Pool 4, Round 1

Pollet Crafty, Musial Powerful In 5-1 Cardinal Victory

62met46carly1.png

mus3ce4.png

Stan Musial had a characteristically great game, going 2-3 with a triple and a home run. Here, in the

third inning, is Musial's triple to left center. He would later score the first Cardinal run of the game on

a sacrifice fly by Enos Slaughter.

mushrgn9.png

Stan Musial would be back in the thick of things in the fifth inning, following up a home run by Harry

Walker with one of his own for a 3-0 St. Louis lead.

polns2.png

Cardinals starter Howie Pollet pitched well today, going 7+ strong innings, allowing one run on seven

hits while striking out nine. His lone run allowed would come in the eighth inning on a RBI double by

Marv Throneberry. He would be pulled in favor of Ken Burkhart with runners on second and third, and

nobody out.

chayd3.pngmoooq1.png

The first batter Ken Burkhart would face was Mets leadoff hitter Elio Chacon (left). Burkhart fooled

Chacon with a slider away, and then induced a weak fly out by Felix Mantilla for a quick two outs. After

intentionally walking Richie Ashburn to load the bases, Frank Thomas flew out to left fielder Terry

Moore (right) for the final out of the inning.

kurbn5.png

With the score now 3-1 in the Cardinals favor, St. Louis went to work in the bottom of the eighth to

get some insurance for Ken Burkhart in the ninth. It wouldn't take long. The first hitter, Enos Slaughter,

singled up the middle to bring Whitey Kurowski (pictured) and his 0-fer day (with 2 K's) to the plate.

Kurowski made up for all that with one swing, blasting a towering shot into the left field stands to give

the Cardinals a 5-1 lead.

Scoring

B3: Slaughter sacrifice fly scores Musial

B5: Walker solo HR; Musial solo HR

T8: Throneberry double scores Neal

B8: Kurowski two run HR

W - Pollet L - Craig S - Burkhart

Player of the Game:

Stan Musial 2-3, 3B, HR, RBI, 2 R, BB

Howie Pollet 7+ IP, 7 H, 1 R, 9 K

Pool 4, Round 1

Furillo's Walkoff Erases Late Comeback By Reds

61red49bumkf3.png

robqh5.png

Jackie Robinson turned in a huge game for the Dodgers today, going 3-4 with two home runs and five

RBI.

colwi2.png

In the second inning, Gordy Coleman hit a solo home run for Cincinnati who, at the time, looked to be

just a minor nuisance for the Dodgers.

frete7.png

The Reds started their charge in the sixth inning, scoring four runs in the frame. Three of those runs

came on a blast from Gene Freese, bringing the Reds within three, 8-5.

col2gb7.png

Gordy Coleman drove in his second run of the game in the eighth inning, scoring Elio Chacon on a

single to tie the game 8-8. The Reds would score one more time in the inning to take their first, and

only, lead of the game.

furyx6.png

As the Dodgers looked to be on the verge of a monumental collapse, Carl Furillo changed it all with a

mighty swing in the bottom of the ninth, sending the Dodgers into Round 2 with a 10-9 victory.

Scoring

B1: Snider single scores Reese; Robinson three run HR

T2: Coleman solo HR

B2: Jorgensen walks, Campanella scores; Robinson single scores Newcombe

B5: Robinson solo HR; Roe reaches on a fielding error by the pitcher, Hermanski scores

T8: Pinson solo HR; Freese single scores Robinson; Coleman single scores Chacon; Bell grounds out

to second, Freese scores

mayag8.png

John Mayberry caps off a five-run first inning for the Royals with a three run shot into the fountains in

right-center field.

lonzf4.png

Boston starter Jim Lonborg never collected an out in today's game, exiting after allowing five runs on

five hits in just 18 pitches.

halcr7.png

The Royals added two more runs in the third inning on back-to-back home runs by John Mayberry (his

second of the game) and Hal McRae (pictured).

yazzw6.pngscons7.png

The Red Sox tried their best to get back in the game in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on a pair of

two run home runs by Carl Yastrzemski (left) and George Scott (right). That would be all Boston could

muster today though as they fell 9-4.

Thats the way. Jump all over the starter early.

Always good to have your leadoff man on base all the time.

