their 2. The inning consisted of 5 hits, all singles, and some good sacrifices. Even Zambrano notched an RBI on a sharp single to left. "We played team ball today...plain and simple. When the guys pick each other up, we are a pretty good team" said Baker. The Cubs once again host Cincinnati. The will send out 0-1 Mark Prior against 1-0 Eric Milton. Boxscore
liteskin
Cubs Win Streak at 2 Chicago, IL -- The Cubs are rolling now. The won their second in as many days yeterday. Besting the Reds 5 - 4. Prior pitched descently. He gave up 4 runs on 9 hits and only struck out 1 the whole game. "Some days you don't have your best stuff, this was one of those days" said Prior The offense faired pretty well against Eric Milton. The Cubs banged out 10 hits which resulted in 5 runs. The big bat of the day going to Derrek Lee. He went 3-5, with a run and 2 rbis. Including the game winner, which came against Eddie Guardado, scoring Juan Pierre from second. "I worked the count in my favor and looked fastball. He gave me one on the outside part of the plate, I just went with to right." said Lee. A good solid win for the Cubs. They go for the series sweep tomorrow. Boxscore
