sfgiantsflgators
Pool 2, Round 1 Seaver Takes No-Hitter Into Eighth, Reds Bullpen Holds Off Braves In 4-3 Victory Joe Morgan opens the scoring for the Reds in the first inning with a two run home run. This was a night to forget for Warren Spahn. The Reds hit him early and often, jumping out to a three run lead before the third inning. In the fourth, the bad times continued for Spahn as his counterpart Tom Seaver came up with the bases loaded and one out. Seaver lined a shot off Spahn's leg, buying enough time to score Dan Driessen and ensuring that the only out the Braves could get was at first base. It prove to be the deciding run. Tom Seaver (left) was unhittable through 7.1 innings, striking out 13 batters in the process. His no-hitter would come to an end in the eighth inning when Joe Adcock (right) connected for a solo home run. Seaver's only other flaw in the game was a leadoff walk in the first inning to Red Schoendienst. Hank Aaron came to the plate as the tying run with two outs in the ninth inning, but Reds closer Pedro Borbon induced a foul fly that left fielder George Foster was able to track down for the last out of the game. Scoring T1: Morgan two run HR T2: Concepcion solo HR T4: Seaver grounds out to the pitcher, scores Driessen B8: Adcock solo HR; Logan two run HR W - Seaver L - Spahn S - Borbon Players of the Game: Joe Morgan 2-4, HR, 2 RBI Dave Concepcion 2-4, 2B, HR, RBI Tom Seaver 7.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 13 K For Boxscore, click here

sfgiantsflgators
Pool 2, Round 1 Sutton Outshines Ruth In 4-1 Brewers Win Don Sutton does his best Babe Ruth impression, taking the Bambino deep to the tune of three runs in the fifth inning. Ben Oglivie adds another run to Milwaukee's tally with a solo shot in the seventh inning. Boston's best chance came in the eighth inning, when Babe Ruth came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded as the go-ahead run. On a 1-1 count, Ruth would pop out to third, ending the threat. Boston manager Ed Barrow can only watch as his team falls to the Brewers, 4-1. Scoring T5: Sutton three run HR T7: Oglivie solo HR B8: Strunk walks, Schang scores W - Sutton L - Ruth S - Fingers Game Notes: Boston first baseman Stuffy McInnis left the game in the top of the eighth with a dislocated finger. sfgiantsflgators
That's the end of Round 1 in Pool 2. Only one really big upset in that round, the #24 '41 Red Sox over the #9 '54 Giants. There are five Yankee teams in Round 2, setting up two possible Yankee/Yankee matchups in Round 3. We'll see what happens.

sfgiantsflgators
Aww... what a tough loss for the Yankees. Lookin good yet again! Yeah, I thought the Yanks would win that one. But that Twins team has some players on it - wouldn't surprise me if they made a real run at it.

sfgiantsflgators
Pool 2, Round 2 Three Run Fifth Enough For Dodgers In Shutout Of Tigers The power of Alfredo Griffin - a solo shot in the fifth - gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the fifth. Franklin Stubbs followed up Griffin's shot with a two run shot of his own, pushing the Tigers into a 3-0 hole. Nothing went the Tigers way today.
