Game 58: Tigers (28-29) @ Dodgers (32-25)

Rogers Does It All In LA's Third Straight Victory

la58pl4.jpg

Left: Southpaw Kenny Rogers dominated the Detroit Tigers; Right: Vinny Castilla goes yard in the sixth inning.

The Dodgers continued to push for the lead in the NL West by beating the Tigers 3-2. They have now won seven of their last ten games, including a current three-game winning streak. Kenny Rogers started the game for LA and he would remain in it for more than seven innings. The southpaw was in total control of the Tigers, allowing only two runs for the visiting team while striking out four batters. With a solid performance, Rogers earned his fifth win of the year.

In the bottom of the third inning, Barry Bonds hit a single which allowed Kenny Lofton to score LA's first run of the game. One inning later, Rogers stepped up to the plate with Craig Biggio on first base. He hit a double off Detroit's Edwin Jackson into deep left field, giving Biggio plenty of time to come around and score. "Sure, I'll never be as good a hitter as the guys batting in front of me, but I can hit, too", Rogers smiled after the game. Vinny Castilla's solo shot in the sixth finally gave the home team a three-run lead.

The Tigers scored twice in the seventh inning, first on Rod Barajas' RBI single and then on Mark Bellhorn's sacrifice fly. Trevor Hoffman entered the game in the ninth, going for his 17th save of the year. LA's closer surrendered a single to Ramon Hernandez to start the frame, but he retired the next two batters after that. Pinch hitter Erubiel Durazo drew a walk, putting the tying run into scoring position at second base. However, Hoffman escaped the jam by striking out Carl Crawford to end the game.

Kiss The Cook! Detroit's Starter Destroys LA

la59ns8.jpg

Left: Carl Crawford was 3-for-5 with two RBIs on the night; Right: Detroit's Aaron Cook struck out eight batters.

The Tigers avoided the sweep by winning the final game of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium, 7-2. Detroit's starting pitcher Aaron Cook had absolutely no problems with the Dodgers, allowing just two runs on three hits for the home team. Cook pitched more than seven innings in which he recorded a total of eight strikeouts. "He was flawless today", LA's shortstop Omar Vizquel said after the game. "There's not much you can do when a pitcher throws stuff like that."

Detroit opened the scoring in the second inning on Rod Barajas' RBI single that scored Ramon Hernandez from second base. Mark Bellhorn followed with an RBI double, giving the visiting team an early 2-0 lead. The Tigers added two more runs in the third on John Mabry's single down the middle. Bobby Abreu's sacrifice fly brought home another run in the fifth, and Carl Crawford, who was in the lineup for the injured Hideki Matsui, hit a two-run triple in the sixth, making it 7-0 for the Tigers.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Craig Biggio finally recorded the first hit for the Dodgers, thus breaking up Cook's no-hitter. LA went on to score one run on Kenny Lofton's RBI single and another one in seventh on a fielding error by the Tigers. Despite these two runs, Detroit's victory was totally out of question. While LA's starter Kevin Brown had to accept his second loss of the year, an impressive Cook earned his third win of 2005.

Game 60: Twins (24-35) @ Dodgers (33-26)

Red-hot Reynolds Reigns In Twins Killing

la60pp7.jpg

Left: Starter Shane Reynolds shut down the opposing side; Right: 3B Vinny Castilla draws a bases-loaded walk.

Starting pitcher Shane Reynolds had a superb outing against the Twins in LA's 5-2 win at Dodger Stadium. Reynolds shut down the opposing offense over six innings, allowing just six hits for Minnesota. "To be honest, I didn't really expect to do that well against one of the top lineups in all of baseball", the shy starter commented after the game. "Lately, I wasn't happy with my performances, but today I've been feeling a lot better."

The Dodgers took an early lead in the opening inning as Minnesota's starter Clint Nageotte walked in a run. "We were aware that he [Nageotte] is wild sometimes, so all we had to do was to take his pitches", center fielder Kenny Lofton said. LA added another run in the second on Omar Vizquel's RBI single. In the fourth, Lofton doubled in Craig Biggio from second base and Larry Walker made it 4-0 with an RBI single.

The Twins were put on the board by Chase Utley in the eighth inning. Minnesota's infielder hit an RBI single which scored Hee Seop Choi from second base, but Biggio went deep in the bottom of the inning to preserve LA's four-run lead. In the ninth, pinch hitter Carl Everett also homered off closer Trevor Hoffman. However, the home team managed to hold on to its lead, much to the delight of GM Jim Tracy. "The Colorado Rockies are struggling at the moment, so this is our chance to take the lead in the division", Tracy stated at the press conference.

