Black Hole in Add/Remove Programs

Recommended Posts

The title says it all, very weird:

blackholese7.png

If I scroll through it quickly, it looks kind of like a checkered flag. I can also select it but I cant remove it. Once I click on it, the colors change from black and white to blue and gold. Very strange, please post if you have a suggestion.

Never seen anything like that. Sometimes I get that in iTunes when I minimize MVP to change the song, but they all come back when I click on it. If you can't find a solution, when in doubt, restart your computer. It can work wonders.

restarting doesnt work, this has always been there. It takes up an incredible amount of space in the Add/Remove programs window.

you seem to have some really weird PC issues there. how often do you run routine maintenance on it? my first hunch would be some type of registry error. try downloading CCLEANER (freeware) and running it. it should clean out all the crap on your system and has a tool that removes registry redundancies an errors. then defrag.

i'm not saying you don't but the issues you are having are problems i see from clients of mine who don't do routine maintenance.

my second hunch would be some type of infection. which would go hand in hand with lack of maintenance.

i wouldn't even bother contacting the pc company. chances are if you can even understand whatever form of english they speak, you won't get the answer you want to hear.

you can always send the PC to me i charge home users $75 an hour plus parts... :)

I am very diligent about doing things such as checking the hard drive for errors, defragmenting, running anti-spyware, etc. I have never had a virus before and my anti-virus software seems to be working fine. I will try CCleaner and see if it helps. Thanks.

btw, I wouldnt dare call tech support. With all the out-sourcing going on, i'd never understand what they are saying :D

yeah sorry i didn't mean to imply you don't take care of your pc. just most people i do repairs for don't so sometimes i'm guilty of assumption it's a trade hazard.

This may, or may not, be the answer:

It's a hosed 'DisplayIcon' in a registry entry in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall

The value for DisplayIcon should be a path to an icon file, plus an optional comma-followed-by-a-number. If the optional number is -1, you'll get the big blank. Just search through the key mentioned above for "DisplayIcon", checking the value of each. If you find a ",-1" in any of them, remove the comma and the -1 and you'll be OK.

thank you everyone who has tried to help me solve this problem, but it is now solved and it had nothing to do with PC negligence. First of all, I'd like to say a few things:

Ram: I wasn't mad or offended or anything, I was just trying to help find a solution.

UncleMo: I just understood that lol, the last time I called Dell, I talked to an Indian women and I couldnt understand what the heck she was saying.

anyway, you will all be very surprised to hear the name of the company that caused this problem..............EA!

I did some searching around the web and I found out that there were a few programs that conflicted with Add/Remove Programs. I looked through my installed programs and found that the 'black hole' was between 'EA online' and 'Fraps' so I knew the conflicting program either started with an E or an F. I found out that an EA program, EACom updater (a program that updates various EA games), was one of the conflicting programs. So I downloaded a program called XQDC X-Setup Pro. It allowed me to look through the programs in Add/Remove Programs, and sure enough, between 'EA online' and 'Fraps' was 'EACom updater'. I deleted the entry, and the black hole was gone!

Wow, good job man. I would never have thought of something like that.

BTW: you ever fix your video card problem?

yes I did, thanks you for asking. I've come to the conclusion that the thing causing the problem was the dual-view software I had set up for my GeForce so I could connect it to my tv. It thought my monitor was a tv too. it tried to fit both displays on my monitor which caused major problems.

it was a stupid problem. when something works, you stick with it!
