Handleing trades with CPU teams

How does everybody handle trading with other CPU teams. I'm mainly talking in terms of trades initiated by you. I have a habit of starting a dynasty with the Pirates and shortly after the season starts I've ended up trading a significant portion of the team. I usually end up with a significantly improved roster after the trades, even though I have fair trades ON. Although most of these trades aren't terribly lopsided or anything, it's not that hard to manipulate the CPU teams enough that you end up with a stacked roster after a few trades. How do you guys keep yourself from taking advantage, do you limit the number of trades you can make or anything?

I just can't help feeling like I'm cheating when I do this.

I always have a select few players that I always want on my team. Those guys include Jeremy Hermida, Andre Ethier, and other various hardthrowing pitchers. Since teams in real life would never trade these guys, it feels a little like cheating. Plus, the realism factor is decreased after trading away most of the roster.

Yeah, in my Yankees owner mode, I signed Ordonez, R. Hernandez, and Roberto Alomar, and traded for Eddie Guardado, Sandy Alomar Jr., I also unlock Ashburn, and Newhousen, and my team is now stacked.

I try to take as real an approach as possible. I think about how my team makes trades, types of players they tend to get, etc. For instance, the Phillies rarely sign huge ticket free agents, much less trade for them. If they do they are usually character guys (hence why I like the Phillies). I make small trades, bring in a few lower teir prospects for the future, bring back some former players, develop my real life farm system, basically keep it as real as possible... with the exception of reaquiring Scott Rolen:)

I just started a new dynasty. The only adjustment I have only made is signing Clemens. I have in the past started dynasties and went trade wild. Having 5 great SP, 9 amazing batters, and 3 really good RP. I didnt have a bench or any minor league prospects. This became tiresome not having a pennant races and not even one close game. Though after aquiring Clemens I tried to get rid of Igawa because he was unhappy for another RP as I really only have one good reliever in Vizcaino. Im happy I couldnt find any takers for Igawa, as he just came in after Pettite got rocked by the Rangers and threw 4 perfect innings before giving the reigns to Rivera. You just have to basically tell yourself, Im not going to stack my roster and not do it. Because if you really want a stacked roster its not hard to do.

i trade old players for minor league prospects so i can put younger players in the field

Until this offseason, seeing this sentence next to a Yankees logo would have made me fall on the ground laughing.

Now we have Sheffield, and the Yanks have Sanchez and two other top pitching prospects.

I think this has been asked, and in the negative, but has anyone figured out a way to carry a dynasty through the year and keep up with the roster updates? I would really enjoy going through the year day by day with the actual rosters.

I always try to trade for a player that would be traded in real life as well if the offer is right. Players that might be blocked and really wouldn't have a chance of making the majors with their former team. That keeps it fair and realistic.

Yeah. I refrained from signing Clemens and Delgado in my owner mode.

Eh... Yeah I just updated the rosters to UR 8.1 from EA's last official roster and was like :wtf: has happened to my yankees. So I made the signing without playing a few games to realize now the game is much funner without the team being stacked. Though Clemens is doing great with a ERA of ~1.8 and 26 K's and 1 CG where only gave up one HR in the 9th, he's 0-3 due to lack of offensive support. I know sad but true atleast for this dynasty.

I usually play 3 to 4 year dynasties. In the first year I usually just pickup a few free agents to develop in the minor or a rollplayer or two for my major league bench. As for trades, in the first year I only trade minor leaguers around, mainly to pickup guys I need to fill positions I'm short on. Like that 4th outfielder. After the 1st year, because of the way the cpu teams handle free agency, resigning, etc, I trade for younger good players that make sense on my team. Currently I'm playing the Mets, so after the 1st season, I'll be going after good young pitchers :)

I attempt to do that with my Pirates, though it usually only lasts about 15-20 games. The Pirates make very few trades and if I kept it comparable to real life I'd have to get taken to the cleaners in virtually every trade, though I like the acquisition of Laroche.

That sounds pretty reasonable, I guess. Although I could always see myself rationalizing Ryan Howard being blocked or something, LOL. I just don't want to limit myself to some arbitrary numbers of trades.

As the Phils I tried to trade Jon Lieber but the only offer I got for him was Ross Gload. At that time I thought I could swing a deal initiated by me but boy was I wrong! So I am stuck with him for the year.

It depends. For me, it's not so much about my position players (Cincinnati Reds) but my pitching staff, starting and bullpen.

I trade for guys that are blocked and/or that are horrible and try to turn them around. Some successfull (Billy Traber, posted a 12-4 2.04 era, split starter and relief year for me) and some failures (Kirk Saarlos 3-18 4.20 era. Both stats were simmed out.)

I also try to upgrade at weaker positions (First base I created Joey Votto and stuck him in triple A while I used a combination of Ryan Garko and Scott Hatteberg for a year)

However most if not all of my best moves came from free agency..

I've landed Brett Myers, Francisco Liriano, Gonzalez and League in my last off season. Which is weird cause I really know teams wouldn't drop these players. Myers was second place for the Cy Young in that season as well.

I had Mike Gonzalez + Kyle Davies offered for Homer Bailey, than the next day for Billy Traber... I just wind up waiting till the offseason and signing players..while calling up my own.

Can anyone tell me how to stop the CPU from making so many ridiculous trades and cuts involving obvious real-life keepers?

Turn off the CPU initiated trades option the the menu

That works, but they still make ridiculous call-ups and demotions, such as proven veterans down to AA, while low minor-leaguers start in the big leagues.,

Yeah that sucks but there's nothing we can do about it. It's all in the unmoddable MVP05 game engine :(