The Rocket Fuels LA With His Arm And His Bat

la61ef2.jpg

Left: Vinny Castilla is safe at home plate; Right: Ace Roger Clemens shut down the Twins and drove in two runs.

Roger Clemens was a one-man show in LA's 9-0 shellacking of the Twins. The Rocket pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits for Minnesota while striking out five batters. Additionally, Clemens proved that he also knows how to swing the bat as he drove in two runs for his team. "It would have been one of my best games ever, if it hadn't been for that final incident", Clemens stated afterwards, referring to Rondell White's at-bat in the bottom of the seventh inning. Minnesota's outfielder hit a line drive that hit Clemens in the face and broke his nose.

Clemens is expected to remain injured for five days, but the Dodgers have announced it is very likely that he will be available for his next scheduled start. "I hope he gets better soon, so he won't miss anything", center fielder Kenny Lofton said. Lofton was 3-for-4 against the Twins with two RBIs on the night. Beside Clemens and Lofton, three other Dodgers - Barry Bonds, Larry Walker, and Greg Myers - recorded RBIs for the home team.

LA scored five runs in the sixth inning, taking a comfortable eight-run lead. In the end, the Dodgers had scored nine runs on 15 hits, while completely shutting down the opposing offense. Due to Clemens' injury, relief pitcher Buddy Groom came to the mound in the seventh. Groom pitched two innings in which Minnesota managed to squeeze out only two hits. "I'm very proud of my team and tomorrow we'll celebrate the sweep", a confident GM Jim Tracy promised after the game.

Home, Sweep Home! Dodgers Finish Off Twins

la62sq3.jpg

Left: SP Greg Maddux pitched eight strong innings; Right: CF Johnny Damon started the game with a home run.

After a mediocre start into the new season, Greg Maddux is becoming more and more important for the Dodgers. LA's starter led his team to a sweep over Minnesota, thus recording his third win of the year. "During my first month here, I couldn't get anything going, but now it seems as if the tide has turned", Maddux commented on his latest appearances. Against the Twins, he pitched eight strong innings in which he allowed only three runs. Two of these came on solo shots by Johnny Damon and Chase Utley, and the third run was driven in by Lance Berkman on an RBI single.

The Dodgers were quickly trailing by two runs after as many innings, but a three-run sixth inning put them back on track. Third baseman Vinny Castilla tied the game with a bases-loaded two-run single off Minnesota's John Lackey that scored Larry Walker and Barry Bonds. Craig Biggio then delivered a two-out double which allowed Greg Myers to trot home from third base. Catcher Benito Santiago added another run in the seventh, giving LA a two-run lead.

Berkman's RBI single in the eighth inning kept the Twins' hopes alive, but LA's closer Trevor Hoffman only needed seven pitches to retire the side in the ninth. Hoffman now has 18 saves on the year, which ties him (together with Houston's Eddie Guardado) for second place in the National League. Due to the 4-3 win, the Dodgers are now just half a game behind NL West-leading Colorado. "We're doing great at the moment, but we need to focus on the difficult road trip that's ahead of us", GM Jim Tracy said.

Game 63: Dodgers (36-26) @ Royals (33-29)

Royal Rookie Upton Baffles LA's Veterans

la63xd0.jpg

Left: C. Biggio takes off as the ball gets away from KC's catcher; Right: B.J. Upton hit a triple and a solo homer.

When LA's Kenny Rogers took the mound at Kauffman Stadium, he only had eyes for KC's power hitters Albert Pujols, Eric Chavez, and Jeff Bagwell. Rogers was able to keep these big bats quiet, but he totally forgot about shortstop B.J. Upton. The rookie went 2-for-3 on the night, including a home run and two RBIs. "I knew he was a good hitter against lefties", Rogers, who went all eight innings for LA, stated after the game. "But I didn't know he was that good..."

The Dodgers started well into the game by taking an early two-run lead in the top of the third inning. Barry Bonds drove in both runs for the visiting team, recording his 50th RBI of the year. In the bottom of the inning, Upton tripled with center fielder Torii Hunter on first base. In the very next at-bat, Rich Thompson singled in Upton to tie the game. After that, the Royals became more and more dominating as the game progressed.

KC's starting pitcher Kyle Lohse improved from inning to inning, allowing only two more hits over four innings. In the seventh, Upton took Rogers deep for his fifth long ball of the season, thus giving the Royals a 3-2 lead. Lohse was replaced by relief pitcher Brendan Donnelly in the eighth, and closer B.J. Ryan earned his 14th save in the ninth. "First Upton and then Ryan - that was just too much B.J. for us", GM Jim Tracy explained LA's first defeat after three straight wins.

