SHEFFIELD DOES IT AGAIN TO ORIOLES

BALTIMORE - In the make-up game, Gary Sheffield was not in the mood to make nice as he hit a home run in the ninth inning to send the Tigers to a 2-0 lead.

Lance Reid picked up a hit for the Orioles, but that was about as much offense as they could muster as Kenny Rogers and Joel Zumaya baffled the team from Baltimore.

ORIOLES HIT THREE HOME RUNS TO PACE WIN

BALTIMORE - Barry Bonds had a homerless streak and he was sick of it. Four games without a home run, Bonds set out to get one.

"I can't stand going so long without a home run," Bonds said. "Hitting a home run is an addiction I need to keep going like putting needles in my butt."

Bonds waited until the bottom of the seventh to regain his power stroke, as he homered to extend the already sizable Orioles lead.

Jim Thome crushed his eigth of the year for the Birds, and Aubrey Huff took an inside pitch that he seemingly was sawed-off on, out of the park.

"I don't know how I got that one out," Huff said. "I just used my muscle."

Kris Benson picked up his first win of the year, going 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits while striking out two.

BONDS, ORIOLES FIND POWER STROKE, DEFEAT JAYS 7-4

BALTIMORE - Barry Bonds had his addiction cured twice in two days. Bonds hit his 5th of the year and two other Orioles hit home runs as Baltimore downed Toronto.

Frank Thomas started the power surge in the third when he plated Bonds and Thome with a three run dong to left.

"I am so close to 500 I can taste it," Thomas said. "I am really excited."

Bonds then connected in the next inning on a two-run shot to right. Jim Thome led off the fifth inning, and he powered one off of the warehouse in beyond the right field wall.

"I didn't know I hit it that well," Thome said. "I guess I crushed it."

Daniel Cabrera went six innings, allowing three runs, while striking out six.

THOME, THOMAS LAY LUMBER ON A'S

BALTIMORE - Frank Thomas and Jim Thome teamed up to give Oakland a "big hurting". Thomas and Thome each hit two home runs as the Orioles beat the A's 7-5.

Thomas' first home run came after Thome singled to lead off the second inning. The Orioles (14-7) went on to score four runs that inning, including Thomas' 2 run HR. Craig Biggio plated Lance Reid, and Ceasar Izturis plated Melvin Mora.

Erik Bedard pitched well enough for his third win of the year, as he went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs, while striking out 5.

"The ball just is responding so well off the bat right now," Thomas said. "The team is playing great ball. Let's get some more wins."

THOMAS INCHES CLOSER TO 500 AS ORIOLES WIN 5-1

CLEVELAND - Frank Thomas is laying a "Big Hurt" onto major league teams these days. Thomas connected on two more home runs, as he led Baltimore to a 5-1 win.

Thomas homered in the fifth and the seventh. In the seventh inning, it was part of a back-to-back with Jim Thome.

"I want 500 real bad," Thomas said. "I still have power. The league just needs to understand that."

Thome's home run was his team leading 13th.

Barry Bonds connected in the first inning to put the Orioles ahead, and Jaret Wright (3-0) in a comfortable enough lead to cruise to the win.

LATE POWER SURGE PROPELS O'S TO WIN, THOMAS GETS ANOTHER

CLEVELAND - Down 4 to 3 going into the ninth inning, the Orioles needed some magic. Back-to-back-to-back home runs was the rabbit out of the hat.

Frank Thomas, Ramon Hernandez, and Lance Reid each delivered moon shots to put the Orioles ahead.

"It's nice to break out of a mini-slump," Reid said. "That 3,000 is coming, but I just don't know when."

Baltimore got an unexpected power supply out of Ceasar Izturis. He hit two home runs for the Orioles, which in turn brought his RBI total up to 14.

ORIOLES IMPROVE TO 18-8, THOMAS HITS NUMBER 499

CLEVELAND - Behind the strong bat of Frank Thomas and the arm of Erik Bedard, the Orioles cruised to a 9-0 win.

Bedard (4-2) went the complete game, allowing only three hits while striking out five.

