Any Doctors in the House?

Here's what happened to me today. I went golfing. Real nice out so I had to go one more time. Anyways, on the third hole I caught up to a group of 4 who were riding. they told me tee off and so I did. I was walking because I dont believe in carts. The guy, in his 40s, told me to stand on the back of the cart and he'll drive me to my ball. Well I thought I could trust a grown man. Next thing I know He's going way to fast and makes a turn. Well I lost my balance and tried to step off and keeping running along side it but Im 6'3" 228 lbs and carrying my clubs. Impossible. I hyper-extend my knee and hear it pop. I also jacked up my shoulder but my knee is killing me. After 9 stokes my day was done. I just got home about an hour ago and trying to decide what to do. I have all the symptoms of a sprained knee:

a popping or snapping sound in the knee at the time of injury

pain that seems to come from within the knee, especially with movement

not being able to bear weight on that leg

swelling

a feeling that you shouldn't place weight on the knee because it feels loose or unstable

Im icing it right know and going to see how it feels in the morning when I go to class. I can go to Student Health Services then.

If there's any Trainers, doctors, or students in those fields that can give me further advice I would appreciate it. Should I do anything else besides rest and ice it for now?

haha, well I figured that since many people on here played sports that maybe someone experienced the same thing. I see your point.

ER is for immediate emergencies. This isnt one. Ive been in the ER before with a slashed hand and had to wait 4 hours.

Did you also "figure" that someone would claim to know what they are talking about but would actually have no clue about it? Or that if you, or someone else, idiotically took some unknown person's advice, and there were negative results, that this site might held responsible?

The best thing to do is go to the ER even though they make you wait forever, I got stabbeb in my leg once and they had me sit there bleeding for like 3hrs.

But there's nothing like the treatment from a medical professional.

If it's really painful and you have trouble with movement, then you've probably done something to either the MCL or the ACL. If it's dark-pink/red then it's probably just a sprain - mild or severe. I'd definitely recommend a trip to a trained practitioner, though.

Rest and ice are the best you can get for now until you can see a doctor. And if the pain is too much, painkillers should help.

Edam, if the site is somehow held responsible for brutushayesosu's thread here, I'll take full responsibility. I've asked on another site which I frequent regularly for advice with my knee problems, and the guys there have always been helpful and given good advice, as well as their own experiences. And not a sign of a lawsuit anywhere.

Hope it gets better soon, brutus.

Take some anti-inflammaory medication like advil, aleve, motrin stuff like that to get the inflammation down. Don't take tyenlol or asprin as there not anti-inflammatory medications.
The medicine must say NSAID or something like that on it, if it does not, then it is not anti inflamitory. Call now to set an appointment with a knee specialist, if it heals before the date set, then cancel. BUT SET AN APPOINTMENT.

Put ice on it 2 times a day for 5-15 minutes on each knee.

How do I know this? I'm having problems with both of my knees. Dang treadmill.

Edit: If you want to sue MarkB just let me know, I work for a law firm. If you don't have a case, don't worry we'll make it up as we go along.

I'm not a doctor (yet), but I think it could be anything from a strain to a tear in your meniscus, which is a piece of cartilage that helps cushion your knee. I tend to think it's a meniscus problem based on your symptoms. The popping sound is directly associated with a meniscus injury, and actually all of your symptoms are directly associated with it; popping sound, pain when extending leg or putting weight on it, etc. I've seen this problem before in my volunteer work at a rehab center, and it's fairly common, and can be real painful. While it could be this injury, let's just hope it's a sprain!

i copied and pasted those symptoms from a website that described a sprain. I do have them all. The only ones I left out was bruising and fluid behind the knee. Im wearing a ACE brace right now and can walk but not without pain obviously. Im going to ice and brace it for tomarrow and thursday and if doesnt improve im going to see a Dr. on Friday. Thats my day off. The popping only happened within the first hour of doing it. Hasnt happened since but I guess that means nothing since ive stabilized ii better.

Maybe we can turn this into the Rehab forum if theres anyone else injured in the mvpmods community. haha

Sure does sound like a meniscus tear. The most common kind is of the medial meniscus, as opposed to the lateral.

The advantage of visiting an ER with this type of injury is you're more likely to see an Orthopedic specialist quickly. If one is available to consult in the ER, they may set you up for office followup in a short time. If you make your own appointment, it may take weeks, depending on where you live. It's likely you would need physical therapy at the least, and this would get you started in that direction quicker. And be prepared for a lot of straight leg lifts with weights on your ankles. If you're lucky, you'll get a cute therapist.

And hey, don't stand on moving golf carts.