Dodgers Outslug Royals At Kauffman Stadium

la64my5.jpg

Left: Larry Walker drove in two with a homer; Right: The fireworks go off as KC's Mark Kotsay rounds the bases.

Starting pitcher Kevin Brown did not have his best outing for the Dodgers, but he was still able to get the job done against KC. Brown pitched 6 2/3 innings and struck out five opposing batters. Despite giving up six runs on twelve hits, the 40-year-old managed to get the win, his fifth of the season. "I couldn't have done it without the support of my fellow teammates", Brown stated after the game. "If they hadn't brought their big bats to the ballpark, it would've been a devastating night for me."

LA took the lead early in the game, when Royals starter Adam Miller walked Vinny Castilla in the first inning with the bases loaded. Greg Myers then added another run by hitting a single down the middle that drove in Julio Franco from third. KC was put on the board in the third by right fielder Mark Kotsay. His solo blast off Brown cut the visiting team's lead to a single run, but LA responded with a five-run fifth. Castilla hit a three-run home run that inning, his seventh long ball of the year.

KC promptly answered with a multi-run inning of its own. Third baseman Eric Chavez capped a four-run fifth with another three-run blast. After Albert Pujols' RBI double in the seventh, the Royals were once again trailing by just one run. Only Larry Walker's two-run homer in the ninth provided LA's closer Trevor Hoffman with enough room to retire the side and seal the deal on his team's 9-6 win over the Royals. "Coming into the game with a three-run lead is every closer's dream", Hoffman said after earning his 19th save.

Third-Inning Explosion Lifts KC Past Dodgers

la65kn5.jpg

Left: 1B Albert Pujols points to the sky after going deep; Right: CF Torii Hunter had a two-run triple against LA.

LA's starting pitcher Shane Reynolds could not hold down KC's offense as the Royals remained victorious in the rubber match at Kauffman Stadium, 8-4. Reynolds surrendered all eight runs, resulting in his fourth loss of the season. "It was a terrible game for me", a frustrated hurler said at the press conference. "No matter what I tried, it just didn't work." The Dodgers had a good start into the game, taking the lead in the first inning on Barry Bonds' RBI single that scored Omar Vizquel from second base.

The home team, though, started the game even better. Albert Pujols blasted a two-run shot into the right field stands for his 23rd long ball of the year. The Dodgers regained the lead in the third inning, when Larry Walker took KC's starter Josh Karp deep for another two-run homer. However, the Royals erupted in the bottom of the inning, in which they scored a total of six runs on seven hits. Torii Hunter added two runs with a triple and B.J. Upton capped the inning with another RBI single.

After three innings, Reynolds was replaced by long relief pitcher Steve Sparks. The knuckleball specialist dominated the Royals for the remainder of the game, allowing just three hits over five innings. "He has done pretty well lately, so maybe it's time to move him back into the rotation", GM Jim Tracy said after being asked about Sparks' future. Vizquel drove in another run for LA in the seventh, but the visiting team could not produce more than that. Julio Franco stepped up to the plate in the ninth with the bases loaded, but KC's closer B.J. Ryan got him to fly out to end the game.

Game 66: Dodgers (37-28) @ White Sox (40-26)

Goodnight Sandman! Dodgers Rally Against Rivera

la66fo9.jpg

Left: O. Vizquel hits the second ninth-inning home run off M. Rivera; Right: A. Dunn slides into third with a triple.

When Chicago's closer Mariano Rivera took the mound in the ninth inning against the Dodgers, the mood in LA's dugout was far from festive. The visiting team was trailing the White Sox by two runs and Rivera had not had a single blown save on the year. Fred McGriff started the inning with a single, giving the Dodgers some hope. The next batter, second baseman Craig Biggio, blasted a 2-1 fastball into the stands for a two-run home run. It was the first long ball Rivera had given up in 2005.

With the game being tied and still no outs, the momentum of the game was now on LA's side. Shortstop Omar Vizquel connected for another home run off a shaky Rivera to give the Dodgers the lead for the first time since the opening inning. "I couldn't believe my eyes", LA's starter Roger Clemens said after the game. "Two home runs off Mo Rivera in the final inning - that's like a dream come true!" Clemens had given up five runs over six innings, leaving the mound with a four-run deficit.

Prior to the ninth inning, LA struggled to get its game going. The White Sox scored three runs on two long balls by Adam Dunn and John Flaherty. In the fifth, Dunn hit an RBI triple and Russell Branyan drove him in, giving the home team a comfortable 5-1 lead. The Dodgers scored twice in the seventh on Larry Walker's single, setting the stage for the outstanding rally in the ninth. Closer Trevor Hoffman recorded his 20th save of the season, despite giving up a two-out double to pinch hitter So Taguchi.