"When you get the kind of run support that I did today," Bedard said. "It's hard not to try to pitch the best you can."

Thomas crushed career home run number 499 off of a C.C. Sabathia fastball that clocked in at 98 MPH. One more for Thomas, as that makes 12 on the year for the slugger.

"I almost got 500 tonight," Thomas said. "I just barely missed the second one, died right before the wall."

The Orioles now travel to Detroit, where Thomas hopes to finally reach the milestone.

THOMAS STUCK AT 499, BUT ORIOLES WIN 5-3

BALTIMORE - Pat Jacobsen pitched well for the Orioles today, and the bullpen was able to hold on to the lead to perserve the win. Jacobsen went seven innings, striking out two, and allowing two runs.

Frank Thomas, who has been stuck at 499 career home runs for 3 games was unable to add one to reach 500. He went 0 for 4 on the day.

"I'm just trying to swing too hard," Thomas said. "I just need to relax and try to make contact."

Chris Ray came in to close out the game. Lance Reid hit a home run for the Orioles, his sixth of the year.

ORIOLES DOWN INDIANS 10-4, BONDS AND THOME HOMER

BALTIMORE - The Orioles always seem to give Kris Benson run support. Baltimore punished Jake Westbrook and the Cleveland Indians for a 10-4 win.

Lance Reid and Melvin Mora collected RBIs in the second inning. In the third, Barry Bonds launched his 9th home run of the year, putting him within 15 of breaking Hank Aaron's record.

"I just put a good swing on it," Bonds said. "That homerless streak was getting to me."

Frank Thomas went 2 for 4, but none of his hits were the elusive 500th home run, but he did score two runs.

"It will come," Thomas said. "I am putting the bat on ball, but it's just not going."

MANNY BREAK OUT OF SLUMP, POWERS O'S TO WIN

BALTIMORE - Manny Ramirez couldn't go this long is a slump. He had to do something about it. Ramirez homered and drove in two runs to lead the Orioles to a 3-0 win over the Indians.

"It feels nice to go three for three," Ramirez said. "I didn't hit a home run in forever, so hopefully I can get back on that bike."

Barry Bonds also laid into one, putting it off the warehouse for his 10th home run of the year. Bonds now needs 14 home runs to pass Hank Aaron on the all-time list.

"I am regaining my power stroke," Bonds said. "It was off of a lefty too, so that helps the confidence."

Daniel Cabrera (3-2) went 6 1/3 innings, striking out five, while scattering 8 hits.

ORIOLES AND MANNY DODGE A BULLET

BALTIMORE - Manny Ramirez made a crucial mistake at the wrong time. Ramirez let a fly ball drop to the ground in the sixth inning, which allowed the Devil Rays to take the lead.

"I don't know what happened there," Ramirez said. "I just lost track of it in the lights."

Ramirez made up for it in the eigth, when he took Dan Mecili's fastball into the stands for his 11th home run of the season.

Barry Bonds and Jim Thome each had home runs for the Orioles.

THE BIG HURT GETS THE BIG 500 IN ORIOLES WIN

BALTIMORE - The pitch looked as big as a cantelope to Frank Thomas as it was coming in. A hanging curveball by Seth McClung was sent 398 feet over the right field wall as Thomas finally hit his 500th home run.

"This is a great feeling," Thomas said. "I can't believe I finally accomplished this. To get this and the win is the best."

Pat Jacobsen (3-1) finally was able to earn a win for Baltimore (24-11), as he pitched a superb game. Jacobsen went 6 2/3 innings, scattering nine hits, allowing three runs to score, but struck out a season high of seven.

"I am glad I got the run support to be able to get the win today," Jacobsen said. "Congratulations to Frank. He deserves it."

Manny Ramirez continued his hot hitting as he went 2 for 4 on the day with another home run, while driving in two.

So are you gonna keep the Big Hurt even though he reached his milestone?

Frank Thomas might be traded, but for who, I wonder. If A-Rod has a solid amount of HRs and I think I can reach 500 with him, I will get him on the team. I am not sure. Bonds and Thome are getting close. Thome is a monster for me.
