Your turn to help me...

I agree with 'Beauty'...I'm waiting to get my iMac, after which I'll buy the software, after which I'll get a Wacom tablet, after which I'll take a nap. For now, I'm going to Sharpie 'Beauty' and scan it in at 600dpi/Greyscale - I'll do the same for 'portfolio' - this image will be the main image for my new website on the portfolio page.

I was planning on making a 'Modern Design Talk' forum...we'll see how that goes next year.

P.S. - abc006, I think it would be funnier if you avatar read 'This is not a signature' and vice versa for your siggy. :p

One of my next major projects is for one of my clients, a downtown revitilization group (site). I'm going to be doing a virtual Main Street. Basically what I'll do is go downtown and take shots of every building on Main Street then come back and do a Photoshop mock-up of each building. You'll be able to scroll down the street and view buildings, see office space available, and more.

Problem is, this is a pretty time-consuming project and I'm not going to be doing this for free. I tried to think of a way to make money off of this but I've had no luck..

I could say 'for $5, your building can appear on the site'...well what if somebody, for some reason, doesn't want to pay that $5? Now I've got a big gap where the old Rite Aid used to be.

I mean, there's a ton of ways I could do this, but it's hard to find a way to do it so that I can keep all the buildings there and still make money. The only good plan I could think of would be to display the building, but there won't be any info on it unless somebody pays their $5.

Your thoughts?

I'd say that if you've volunteered to do the job, then you've volunteered.

However, the good thing about volunteer work is that it still looks good in a portfolio, especially something like this.

The other thing I'll note (re: your blog, and I'm sorry that I'm commenting so late), is that in the big commonly bandied about list of web design things to steer clear of, designers always say not to use white text on a black background. For one, it wreaks havoc with anyone wanting to print, but more importantly, it causes eye fatigue. Not everyone, even the big designers, follow this rule though....

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks for the replies...I haven't been posting lately but I've been watching...

One last thing...the blog. I abandoned the flash website portfolio thing and got a domain name, installed WordPress, and did my blog. If I could have some feedback, that's great - but I'm more concerned about comments on there. I want to submit my site to some CSS galleries but I can't do that if I have an empty blog. Please don't say anything here - put all your jolly stuff there.

Thanks guys - I'm hoping we can do another sig contest in a few weeks.
