Wisdom Teeth

Well, you're probably not going to like this story, but I'm probably an extreme case. All four of my wisdom teeth were impacted, coming out around 45 degrees from vertical. To extract them, I had general anaesthesia, and they actually had to break each tooth into several parts.

Once I woke up from general (which sucks, mind you), I had to sit up completely straight for half the day following, a terrible feeling when you just want to go to sleep. This was to prevent blood from flowing down into my stomach and aid the clotting.

Following the surgery, because I'm very, very prone to cankers, and there was a lot of swelling around the extraction sites, I could barely eat for a full week.

The most important thing is to keep your mouth clean, because I've heard a dry socket, where there's an infection in one or all of the wounds, is about the most painful experience you can go through.

Good luck.

My legs started to turn to jelly and I started to pass out after reading this. I'm petrified of dentists. I go to them, I don't avoid them, I do what they tell me and I brush all the time. But I'm afraid. I don't like the drilling when it has to be done.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out in the service. First in San Diego. We were ordered to do it. I'm like "what the hell do these people care if there are wisdom teeth in?" But I got them taken care of, except for one. They were supposed to have me return to get the other one done but they never got around to it. That is, until they caught up to me in Pearl Harbor. Then I had to go through the same thing again. Basically, all you do is get that anesthesia, let it start to work, and let them get that tooth out. I did not have any problems like SeanO had. I just felt a lot of tugging.

I've been having to need them pulled since Thanksgiving of 04 but have kept putting it off. At one time, all 4 were coming in at the same time, but my bottom ones have gone back in, my top right one is just about all the way out, and the top left one is maybe only out a quarter of the way. Haven't had any pain from them though. Good luck on getting them pulled.

What do you mean they went back in. Were they shy? No, seriously, can a tooth do that?

I have no idea, but I remember when they were starting to come in because it felt like I had pieces of food stuck back there, and it'd drive me crazy.

I went to go see a dentist yesterday. I couldn't take this jaw pain anymore and I just said "no fsck this sh!t I'm gonna go see a dentist" and because I'm not insured :( I had to pay to get a checkup. I told the dentist that I had been experiencing severe jaw pain that was just throbbing for the past few weeks. I had X-Rays taken of the areas where I said I felt pain, and she goes "Hm, just what I suspected..."

At first I thought my wisdom teeth were just impacted but it's worse than that. She told me that I have a tooth abscess. Unfortunately, I had a cavity that worsened to the point where it went through the tooth into the root and now it's irritating the pulp. She insisted that I get a root canal to save the tooth, which I kindly objected and instead opted for tooth extraction. She was unable to do it so she referred me to an oral surgeon in which I must make an appointment to visit today. Now for the time being, she gave me a prescription for these weak painkillers (Ibuprofen) and some oral penicillin to prevent the tooth pulp from getting infected. So far I've been taking them and the pain is still strong, just not ridiculously throbbing like it was before my meds.

Ugh, I feel like crap until I get my tooth extracted.

Root canals are highly exaggerated. I know from experience that getting one, is kinda like getting an elongated cavity, it just takes 2-4 times to fix it (though that's a lot of money for someone uninsured). I actually got one by mistake (my dentist said, oops, that was just a cavity, but she was in too deep :( ). That was the last time I saw her, I'm going to a new guy on Monday about this chipped tooth. Good luck with the wisdom teeth KC.

AN UPDATE:

I just got home from the specialist who removed my tooth. The tooth, which was the third molar in my upper right section of teeth, by the way, according to him was decayed to the point where he needed to break the tooth and remove it in pieces. Needless to say, the procedure took about a few minutes, and I was in and out of there in no time. It was a simple tooth extraction, but now I'm on Vicodin again, and I can't feel my face lol.

Awesome. My pain is gone. For now. They took X-Rays again and it seems like I have an impacted wisdom tooth in that area :(

KC tooth AM CRY

I went to the dentist this week for the first time in 3 years and I'm proud to say that nothing was wrong. They just needed the clean it which took about 45 minutes and wasn't very pleasant, but now I'm just glad I got it over with and know I don't have much to worry about, especially since I don't have any wisdom teeth at all (the dentist called me blessed :spin: )

just a happy story admist all these horrific tales of pain and sorrow.
