Square one: A D-Rays "re-expansion" dynasty

If you saw my previous topic about an expansion dynasty, you'll know what this is about. If not, just keep reading as I update and hopefully it'll be come clear.

I had promised to start use UR7.3 for the dynasty, but I need the plus version, and without the .mbe file, as well as the models.big (which I can't get as long as the downloads are off line), I'll just make the last couple of moves with my already-updated 7.2 and go from there.

Also, I can't promise to spend the same amount of time on images as I did for the initial story as I go along, but I'll at least try and get a handle on the box score extractor and some "plays of the game" pics. It's my first dynasty (for baseball at least. I've done some hockey ones in NHL 04-06), so bear with me as I evolve this on the fly.

Just a quick update. I meant to post the list of players I selected, but I ended up being way busier than I thought today. I barely had enough time to cobble everything together in MVPedit, so hopefully tomorrow I'll finish that up and have the next dynasty post with the draft results and its aftermath.

I recently found that my ISP is kind enough to give me a little bit of free webspace, so once I tinker with that, I'll have a website where I can post extra things that won't fit here.

#1 on that list will be a more in-depth look at the draft I did and how all the players I picked fit into the puzzle.

I'll also have looks at my rotation and lineups for the Devil Rays here soon. For now I'm finally going to play my first game of the dynasty (vs Baltimore, if I'm not mistaken) and *fingers crossed* figure out the Box Score Extractor.

Oh, and by the way, all those trades were done with fair trades on. I figure I probably overpaid in a couple of places (ie Clement for Bush) but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to draft someone talented, even if I didn't want them, and other deals I tried fell through (I feverishly tried to package Clement with some of my more unnecessary pieces to get Justin Morneau, but to no avail). As for picking up Votto and Thorman, I have a thing for getting Canadian players.

EDIT: I have no idea why the picture shrank the way it did. I didn't do anything different from the first one. I'll look at fixing that later.

EDIT 2: Success! Everything should be readable now.

I can't read the last one, but so far the dynasty is looking strong. I like how it's angled from an ESPN writers perspective.

Yeah, neithe can I. Photobucket keeps on resizing the image once I upload it. It's definately not too big though. Photobucket allows anything up to 1MB, and this is nowhere near that. I'm going to give it another go with imageshack and see if that makes a difference.

EDIT: Ok, everything should be working fine now.

sounds awesome maybe ill do something like this 2 could u pm me with exactly wat u did

good luck with this expansion

Sure thing. Basically I made up the expansion draft rules out of a combination of the rules MLB used for the Devil Rays/Diamondbacks expansion drafts, and some borrowed elements from NHL expansion drafts (the part about having to leave enough players of various positions unprotected). Then I went through all the rosters I was drafting from with MVPedit and made a list of players I thought would be protected by each of the 29 other teams based on the rules I set out.

After I did that, I went back again, and did my "draft" picking one player per team to take for my club, trying my balance need for certain positions with taking steals (like how my rules forced the Angels to leave Kelvim Escobar unprotected. I seriously hadn't counted on anything like that happening when I made the rules. But when I was making LAA's protection list, I realized I had to leave at least 1 SP available, and it seemed like Colon, Lackey, Santana, and Weaver all had reasons to be kept over Escobar). I also made sure to remember that in my case I had to pass on picking from a certain number of teams in order to not go over 25 players per roster. I had actually picked too many the first time through, so I went back and cut guys who I felt I didn't necessarily need.

Once I had all my players picked, I went into MVPedit and made all the changes, releasing all the Devil Rays players I was dumping to free agency, then moving all my selected players to the tampa organization. The final thing was to go through the other rosters in MVP edit and make sure there were no errors (ie right number of players, correctly filled out rosters, and so forth). I had to delete a slew of free agents to fit all my released D-Rays, so I made sure to cut guys I figured were not going to play again, and random players who simply weren't that good.

It's a bit of a tedious process to do, taking me about a combined 4 hours over 3 days, but after playing my first game, I had a lot more fun with this team than I have with others I've used before.

BTW, I'll have a game recap either later tonight or tomorrow. I didn't have time to set up box score extractor, so I got some screenshots of the info which I can chop up into useful stuff.

However, I found that a bunch of the shots I took were missing the players, I just have screencaps of empty field. So not as many highlights as I wanted.

Low-rent post game for a lack of time and tools this time around. I had hoped to do something more extravagant, but I didn't want to leave it too long.

Yes, I am aware of the irony of an ESPN article which uses the box score image from the game with a FOX overlay. But since I didn't have time to make it right, it's the best I could do with whatI had.

A couple of notes I forgot to add to that article:

Texas signed former Rays catcher Dionner Navarro. Terms undisclosed (ie it happened before the game, and I never noticed the contract terms on the ticker.). Navarro was assigned to Texas' AAA affiliate.

Milwaukee signed CF Rocco Baldelli to a 2 year contract worth $4.5 million per year. He was then assigned to AAA Nashville (I hope they enjoy spending $4.5 million for a AAA outfielder...)

I promise tomorrow afternoon I'll get the box score extractor up and running and hammer out a more pleasing template for post-game wrap-ups.

i think you should trade for a catcher, it doesn't look like you have much.

That's what I thought, but surprisingly through two games Ross is doing surprisingly well. I'll give it a few more games to see if he can keep going, then I'll consider a trade if needed.

abless, PM me your e-mail address and I can send you the file I used. The only catch is that it's an excel spreadsheet and I can't get it to convert properly into anything else.

DUnit - David Ross is still going strong for me, so I think I might hold off on getting a new catcher for now.

Also, I'm going to hopefully have something a littel different ready for posting later tonight, before I get into the next series.

I'm only 4 games in, but I've come to a conclusion: I can't do this. I've meant to keep up with all my posts the last few days, but other concerns have left me without the time to do so. Tack on the facts that I'm back to college in like 2 and half weeks, and that there are other games coming out that are going to monopolize some of my time (NHL 07 primarily), and it all means that I don't think I'll have the time to keep going.

I'll probably keep playing the dynasty, but I'll benefit from having the freedom to sim games and not have to write up reports and whatnot after every game. It's not a huge concern for me to find an hour or so to play a game every couple of days, but when I have to add an extra hour or more to photoshop all the stuff I need to get this done, I just don't know if I can keep going.

The other thing is that doing this slows down my pace. I left the first game of the Jays series for two days even though I had time to play it, just because I hadn't had an opportunity to do my writeups.

So to whoever was reading this, I'm sorry to stop. I probably should've figured all this out before I started.
