Must Watch Baseball Movies

Rookie Of The Year was pretty good I guess. I hated The Sandlot, half of the movie has nothing to do with baseball.

But that's sort of the point. That's the reason I prefer baseball movies to football movies, or hockey movies, or virtually any other kind of sports movie. There's something about the game of baseball that encourages filmmakers to dig beneath the "do we win or lose" surface into subject matter that gives us a deeper glimpse of humanity.

Did anyone say Bingo Long and his Travelling All-Stars?

Angels In The Outfield (the one with Danny Glover)

The Babe

The Bad News Bears (original)

Bang The Drum Slowly

The Benchwarmers

Bull Durham

Cobb

Eight Men Out

Fever Pitch

Field Of Dreams (this is the best baseball movie of all-time)

Game 6

Hustle

The Jackie Robinson Story

A League Of Their Own

Major League

Mickey (with Harry Connick Jr.)

Mr. 3000

The Natural

The Rookie

The Sandlot

Not all of these movies are incredible but they are worth a watch.

That's an awesome list. I totally forgot about Mr. 3000 and The Benchwarmers. Not to mention A League of Their Own and Field of Dreams. Man, there's some good baseball movies out there. Netflix here I come...

One other I'd like to add, Hardball. Now that's a movie.

What about Mr. Baseball, that movie with Tom Sellick?

From what I remember, it was alright.

I still have it on VHS.

or...

The Fan, with Wesley Snipes.

Whatever, I just found this page with a bunch of movies on it.

http://www.bostonbaseball.com/whitesox/bas...ras/movies.html

I've never seen th fan so I didn't put it on. I thought Mr. Baseball kinda sucked, it wasn't all that funny, or good. I mean Benchwarmers isn't one of the best movies of all-time, but it was pretty funny.

Bull durham is indeed the best baseball movie of all time....barely and i mean barely beats out field of dreams but only because bull durham deals more with the inner workings of baseball. Although its a lot better if your a pitcher or catcher.

So many memorable quotes from that movie...

"First lesson, dont think. It can only hurt the ballclub"

Field of Dreams is the BEST EVER

This old cub is amazing also

Bull Durham

Major League 1&2

A League of their Own

i dont know how u can consider fever pitch a baseball movie, its a love story and doesn't even show that much baseball. i still liked the movie however, just not as a baseball movie.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "The Winning Team." Just kidding, that's probably the worst. You got Ronald Reagan as Grover Cleveland Alexander, Doris Day as his wife, and Frank Lovejoy as Rogers Hornsby (who is a real nice guy in this movie). This was made in about 1952, so you've got to dig for it.

Seriously though, I'd like to see someone make a better version of a movie about Ty Cobb. "Cobb", based on the Stump book, was good, but you could do a really good period piece on this guy. And hopefully they wouldn't cast Russell Crowe as the lead. :)

I havent seen the new Fever Pitch, but you guys know its based on an semi-autobiographical book and film set in London during Arsenals League winning season, right? By Nick Hornby, the same guy who wrote "about a boy".

I hope they had a good rewriter, because it's not jut a love story with a winning ending, it had loads of little insights too, of how it felt to be a fan that year.

My favorite baseball movie is Bleacher Bums. It was a made-for-showtime movie that I caught once. It's almost impossible to find on TV or in stores, but it's available on Amazon for $10. It's about a group of Cubs fans sitting in the bleachers for a game against the Cardinals.

Of course, MLB wouldn't agree to license the movie, so it's not the Cubs and Cardinals. It's the Bruins and Eagles. And instead of Sammy Sosa, there's Manny Losa. Rod Beck is Todd "Give 'Em Hell" Heck. And Big Mac is Mike McGwinn (or something like that).

It's a great movie about baseball, gambling, and life in general. And of course, it provides the necessary hot female character.

The others on my top 5 list, in no particular order, would be Major League 1 & 2, 61*, and Rookie Of The Year (because it was my favorite movie when I was younger).
