patch(s) question

are the official patches improvements to the game, bug fixes, just roster updates, or all of the above? i used somebody's roster from last year (i think it was ultimate rosters - i'm not sure) and i edited all of the players to suit my needs and gave the roster a new name, so i really don't need or want new rosters. do i still need to download and install these 5 patches? i keep hearing about game crashes to the desktop. i think i had that problem when i tried playing the game a couple of months ago (pc version) but i've since uninstalled and reinstalled the game and have been editing for the last couple of months and haven't tried playing the game since i reinstalled it. if i have to install the patches, does patch 5 include all of the other patches or do i have to install them in order one at a time? i clicked on the update bar in the game cd opening screen and all it did was take me to an ea site that had a bunch of ads. i clicked on support and went through that process but didn't see anything that showed patches.