White Sox Pitching Trio One-Hits Dodgers

la67sa4.jpg

Left: Catcher John Flaherty homered twice against LA; Right: Gustavo Chacin struck out nine opposing batters.

One day after an amazing ninth-inning rally against the White Sox, the Dodgers suffered their worst defeat of the season as they only managed to get a single hit at U.S. Cellular Field. Chicago's starting pitcher Gustavo Chacin pitched more than seven no-hit innings, but had to leave the game with a minor injury. In the ninth, LA's Craig Biggio recorded his team's only hit of the day by singling off closer Mariano Rivera. "Although it didn't change the outcome of the game, I'm very glad I got that hit", Biggio later admitted.

The White Sox opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when catcher John Flaherty took LA's starter Greg Maddux deep for a two-run shot. Three innings later, Chicago added to the lead when Adam Dunn and Russell Branyan each drove in a run. In the seventh, Flaherty homered for the second time of the day - his third long ball in two games against LA - for the final score of 5-1. "Of course I'm not happy with my team's performance", LA's manager Jim Tracy stated at the press conference. "But today was one of those days when nothing goes right."

The Dodgers' only run of the game came with the help of the White Sox. A bad throw to first base by Branyan led to runners on second and third in the sixth inning. Biggio's sacrifice fly to deep center allowed Benito Santiago to score easily. "All in all, it was a horrible day for us, but we need to forget about it and move on", outfielder Eric Young declared. After the third and final game in Chicago, the Dodgers will head west again for a four-game series against the Padres at Petco Park.

Big Unit Pounded By Powerful Dodgers

la68sh1.jpg

Left: Kenny Rogers dominated on the mound; Right: Larry Walker takes Randy Johnson deep in the third inning.

LA's starting pitcher Kenny Rogers prevailed against Chicago's Randy Johnson in a duel of the southpaws. Rogers tossed his first complete game of the year in his team's undisputed 8-2 victory over the White Sox. He recorded five strikeouts and only allowed two runs on seven hits. Rogers now posts an ERA of 3.39, the same number as the Big Unit, who surrendered a total of seven runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings against the Dodgers.

Right fielder Larry Walker started the slugfest in the third inning with a two-run shot. The Dodgers then exploded in the fourth when they scored five runs on four home runs. Catcher Benito Santiago and newly acquired outfielder B.J. Surhoff went back-to-back, and Craig Biggio smacked his eighth long ball of the year to end Johnson's afternoon. Walker capped the big inning with his second homer of the game off relief pitcher Dennis Tankersley.

The White Sox were put on the board in the fifth inning on Grady Sizemore's solo shot. In the ninth, Daryle Ward connected for the seventh home run of the day, but the crowd at U.S. Cellular Field did not feel much like celebrating as the home team's defeat had already been accepted. "Winning against one of the top teams in the American League, by beating one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, makes me very proud of my players", Dodgers' GM Jim Tracy explained.

Dodgers Keep On Rolling At The West Coast

la69sp3.jpg

Left: The Dodgers celebrate their triumph over the Padres; Right: O. Vizquel watches his homer leave the yard.

In the first duel of a four-game series at Petco Park, the Dodgers claimed victory over the Friars thanks to a solid team effort. Kevin Brown did not allow much for the home team, except a game-tying three-run home run by leadoff hitter Placido Polanco in the fifth inning. Apart from that, Brown was in total control of SD, striking out seven batters over as many innings. "I had a perfect start by striking out the first two Padres", Brown later said. "That gave me a lot of confidence and it showed."

LA's offense was fully awake when the first pitch of the game was thrown. Shortstop Omar Vizquel connected for a solo shot off SD's starter Jake Westbrook to give the visiting team the lead in the opening inning. Barry Bonds' RBI singles in the third and the fifth added to the lead, but Polanco's long ball tied the game in the bottom of the inning. However, the Dodgers did not seem to be impressed at all as they kept on scoring run after run.

In the sixth inning, Craig Biggio doubled in Vinny Castilla from third base for the go-ahead run. Julio Franco drove in another run in the seventh, and LA went on to score four more runs in the eighth for the final score of 9-3. "Today we had six batters with RBI hits", GM Jim Tracy stated at the press conference. "We're a team with so many good and experienced hitters that it's very hard to keep us down." While Brown's record improved to 6-3, Westbrook's horrible season continued with his seventh loss of the year.

How can you trade Delmon Young, one of the top-prospects for BJ Surhoff?

