UncleMo
Hey, my step dad is one of those trekkie types  . He likes Sci Fi books. :lurk: I need some recommendations as to what types of books to get him. I want to stay away from those fantasy types like Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, and stay away from the obvious like Star Wars :starwars: . Any amazing recommendations? :reading: I would really appreciate it.
DJEagles
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I am not a sci-fi buff, but that book was great.

AstroEric
I loved Hitchhiker's. But it's comedy sci-fi. Do you know what specific books he likes? Is he only a Trekkie? My favorite sci-fi books are the Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, Roadmarks by Roger Zelazny and Way Station by Clifford D. Simak. But I like those because they break the boundaries of sci-fi. I also mostly dug Ringworld by Larry Niven. If you can give some more specific titles, I can maybe point you in the right direction. --Eric
abc006
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I am not a sci-fi buff, but that book was great.i agree 100%. One of my favorite books ever. see my location, and if you've ever read hitchhiker's, you'll get it. the only problem is, if he really likes sci-fi, I'm sure he's already read them. UncleMo
I can not at this time, but I do know he read books like, you know, Oddysey 2001, books by that guy that started Scientology. Sheez, I think my step dads a nerd. He could possibly be the only brutha trekkie in the world.
RaptorQuiz
Greg Bear writes excellent sci fi. "Eon" is a good book by him. The entire "Ender's" series by Orson Scott Card is good. Those books are: Ender's Game is the first and the best. Others in the series are: Speaker for the Dead Xenocide Children of the Mind and in a parallel series: Ender's Shadow Shadow of the Hegemon Shadow Puppets Shadow of the Giant

They are a great read and also make you think a bit too not just fluff sci-fi.

Definately entertaining on a "sci-fi" level, and yet they also offer some value on a much more "thoughtful" level.
AstroEric
The other problem is that he's probably read Ender's Game too. That's definitely part of the sci-fi "canon."

RaptorQuiz
The other problem is that he's probably read Ender's Game too. That's definitely part of the sci-fi "canon." well that's not bad... then he could get him a set of one of the two "series." The following 3 books in the "Ender" series, or the 4 book series that makes up the parralel "Ender's Shadow (Bean)" series. ...or both. or neither! lol. UncleMo
Thank you all. Anyone know off hand which few are the most recent? The better the book, the more recent the book, the higher the chance of him never had the opportunity to read it. He hasn't read them in a while.
