If one is capable, he/she can memorize the individual patterns that are possible (just look at any side, and choose a color, then look for which alignment those colors are in)... based on that pre-set condition, there is some kind of formula that tells you how many times to repeat the series of turns. I used to be interested in solving Rubik's cubes...though it took me like 1.5 minutes to solve one (I used the really slow layer-by-layer method)...but now, it has just gotten boring...
