Giants Bullpen Implodes in Five-Run Eighth, Rockies Win 9-4

511endxc3.jpg

1matfa7.jpg

A four-run fifth inning by Colorado got rolling when Kazuo Matsui shot a double past first baseman

Mark Sweeney, putting runners at second and third.

2lowls0.jpg3matbd2.jpg

After Matsui's double, Lowry (left) walked Troy Tulowitzki intentionally to face pitcher Aaron Cook with

the bases loaded and one out. Lowry would walk Cook to force in the first run of the game - and then

walked the next batter, Cory Sullivan to score Matsui (right) for a 2-0 Rockies lead. Colorado would add

two more runs for a 4-0 advantage.

4swemk6.jpg

The Giants started to threaten in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with two outs and

Fred Lewis at the plate; but Mark Sweeney got caught napping at second and was picked off to end

the inning.

5vizzc9.jpg6felkc5.jpg

The Giants tied the game 4-4 in the top of the eighth, scoring four runs with two outs. (Left) The first

run crossed the plate when Omar Vizquel singled home Randy Winn. (Right) After a Todd Linden double

scored Vizquel, Pedro Feliz homered to deep left for the third and fourth runs of the inning.

7bakqu6.jpg

The Rockies set the fireworks off again in the bottom of the eighth, scoring five runs to take a 9-4 lead.

Jeff Baker started the onslaught with a two-run home run.

8matoj5.jpg9wilxk7.jpg

The biggest play of the Rockies' five-run eighth inning came when Kazuo Matsui shot a grounder back

up the middle that deflected off Brian Wilson's glove (left). Wilson recovered in time to get Matsui for

what would have been the last out of the inning, but threw the ball into left field (right), allowing Brad

Hawpe to score from first base. The next batter, Troy Tulowitzki (not pictured), would add a two-run

home run to cap off the five-run inning.

Scoring

B5: Cook walks, Lopez scores; Sullivan walks, Matsui scores; Spilborghs grounds into a fielder's choice,

Tulowitzki scores; Helton double scores Cook

T8: Vizquel single scores Winn; Linden double scores Vizquel; Feliz two run HR

B8: Baker two run HR; Matsui reaches on an error by the pitcher, Hawpe scores; Tulowitzki two run HR

W – Hirsh (2-0) L – Kline (2-2)

Morris Battles but Rockies Salvage Series Split 3-2

513endzw3.jpg

1moroz3.jpg2tavnh5.jpg

Matt Morris (left) kept the Giants in the game today, surrendering three runs on nine hits in six innings,

striking out seven in the outing. Willy Taveras (right) accounted for two of those seven punch outs.

3lopsr5.jpg4winlv8.jpg

Javy Lopez slides into second with a double in the bottom of the second inning (left). Lopez would

score three batters later on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Randy Winn (right) by Troy Tulowitzki.

5alfzz8.jpg

In what would prove to be a costly mistake, Brad Hawpe would score on a two out single by Willy Ta-

veras in the second inning. Center fielder Randy Winn would one-hop the throw to catcher Eliezer Al-

fonzo in time to get Hawpe; but Alfonzo fumbled the delivery, allowing Hawpe to slide in safely. No er-

ror was called on the play.

6buchsb5.jpg

Taylor Buchholz helped his own cause in the fourth inning, singling in Kazuo Matsui for what would

prove to be the winning run.

7linkf5.jpg

Todd Linden got the Giants within one with a two-run, two-out single in the top of the fifth, scoring

Fred Lewis and Randy Winn. The Giants would fall short in the end however, settling for a four-game

series split with Colorado in a 3-2 loss.

Scoring

B5: Tulowitzki sacrifice fly scores Lopez; Taveras single scores Hawpe

B8: Buchholz single scores Matsui

T8: Linden single scores Lewis, Winn

W – Buchholz (2-2) L – Morris (1-4) S - Affeldt (6)

i'm anxious to see how EME does with the crawford boxes. he's been hitting the crap out of the ball, but can't catch a break to save his life. hopefully he can get one or two over that short porch and get on a roll.

DID YOU KNOW?

One year ago today, the San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros faced off at Minute Maid Park in a three-game series.

The Giants swept the series, winning game one 10-1, game two 14-3, and game three 10-1 to outscore the Astros 34-5.

The Giants are 14-4 at Minute Maid Park since 2002.

EME Breaks Out as Giants Pound Astros 10-1

515endgc7.jpg

1winzi4.jpg

Randy Winn drove in the first two runs of the contest in the second inning with a triple to left center.

2felrd9.jpg

Morgan Ensberg lines into a double play in the bottom of the second inning. Third baseman Pedro Feliz

caught the ball right at the third-base bag, allowing him to touch the base to double off Adam Everett

to end the inning.

4felcl4.jpg

The Giants hit six home runs in tonight's game, the first coming from Pedro Feliz in the top of the fifth

inning.

5emezl0.jpg

Eddy Martinez-Esteve has hit the ball well since making his big-league debut, but hasn't had much to

show for it - until tonight. EME went 4-5 in the contest, hitting two home runs while driving in two.

6zitoxu8.jpg7berkbh7.jpg

(Left) Pedro Astacio hit Barry Zito with a pitch in the top of the fifth inning. (Right) In what appeared to

be obvious retaliation, Zito hit Lance Berkman in the bottom of the sixth. Both sides were then warned.

Scoring

T2: Winn triple scores EME, Lewis

T3: Frandsen sacrifice fly scores Molina

T5: Feliz solo HR; EME solo HR; Frandsen solo HR

T6: Linden solo HR; Molina two run HR; EME solo HR

B6: Loretta solo HR

W – Zito (4-2) L – Backe (0-5)

They went on to sweep that series, outscoring Houston 34-5...with the win, the Giants improved to 15-4 at Minute Maid Park since 2002.

Hey man, I like your "Did you know" section. That was a good idea. A chance for you to maybe add in some historic facts to your dynasty.

In that case I'll have to try to keep it going. I originally just did it because I remembered the pounding the Giants put on Houston last year at Minute Maid.

I'll try to make it a series thing - a fact or two about the opposing team before each series starts.

Here's your chance to get another bad pitcher going!

...and hopefully a chance for EME to get closer to that 312 RBI mark.

Yeah that would be a good thing to do. BTW, you crushed Rodriguez right?

How is Bonds doing on his quest for 756?

http://sfgiantsflgators.tripod.com//Players/Bonds_Barry.html

He's on the DL right now with a sprained MCL - he had turned it on before the injury and sits at 15 home runs right now, putting him six away from tying Hank.
