bernie williams is a new york icon, not a mlb icon, i updated berkman and howard to the list from the suggestions, i thought they were fitting, the rest are good for now

biggio is no where near an icon either...

If you look at their overall body of work, then yeah, biggio and bernie are both icons.

this isn't fan favorites, this is MLB icons

Nowhere in that did I say they where fan favorites, they have put together stellar careers and are HOF bound. Just because they may not put up the "stats" now doesn't make them any less of an icon.

'cuz biggio's certainly not getting into the hall after his 3000 hit, leading 600 doubles, 15 years with the same teammate, and esp. not because Bill James once said he wa btter than Griffey Jr. in Jrs. prime-- of course he's not an icon

*rolls eyes* oh well, can't get win 'em all right?

anywho, does the list i compiled earlier sound reasonable enough?

i gave you guys a list, does it have that "just right"-ness about it? maybe it's missing howard

anywho, i agree with fred, esp. cuz in madden icons can switch teams and nwe ones can form. so maybe we add in the "rookies" for 08? does that sound good?

So wait...future HOF'er Biggio's not an icon, but...Papelbon is?

this is my definition of the mlb icon

mlb icon- a player that is an established player AND is also a household name...

i am not saying biggio is not a great player, i just dont consider him a household name throughout america

ok, GUIDLINES:

all future HoFamers

top 20 players not yet HoF

top 3 players in each category (HRs, avg, SB, win, ERA, K) if not already in list

optional: trademark players from some ogrinazations (bernie yanks, huff d-rays, tim salmon angels, BIGGIO, the most underrated player in baseball a bit of years ago, etc.)

does that sound sufficient?

no offence but no, i am picking players that are faces of the franchise and are icons...no specific guidelines

Nationals

Alfonso Soiano

Cubs

Derek Lee

Reds

Ken Griffey Junior (but he needs to have the injury icon next to him as well)

Adam Dunn

Astros

Clemens

Biggio

Oswalt -- maybe

Brewers

none

maybe Ben Sheets, but other than that no

Pirates

Jason Bay

Cardinals

Pujols

Carpenter

DBacks

none

Rockies

none

Dodgers

Greg Maddux

Eric Gagne (see jr's sidenote)

Padres

Mike Piazza

Jake Peavy -- maybe

Giants

Barry Bonds

Rangers

Mark Texieria

Mariners

Ichiro

A's

Frank Thomas

Barry Zito

Angels

Vladimir Guerro

Twins

Blue Jays

Vernon Wells

DRays

none

Yankees

Derek Jeter

Alex Rodriguez

Randy Johnson

Mariano Rivera

Red Sox

Manny Ramierez

David Ortiz

Curt Schilling

Orioles

Miguel Tejada

thats a grand total of 40ish.

no howard b/c he's only had 1 full season in the bigs

no utley b/c he's had a career year, and no one outside philly had heard of him until his hit streak. any questions? I know he already has a list, but this is just a list of who I thought would be a good list. Any obvious one's I'm leavin out?

I disagree with almost all of your list. lol. WAY too many people that are IN NO WAY an icon - at all. For instance: ADAM DUNN? Maybe the strikeout icon. pffft.

The quote I left above are only the players I AGREE'D with from your list.

Obviously I'm not saying my list is right and yours is wrong - but I think people still don't get the idea of an icon - not just "this teams couple of decent players."

i could go with that, i just hadn't heard anything from him recently and had forgotten he was there, but his number have been decent although his power is declining.

None.

Los Angeles (Angels)

Vladimir Guerrero

None.

(Honorable Mention: Johan Santana, Joe Mauer)

New York (Yankees)

Randy Johnson

Mariano Rivera

Alex Rodriguez

Derek Jeter

Oakland

Frank Thomas

(Honorable Mention: Eric Chavez)

Seattle

Ichiro Suzuki

Tampa Bay

Carl Crawford

(Honorable Mention: Rocco Baldelli)

Texas

(Honorable Mention: Jason Schmidt, Ray Durham, Moises Alou)

Washington

None.

(Honorable Mention: Alfonso Soriano)

--------------

...and that's a total of 22 "icons" in all major league baseball. To me that seems about right. How many "icons" of a sport should there really be???

Oh, and to be clear "Honorable Mention," in my list, means they are kind of "on the bubble" in my mind. This means either I think it's too early in their careers to really decide if they're really going to become a true "icon" or various other things that mean they might be great players, but are they truly iconic? ... sort of like the difference between a phenomenal player that is loved... and a sure-thing hall-of-famer.

it depends where you live

That response right there makes this whole list nothing but hog-wash. In other words, this is who you think are icons, not actually who are icons.
