Mets81
I searched through some threads after doing a "Carlos Gomez" search. I didnt specifically find anything about a cyber face for him, but, if someone could, could they make a cyber face for Carlos Gomez? Here is a couple of pictures of him, including his AA Binghamton BMets portrait: http://www.bmets.com/images/players/gomez.jpg http://www.jccardinals.com/2004appytop/gomez-f.JPG
ronmexico
Why do we need a Carlos Gomez face? He's atleast 2 years away from the majors...and might be trade bait considering that the Mets want Milledge to be the corner of the future, and Green is still here filling space. kgbaseball
Mets fans should riot if they trade Gomez.
ronmexico
They should, unless they get someone really good, Zito type, obviously not him though cause he's a free agent. We can finally ditch Steve Trachsel, though he's served us well but, we can finally upgrade this year.
D-Unit
I don't understand the point of the second picture...it's useless. The portrait itself might be enough.
kgbaseball
You'd have to trade me 2 Zito's, a Harden and Eric Chavez for Gomez.
ronmexico
Pshh, You can't get an amazing pitcher on the market, but you can find a right fielder, via free agency or even a deal, like Shawn Green. Plus, with the Mets lineup, for the next year or 2, the need a pitcher over a bat.
kgbaseball
I agree. So you let Gomez dominate AA/AAA next year, call him up September 07, and then he's fulltime in 08. They've got other players to trade; Gomez would be a huge mistake; I don't care who they trade him for.
ronmexico
Ok, I'm just a guy who operates under the philosophy that if I can get somethhing proven for something unproven then I'll do it. Plus, he's not putting up the greatest numbers this year, considering that we already have a leadoff hitter for the next 10 years. He doesn't quite fit into the equation for the Mets, he's a tweener #2 and #7 hitter. Good contact, great speed, below average power, good arm and great fielder. Gomez practically IS Reyes, but faster with more power potential. Gomez was the youngest position player in AA this year. And look at the year he had. kgbaseball
Yeah, he doesn't even turn 21 until December. He's the top rated power hitter for the Mets according to scout.com. Once he fills out his body a little bit the power will come. There's an interesting piece about how many Latin born players develop power later on (Abreu, Soriano, Miguel Cabrera). He's rated 80 on the 20-80 scale for speed. Plus, I'll say it again; he's only 20! I can definitely see where you're coming from Ron; it's not rare to see highly rated prospects fizz out rather early. Gomez is a #3 hitter in the bigs. Let's just hope the Mets play it smart with him.
thr33niL
Ive never really seen much of Gomez but I'm curious as to what makes him so special? He is destoying in the basestealing debt but hasn't done anything eyepopping otherwise in AA. Just as a comp with a player I know a lot about... Adam Jones for the Mariners.. They are roughly the same age (Gomez is a few months younger) but Jones was destroying AAA in the PCL before the Ms gave him a shot with the big club. As a 20 year old, Jones is/was hitting .287/.345/.484/.829 with 16 homers in 380 ABs for Tacoma. Obviously, outstanding for a 20 year old to hit, and hit well in AAA but I imagine most would consider Gomez a better prospect by the way you guys are talking. If you are comping him as 'Jose Reyes... but with more potential', I'm curious how he hasn't got more hype than he has.
TheProdigy
Let's see what he does in Spring Training, before we start talking. Look at Alex Ochoa, Alex Escobar, Jason Tyner, how did they pan out ? Exactly, let him get some stuff in, even though he's one of the quickest players in our organization, I think it took him under 4 seconds to get to first base, "AND" he's a right handed hitter, he looks good. He's also a pretty decently tall guy, I think 6'2" which isn't bad at all, but let's see what he does in Spring Training. Edit: He's 6'4", it'll be mighty hard for Omar to trade this guy, it'll never happen.
ronmexico
Don't forget the speedy Jeff Duncan. :)
Mets81
The thing with Gomez is when you hear about 5 tool players, he is the real deal. His HR numbers are low, but NYSEG Stadium is not exactly a hitter's park either. He is a raw talent, yet he has pretty good plate discipline for someone his age. He has a cannon arm, hes faster than Reyes, which is incredible, And he is an out standing defensive player. Now, alot of people thought Reyes was too raw, no power, no plate discipline, he was deemed the "worste player in the Majors" by some last year. Although last year was his first full season in the Majors. Look at him now. He does EVERYTHING. And the gravvy ontop of it all is that he is going to hit 20 HRs this year. Noone though tht would happen but the people who were touting him. Gomez is a Reyes type player, but in the OF. Ill take that.