I need to steal your template for recaps.

Yeah, it was a pretty solid effort by the boys in baby blue. Although, I didn't think Leonard would ever get out of the fourth inning.

As for the template, knock yourself out. It's a nice, easy way to throw up a recap without it taking an hour. Treat it well.

How do you work the rotations in this tourney?(sorry if youve addressed this before)

and thanks for the template

I treat each game like a one-game playoff. So there's no rotations, per se - whoever the best pitcher was (all based on my opinion developed from stats, pitcher history, etc.) for each particular franchise that season, he gets the ball until they're eliminated.

So, for instance, Leonard will get the start until KC loses.

Pool 4, Round 1

Senators Stymied By Sawx, 2-0

62rsox24senrm1.png

yasrzf1.png

Gary Geiger got Boston on the board in the second inning with a single to left, scoring Carl Yastrzemski

from third base.

gosvk5.png

Goose Goslin was thrown out in the fourth inning when he attempted to stretch a single into a double.

yashrwl7.png

Carl Yastrzemski scored both Boston runs today. He wouldn't need help with the second one, driving

himself home with a solo shot in the seventh inning.

ruelrg0.pngblupoyv1.png

Washington skipper Bucky Harris did not have a good day. (Left) In the second inning, Harris had a

calm discussion with first base umpire Greg Gibson after Muddy Ruel was called out on a pick off at first

base. (Right) Harris wouldn't stay so calm in the eighth inning, storming out of the dugout after Ossie

Bluege was called out on another pickoff at first. Harris was quickly tossed, but made sure to get his

money's worth in a heated debate with Gibson.

mcncf1.png

The game ended with Earl McNeely grounding into a 4-6-3 double play, giving Boston a 2-0 victory

and a Round 2 birth.

Sanders, Williams Lead DBacks To 13-5 Victory

61bra01dbhl3.png

thokw0.png

Braves left fielder Frank Thomas put in his best effort for Milwaukee, going 3-4 with two home runs

and two RBI.

sanjj4.png

Frank Thomas' effort would be matched two-fold however, as Reggie Sanders (pictured) and Matt

Williams each had two home runs for the Diamondbacks, going 5-5 and 4-4 respectively.

san2bvj8.png

In a perfect example of how things went for Milwaukee today, third base umpire Paul Nauert ruled

this grounder down the third baseline fair, giving Reggie Sanders a two-run double in the fourth inning

and Arizona a 6-2 lead.

wilmh9.png

Matt Williams rounds the bases in the eighth inning after his second home run of the day gave Arizona

a 13-5 lead.

Plank Does It All As A's Beat Giants 7-2

12as12giabs4.png

bar1yo2.pngbar2ei6.png

Today, Jack Barry defined the cliche "...he who ends the inning with a great play, contributes off-

ensively in the following frame," as Barry ended the bottom of the first with a diving stop on a liner by

Red Murray (left); and hit a solo shot in the top of the second to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead (right).

plapdi9.png

How did Eddie Plank defeat the Giants today? Let us count the ways: First, he did it from the mound,

going seven strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eleven.

pla1bhk1.pngplahroe7.png

Then, Eddie Plank delivered from the plate. (Left) First, Plank singled home Amos Strunk in the fifth inn-

ing, giving the Athletics a 2-0 lead. (Right) Then, in the seventh, Plank lined a solo home run over the

short porch in right for the fifth Athletics run of the game.

meypolb0.png

Finally, for good measure, Eddie Plank picked Chief Meyer off of first base in the bottom of the seventh.

devgr3.png

inning. But it was too little, too late as New York fell 7-2.

first Orioles run of the game in the second inning.

robit7.pngbowyp2.png

Peters injures himself while pitching to the next hitter, Boog Powell, Dave DeBusschere is brought in.

DeBusschere strikes out Powell, but gives up a home run to the next hitter, Sam Bowens, to give Bal-

timore a 3-0 lead.

There's a disappointing lack of '93 Jays in here.

If it holds you over better, the '92 Jays made an appearance in Pool 3. Page one has a link to the beginning of Pool 3.

I think the fact that the '92 team is here - and that other than a few players, the similarity between the '92 and '93 squad - led the Total Classics team in a different direction.

Thanks for checking in though - hope you still enjoy it!
