When your gym becomes a hazard zone....

There is a question at the bottom of the post, so if you want to skip my story, feel free, you wont be missing much :)

I was wondering if any of you go to gyms and how your experience is with the gym you belong to?

Backstory: I belong to the NY YMCA for about 10 years. It started off as a great place. Very family oriented. Alot of elderly people, which may sound horribly boring, but it kept the jerks away.

About 2 years ago, the stupid gym decided to hold an open/free initiation. No fee to join. At this point, every derelict, every piece of white trash, and every overgrown whiny steroidal jerk joined.

A typical day at my gym involves tripping over weights thrown on the floor, avoiding weights as they are being thrown on the floor, and listening to people grunt and scream as they lift weights too heavy for them, and then the loud crash of the throwing those weights on the floor (yes, an awful lot of throwing occurs)

The indoor track there is another disaster. If there isnt a 16 year old couple holding hands on the 2 lane track like its lovers lane, there is some moron jumping rope on it, or another person who decides its cool to run barefoot, or today, a man who took resistance ropes, tied them to the ledge, and was throwing punches out towards the running lanes. (and gave me dirty looks for having the audacity of trying to run!)

The staff turns a blind eye to all of this (as evidence by my many complaints, and nothing is ever done)....

(Before anyone asks, yes, I will be quitting soon, but thats not the point of this)

My question is now: I do live in New York City, and yes, we have a much higher idiot quota than the rest of the country. But I was wondering how anyone elses gym relates? Do you guys see consistent problems such as this? Or is there much better structure and discipline amongst members you see??

I go to a local gym in manhattan and because it is in an area where nobody really goes around, I go in, do my exercises and my 4 miles on a bike and I leave. I'm registered until Feb. 2007, so I can go in as many times as I want

I was going to sign up at the YMCA because all my friends went there, but I went to check it out, and it's really the same thing as micheal said. There's white trash everywhere weights on the floor, and typical kids tryin to act gangsta, you know, the rich kids that are about 12, wit all the chains, hats tilted to the side, that if you go up and say BOO, they would run off to there moms and dads. I don't need that kind of **** if I'm gona work out.

Anyway, this new gym opened about a block away from there, and about two blocks from my house, and I'm going to check it out on Friday. From what I heard, they have state of the art machines. It's small too. Not only that, but it's cheap!

Kc nice sig.

I'd be willing to challenge you about that idiot quota in New York.... you'd be surprised at how many stupid people roam Philadelphia, not to mention its suburbs.

As for what NYM06 said about most 12 year old kids these days, around here, you would expand that age group from 12 to about 25. I find it ridiculous how the public standard has degraded over the past few years.

Back to the actual topic, do you guys prefer to ride an exercise bike or treadmill instead of taking a long jog? I'm thinking of trying a gym out, since most of my conditioning training for soccer season has me running up and down hills around the neighborhood.

news flash! a lot of people in the world are idiots, as you get older, you will see there are more and more out there. The best thing to do is just find your place, find your close friends, keep an eye out for other worthwile people, and stay goal oriented as it is the way to sucess.

I prefer a track....because the surface is less strain on my knees. A treadmill, ive noticed, is alot of "banging" so to speak....I feel like im galloping and my knee tends to hurt more from it (I have a strained meniscus in my left knee)

A bike is alot less strain, but also just focuses on your legs, where a run will also work out your abdomen a little, and your whole body more for aerobic activity.

Have you ever tried an elliptical? It is just like a treadmill in that it is a running motion, but there are 3 main differences; ellipticals are a full body workout, they are basically maintenance free, unlike a treadmill, and it is exponentially better than a treadmill because you aren't picking up and setting down your legs, which helps people a lot with bad knees/hips/feet/etc.

Yeah, I tend to alternate with that....honestly I just get bored of it. I like to be "in motion"....where I at least have the illusion of going somewhere (like on a track), to fool myself into a change of scenery :)

Thanks for the info! Right now, I have a high ankle sprain, so I won't be able to try anything as of yet. I do actually own an elliptical, and I do jump rope occasionally, so I will try these next year.

I have a partially torn or sprained achilles, so I can't do much and walking makes my achilles sore.

Ouch. I know when you completely tear your achilles, its one of the most painful injuries you can get...I wouldnt want to sprain mine for fear it would tear completely

To be honest, I don't really know, but it's something in the heel of my right foot that's causing me pain, especially when I push off of that foot like when I pitch, when I'm in my windup (I have a kevin brown-esque windup), or when I'm stretching.

I gotta get this checked out, but I haven't had the time. I'm hoping a few weeks of rest will heal it up, but I don't know what's going on.

I couldn't have said this any better. Wow. My credo.

It's always best to have a specialist look at it. I had no idea I had a high ankle sprain until I saw the orthopedic surgeon on Monday, which was a little bit of a scare.
