18 months ago I bought a 2.8Ghz laptop, today I go shopping and most of the high end laptops are only 1.6Ghz

WTF

it is a bus speed issue?

will programs run as fast on a newer laptop as they do on my current laptop.

Bus speed is one reason.. Efficiency, size and architecture of the core, cache, etc all affects speed. Higher Ghz also impact how much electricity it needs from the battery.

It's similar to the situation between AMD64 (efficiency) VS P4 (processor speed).

I just installed a 2.16ghz, dual core, intel t7400. I havent heard of any processors that are being sold that are that high, but I know the highest mobile processor that I can find is a 2.33ghz dual core processor, with 1ghz bus speed. That model is the t7600, and I'm not sure if you are looking for AMD or Intel for processor.

I would doubt that they'd run at the same speed, but that might work based on whether your current cpu is comaptible with your motherboard, and as compared to the one your buying. What is your current processor?

As for explaining how laptop CPU speeds work

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/microprocessor.htm

this seems to be a goodl link.
