Kccitystar
As I am heading into being 20 years old, recently I've begun to experience a stabbing pain in my jaw. My first reaction was that maybe I dislocated it overnight, however that isn't possible b/c I don't sleep with my mouth open or partially open. However upon further Googling and WebMD'ing I found out that I may have an impacted wisdom tooth. What does this mean? This means that my wisdom teeth are trying to come out through my gums, however in doing so it is causing conflict with the existing teeth that are already there in my mouth, and my jaw can't support 2 new sets of teeth. Basically I have a tooth that's coming out but it's coming out in a way that it's grinding towards one of my molars, and that's not a good sign, especially when the tooth hits a nerve. So far I've been taking painkillers, specifically Vicodin, for the past couple days and although it helps, the worst case scenario would be for me to develop an addiction to painkillers while I wait for my health insurance card and info to be sent through snail mail. Why haven't I gone to the dentist? Well, for starters, when I turned 19, my health insurance policy had changed and the people didn't want to transfer me over from the Child health support to the Adult one. As a result, I had to do the manual thing and fill out forms etc. As of today I'm still waiting for the health insurance card and info. On top of that, if I were to go now, it would be about $200 or so to extract ONE tooth, and the prices go up especially when my wisdom teeth are impacted. So anyway, I woke up this morning, on Opening Day no less, with a sharp stabbing pain in my jaw. It wasn't one of those "dude my jaw hurts" moments like it's been for the past couple of weeks, I'm talking about serious pain, like pain that hurts so much you start to tear and you don't even realize it. I tried rubbing Orajel, which is like a temporary solution to relieve toothaches and jaw pain, and it didn't work. The pain is so intense, over the counter pain relievers in recommended doses don't even work. The pain has subsided a bit now, but as it stands, the latest I can go see a dentist is on Wednesday, and I'm out of painkillers. Man this week is going to suck Any advice from my fellow MVPMod-ites? Kccitystar
I have to get mine pulled out over this summer.... :'( My cousin had his wisdom teeth removed earlier this year and he told me that it wasn't so bad, because once the anesthesia kicks in, the only think you'll feel is just pressure in your mouth from the dentist removing your tooth, and not even that hurts, but he couldn't eat solid foods for like a week. I'm kind of a fast healer so that shouldn't be a problem for me. I've been googling and reading up on some stories and basically most of them say that you won't be able to eat solid foods for about a week and that basically you cannot, cannot forget to take your meds. If not, you're in for a world of pain. Maybe extracting the wisdom teeth isn't such a bad thing after all, since they serve no purpose.
SwinginSoriano
Most people have to get theirs pulled out. Even if it's just one or all of them. Luckily, all my wisdom teeth just came in like normal.
nanner
I had the same problem in December. It was much worse than even how you described it though and here's why. I'm 23 by the way. My Wisdom teeth have been coming in for a long time before December, and I never did anything about it since I can't just take off work to worry about it.. Gotta pay the bills. One day I was at work, workin' away, and I started feeling some sort of bruising on the side of my mouth.. I had no idea what it was since it wasn't the same kind of pain as just my wisdom teeth coming in like before. What I realized is, there was an absess building up because the Wisdom tooth has been grinding up against my back molar creating a serious infection.. an absess is a very serious thing if not treated and not getting your wisdom teeth out when you should can cause this.. If not treated long enough, an absess (which is basically poison) can enter your bloodstream and give you a heart attack. It's killed people before. After reading up on it, I pretty much was sold. I had to leave my job in January and have a serious operation (in the hospital) to remove all my wisdom teeth and this infection which infected 2 other molars in the back.. One was actually attached to my jaw bone or something.. 3 weeks of recovery too.. And it's not like I'm unhealthy either. I recover very fast and work out every other day. Bottom Line man. You don't get these things taken care of, regardless of anything, it can get much worse than you even can think of. I didn't even mention the insane, "bring you to your freaking knees" pain I felt everyday for literally a month. Wisdom teeth can create a serious infection if not treated. You think you're in pain now, it can get worse. Get it looked at ASAP bro. BTW, I feel your pain man. I can get kicked in the face, punched by Mike Tyson, doesn't matter.. No pain is equal to what your own teeth can bring you.. It can bring a grown man to his knees.
nanner
BTW, Percocets RULE!! They become very addictive though.. You start feeling pain in the morning when you wake up and you go for the bottle.. You feel the total dazed out feeling it gives you and next thing you know you're doing everything you can to keep as high as possible so you don't feel any pain and instead feel hilarious lol. It's basically like being drunk off wine.. Numbing, yet fun. Defenetly the best part of getting your wisdom teeth out.. The only good part I guess. That and you don't have to worry about the pain ever again afterwards.
Totte
Basically I have a tooth that's coming out but it's coming out in a way that it's grinding towards one of my molars, and that's not a good sign, especially when the tooth hits a nerve. Good luck man! My denstist reported last month that I have the same problem and that it needs to be fixed within one year or it'll cause permanent damage to my other teeth :toothless: . We don't have the same system as you guys so I'm currently saving up the 200$ to go... Stay tough man and remember what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger! medric822
My one sister had real bad problems with hers, so bad that it scrwed up her mouth so bad that she's going to have reconstructive surgery. She's a very nice person who life has played a cruel trick on. Mine started coming in when I was 10, and were in by 12, and they didn't cause me to lose any sleep. If you worried about cost, remember this, the novacane (probably mispelled) is free. My mom found that out the hard once when she was young and poor, lol. She laughs about it now, but she didn't then.

