tebjr
Well at least someone enjoyed it - the '86 Mets were the first team I ever followed...and the first team I saw in person. My heart broke a little tonight... :violin: I like the '86 Mets to. I really liked all of Davey Johnson's Mets teams. But the '87 Cards were the first team I really got into. sfgiantsflgators
hehehe...Mookie... the first game i played in this pool with the '86 mets, i remembered the game that i went and saw in '86 - my first mlb game (cards/mets at busch). so i called my mom to get some insight on it... she said that i (at 5 years old) kept chanting "mookie" and the cardinals fans around me kept getting me riled up :D

sfgiantsflgators
Pool 2, Round 2 Berra, Ford Lead Yanks Into Round 3 Elston Howard puts the Yankees on the board in the second inning with a two run home run to left. Whitey Ford makes Sal Bando look foolish in the fourth inning. Despite the urgings of kgbaseball, Bando couldn't pull it together, going hitless in the contest. Mickey Mantle scores on a single by Yogi Berra in the fourth inning. Unlike Sal Bando, Yogi Berra had a good day, going 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Gene Tenace scored the first Oakland run of the game, coming home when pinch-hitter Claudell Washington reached on a fielder's choice in the eighth inning. After Sal Bando grounded out to start the ninth, and Reggie Jackson followed with a fly out, Joe Rudi did his best anti-Bando impression, hitting a solo home run to make the score 4-2. Yankee reliever Art Ditmar would get the next batter, Gene Tenace, to fly out to end the game. Scoring B2: Howard two run HR B4: Berra single scores Mantle B7: Mantle walks, Richardson scores T8: Washington reaches on a fielder's choice, Epstein out at second, Tenace scores T9: Rudi solo HR W - Ford L - Hunter S - Ditmar Players of the Game: Yogi Berra 3-4, 2B, RBI Whitey Ford 7.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K Sal Bando 0-4, K, 0 RBI For Boxscore, click here

kgbaseball
Even though most of these teams were way before my time, it's still fun to see the progress. Only 3 more games until the 82 Brewers flaunt their greatness. On a side note, is there any way you could copy the 2nd pool to page 1? It'd make it easier to keep up since you have to scroll through a few pages now to see the updated pool. Thanks.

sfgiantsflgators
Pool 2, Round 2 Pirates Use Three Run Fifth To Prevent All-Yankee Quarterfinal Matchup Roberto Clemente got things going in the fifth inning for the Pirates with a one out single up the middle. After advancing to second on a single by Smoky Burgess, Clemente came home for the first run of the game on a double by Don Hoak. The very next batter, Bill Mazeroski, singled home Burgess and Hoak (pictured) to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead on four straight one-out hits in the fifth inning. Pirates hurler Bob Friend was stellar today, striking out eight batters and allowing just three hits before an arm injury forced him out after 4.2 innings. Fittingly, the last pitch he threw today put Red Rolfe down swinging. Scoring T5: Hoak double scores Clemente; Mazeroski single scores Burgess, Hoak W - Cheney L - Russo S - Face Game Notes: Bob Friend left the game with an arm injury after striking out Red Rolfe in the fifth inning. sfgiantsflgators
Pool 2, Round 2 Reds Pound Out 12 Hits, But Yankees More Efficient In 4-2 Victory Joe Morgan opened the day's scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Graig Nettles answers Morgan with a solo home run of his own, tying the game 1-1 in the first. Mickey Rivers puts the Yankees on top for good in the third inning with a two run home run to right center. Yankees pitcher Ron Guidry demonstrated his speed on both his fastball - and in his legs, stealing two bases on the day. Roy White added an insurance run for the Yankees in the seventh inning, driving in Jim Spencer with a pinch-hit single to right, just past a diving Joe Morgan. With runners on second and third and two outs, Cesar Geronimo lined what was surely going to be the game-tying hit in the eighth inning. Yankee third baseman Graig Nettles had other intentions though, snagging the ball out of mid-air and saving the game for the Bombers. Scoring T1: Morgan solo HR B1: Nettles solo HR B3: Rivers two run HR T6: Concepcion double scores Bench B7: White single scores Spencer W - Guidry L - Seaver S - Gossage Game Notes: Chris Chambliss left the game in the bottom of the second after attempting to break up a double play. In the third inning, the Yankees opened up for four runs, knocking Don Sutton out of the game. After Sutton struck out Babe Ruth for the first out of the inning, reliever Doc Medich was called. The first batter he faced, Lou Gehrig (pictured), welcomed him with a solo home run to the upper deck in right field. After the Brewers scored two run in the sixth inning, they continued to put the pressure on with a two run seventh. Their second run of the seventh came courtesy of a single by Ben Oglivie (pictured), scoring Robin Yount. The run pulled the Brewers to within two, 6-4. The big bat of the day for the Yankees came not from Ruth or Gehrig, but from Earle Combs. Combs was 4-5 on the day with two homeruns and four RBI. Here, Combs touches home after hitting a solo home run in the seventh, his second big fly of the day. Joe Cronin trots around the bases after a solo home run in the fourth inning, extending Boston's lead to 2-0. Minnesota took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth with a three run frame. First, Don Mincher (left) lined a double into left center, scoring Jimmie Hall and Harmon Killebrew to tie the game. Two batters later, Earl Battey hit a double of his own, hugging the left field line and scoring Mincher (right) for what would prove to be the game-deciding run. Ozzie Smith slides safely into third with an RBI triple in the sixth inning, tying the game 1-1. In his only at bat of the game, having come in during a double switch in the top of the eighth inning, Pedro Guerrero puts the Dodgers on top with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth. Vince Coleman beats out the throw from Dodger third baseman Pedro Guerrero in the ninth to load the bases with two out, preserving the Cardinals rally. Ozzie Smith (left) was responsible for driving in the tying run for the Cardinals in the ninth inning, with a single that plated John Morris, who had started the rally with a pinch-hit single of his own. The next batter, Willie McGee, hit a two run single to center, scoring Lance Johnson and Vince Coleman (right) for a 4-2 lead. Jack Clark would add one more run before the rally ended, scoring Ozzie Smith with a single to left.