Or was it a move by age ?! ;)

Yes, I traded Young for Surhoff because of his age. After all, this dynasty is about veteran players, not prospects. I'm aware of Young's talent, but I don't need him as I will only play one season with this team.

Steve Spark-le-s Against Frustrated Friars

la70mn1.jpg

Left: Steve Sparks had another great outing for LA; Right: Kenny Lofton's three-run shot put the Dodgers ahead.

Barry Bonds & Co. earned their third straight win with a 9-5 triumph over the Padres. At first, it seemed as if LA's nightmare, Padres' starter Tim Wakefield, would continue his great streak against the Dodgers. His vicious knuckleball fooled the opposing batters as Wakefield recorded eight strikeouts over six innings on the mound. Only when he was replaced by relief pitcher Josh Hall, the Dodgers were finally able to turn the game around.

Trailing by one run after six innings, LA took the lead in the seventh by scoring three times against Hall. Greg Myers started the inning with a single and pitcher Steve Sparks reached first base on an error by SD's defense. Kenny Lofton took advantage of the situation by hitting a three-run blast, thus giving his team the lead, 6-4. Moises Alou's RBI single in the bottom of the inning brought the Padres closer to the Dodgers, but LA's Myers went deep in the eighth to restore his team's two-run lead.

In the ninth, the Dodgers scored two more runs against Keiichi Yabu, again with some help from SD's sloppy fielding. LA has now scored 26 runs in the last three games. "Our offense is really clicking at the moment", GM Jim Tracy stated proudly. Sparks, who had replaced starter Shane Reynolds in the fifth, earned his second win of the year by holding the Friars to a single run for the remainder of the game. "He has proven that he deserves another chance in the rotation", Tracy commented on Sparks. "And next week, he'll get that chance."

Strong Finish Secures Fourth Straight Win For LA

la71dg2.jpg

Left: The Rocket was on target against the Padres; Right: Justin Morneau follows through on his solo home run.

LA's ace Roger Clemens did not show his best stuff in his team's 6-4 victory over SD, but, he was rewarded with his eighth win of the year, nonetheless. The Rocket pitched six solid innings, giving up just three runs on eight hits while striking out five batters. Two of his three runs allowed came on solo shots by Justin Morneau and Jermaine Dye. When Clemens left the field after six innings, the Dodgers were trailing by one run, but his teammates helped him out by scoring twice in the seventh.

First, Larry Walker stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and only one out. He hit a ball deep enough into center field to allow Craig Biggio to score from third base on the sacrifice fly. Then, Barry Bonds came to the plate, trying to drive in the go-ahead run for the Dodgers. LA's slugger hit his second single of the day which scored Kenny Lofton from second base. Finally, the Dodgers added two more runs in the ninth, thus giving closer Trevor Hoffman a three-run lead to work with.

Hoffman got Alex Gonzalez and pinch hitter Bernie Williams to fly out, but he could not hold down SD's leadoff hitter Placido Polanco. The second baseman took LA's closer deep for his tenth home run of 2005. "That homer was the consequence of my arrogance", an angry Hoffman told reporters after the game. "Mentally, I was already in the clubhouse celebrating." However, Hoffman got the home team's next batter, Dye, to ground out to end the game, thus recording his 21st save.

Padres Rally Against Maddux To Avoid Sweep

la72xm1.jpg

Left: J. Dye makes a spectacular game-ending catch; Right: A. Melhuse passes LA's F. McGriff after going yard.

With a 4-6 loss against the Padres at Petco Park, the Dodgers fell short of their first four-game sweep of the year. LA's starter Greg Maddux had quite some problems on the mound as he gave up all six runs on eleven hits over 6 2/3 innings. "I just couldn't find my groove", the Mad Dog explained after the game. "Although I managed to get a couple of strikeouts, I couldn't help but feel a bit awkward out there." The latest defeat was Maddux's fourth of the year and his second in a row.

The Padres' Jermaine Dye opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly that allowed Placido Polanco to score from third base. LA quickly answered by taking the lead on Craig Biggio's two-run shot, but Polanco's RBI single tied the game in the bottom of the second. The Dodgers regained the lead in the third when Omar Vizquel doubled in Kenny Lofton from second. Greg Myers' solo blast made it 4-2 for the visiting team in the fifth. It was also the catcher's 100th career home run.

Everything looked good for the Dodgers as they entered the seventh inning with a two-run lead, but the Padres were just getting starting. Pinch hitter Brady Clark opened the frame with a home run off Maddux, and Adam Melhuse capped a four-run rally with a two-out blast that drove in three for the Friars. Despite having runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth, the Dodgers could not score anymore, thus suffering their first loss after four straight wins.