DJEagles
Screw that, I'm going to Canada. Free healthcare FTW! Hate to tell you, but pulling your Wisdom Teeth isn't covered by our "Free HealthCare". It is considered "Cosmetic". Cost approx. $200 to be "put under", and can cost upwards of $1200 - $2000 to have them all pulled. yes, if you have Blue Cross insurance, they will cover up to 80%, but it isn't free for us, so don't get excited. You can't just walk into a dentist office in Canada, and expect them to pull them for you. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Sean O
Well, you're probably not going to like this story, but I'm probably an extreme case. All four of my wisdom teeth were impacted, coming out around 45 degrees from vertical. To extract them, I had general anaesthesia, and they actually had to break each tooth into several parts. Once I woke up from general (which sucks, mind you), I had to sit up completely straight for half the day following, a terrible feeling when you just want to go to sleep. This was to prevent blood from flowing down into my stomach and aid the clotting. Following the surgery, because I'm very, very prone to cankers, and there was a lot of swelling around the extraction sites, I could barely eat for a full week. The most important thing is to keep your mouth clean, because I've heard a dry socket, where there's an infection in one or all of the wounds, is about the most painful experience you can go through. Good luck.
redsox
I went for a general check-up when I was visiting India, and the doctors took some x-rays. The x-rays should that I have two wisdom teeth that are growing sideways but my vacation time was limited that I didn't have a chance to pull them out. So far, I don't have any pain, but I am sure its going to hurt like hell and I am wondering now as to why I didn't take them out in India. The medical cost here in the U.S. is astronomical (even with an insurance). I guess sooner or later I am going to be experiencing the same pain that you are right now. Here's to hoping that your insurance information gets processed sooner and you are able to get those tiny devils out of your mouth.

JP_Frost
Luckily I don't have my wisdom teeth, in fact I miss one regular molar. They took x-rays and they aren't there.
medric822
Anyone see the movie "Canadian Bacon" when John Candy is pulled over by Dan Ackroid, and was told that the fine was $10,000 Canadian, or $10 American. Just a funny thought that popped into my head.
ronmexico
I know what your feeling, I thought when my wisdom teeth were coming in that I was having an aneurysm, because I had a sharp pain in the side of my head, with no explination. I kept panicking and then I just realized, hey, maybe it's the teeth. Three days later the pain subsided.
mvp23
Hey KC, why do you worry about the cost? You do know that tooth ferry will cover the cost when she brings all that cash at night. :)
thr33niL
Been there! I had to go to an oral surgeon to get my bottom two wisdom teeth pulled. One of them was impacted and the way it was explained to me, it had to be cut into 3 pieces and removed one piece at a time through the tiny hole that it was punching through. For both teeth it cost ~ $1300. I have dental insurance so that covered most of it. I had to be put out for the procedure since it was pretty nasty I hear. Recovery was horrible for me. I was layed up for like 5 days. They gave me Oxycodone for pain but I had some sort of reaction to it and it made me sick as hell. I feel for yah man. Impacted wisdom teeth suck ***. How is a necessary wisdom tooth/teeth extraction considered cosmetic when its pain inflicting, detrimental to oral heath, etc? It doesn't seem to make much sense. Then again, no one has ever accused insurance companies of making sense.
ronmexico
Speaking of teethular problems, I just chipped a tooth, which I'm suspecting I did based on the shoddy filling job my dentist put in there about a year ago. I'm gonna leave her now, all she does bad work and puts me in pain :pistols:
sdoyle7798
I just had my wisdom teeth pulled back in February. I had one abcessed (sp?) so they took out that one, the abcess and the other two that I had growing in. In the oral surgeon's office, knocked the F out. But afterwords I literally had no pain...at all...ever. Didn't use any of the Vicoden I was given. Still have it as a matter of fact. Bled like a stuck pig for 2 days though. Remdog
I was told to get the shots and stay awake (I am a recovering alcoholic) while they pulled, yanked, hammered, smashed, and drilled my wisdom teeth out. My advice to you, GET PUT TO SLEEP, and you'll be fine. Oh, and the only pain I had was watching them do it.
getemmj
Well I just had my wisdom teeth pulled two weeks ago. The actual pulling is not bad since i was knocked out. The only advice I can give you is to take your medicine and do not try and rush eating normal foods again. I tried to eat popcorn like two days after the extraction and it was the worst pain I have ever felt.
sureshot25
I gotta get all 4 pulled out sometime over the summer and I'm already dreading it.
jrlocke
They told me I would need mine cut out 5 or so years ago and I have yet to have it done. I haven't been to the dentist since then. I have the occasional day where I get this mind numbing pain on the back of molars. It hurts but goes away. My advice if you have insurance get it down now otherwise you will certainly pay for it like I am. My teeth have been pushed all out of whack because of my wisdom teeth coming in. 2 out of the 4 have crowned and the others are not far off.
