brutushayesosu
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070416/ap_on_...a_tech_shooting I didnt see this anywhere so I guess I'll post it and get some thoughts. Started at 7:15 am and continued 2 hours later in a classroom. Sounds like he got away with murdering someone close to him then came back and massacred a classroom. I think the campus shouldve been on lockdown to begin with. If I knew that someone was gunned down in a dorm room and the guman was on the loose on campus then I would stay away from going out and to class. I think when the full story gets out there are going to a be a lot outraged people, specifically the families of those killed today. The massacre Monday took place almost eight years to the day after the Columbine High bloodbath near Littleton, Colo. On April 20, 1999, two teenagers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before taking their own lives. Who knows if that has anything to do with it or if its just a coincidence. At least 31 dead according to ABC News. Could get higher...sickening
Pirate
This is just crazy. I have been following it all morning. So many news sources are reporting different death counts and injuries. There is some seriously poor reporting going on out there.
TheMadcap
F**king terrible. I can't understand what the hell is wrong with people. Those poor kids.
brutushayesosu
I was in class at Ohio State. Ive always feared that something like this could happen here. I overheard someone talking about and came home to turn on the tv to see that it was way, way worse than what they were saying. One of my teachers always preaches that Tomarrow is not Guaranteed, just another example of that being true.
Sean O
******* crazy, reminds me of columbine a decade ago. I remember seeing that on my high school campus, and this is much worse. What could possibly force someone to do this? I had about as bad an experience in college as you can imagine. I don't get it.
Pirate
Two people were shot and killed in the education hall at Kent State where I went to school and the whole community was rocked. Reports from the AP are that 31 people are dead... 31. This is horrible.
brutushayesosu
If I were to play the First 48 game, I'd say that the shooter killed someone close to him first, then singled out that classroom for another reason. Just doesnt sound like anything is random about the shootings. The reports might change but I didnt see where the shootings happened outside or in the hallways of the buildings. Like he had a plan and followed through with it.

brutushayesosu
Just compare this to a suicide bomber killing 40 on a subway train or the like. Is there a difference? Or is it just where this happened that sets it apart?
Pirate
Wikipedia reports that Michael Jackson is the shooter. I hate the world. Conflicting reports on how many are dead, an "encyclopedia" documenting that Michael Jackson just murdered 31 people, and some idiot with a plan to murder college students. I grabbed this screen from Wikipedia before they changed it seconds later. I knew the fine editors of wiki would mess this up:

Pirate
Why would people attempt to make light of this situation. Were are looking at the deadliest shooting in US history. Think about that for a second... the deadliest ever.

RmembrZito75
I really see no reason in killing random people or even killing people you hate. It just doesn't make any sense.
redsox
Why do people have to do things like this? I don't know who is to blame other than the culprit - television, parents for not raising him right, peers, community? Who the hell knows. Maybe the law makers should make their gun policy more stricter and invest more time and energy in putting these black-market gun dealers in jail. My professor told me that the students were shot execution style. Think about you standing in line and knowing for sure that you are about to be shot to death. Why the hell can't people follow the policy of "Live and Let Live?" Why are some people so hell bent on taking down as much as they can with them when things are not going right for them? If drastic measures are to be taken, then I say there should be a checkpoint at all the entrances of schools/colleges. They should have metal detectors and screens and need to scan everyone entering the premises. The tuition is so high that why can't these colleges/universities invest some of into this type of protection? I just pray to God that the families/friends of the victims find some sort of closure. The loss of a close one is always hard to deal with. Let God be with them.

But, we shouldn't have to live in a police state because there have been 2 university shootings in 25 years. The whole point, theoretically, of living in the US is that we have our own freedom. I'm sick enough that our government and media have tried to make us feel as unsafe as possible over the last 5 1/2 years as it is. This sucks, but it's an isolated incident. There will always be crazy people.

Timp
SO messed up...31 people. 31. I don't know how that many people can get killed in one mass like this. Makes me afraid to go to college. How can you get SO mad (or whatever this guys issue was) that you kill this many people?
Dagger147
Please refrain from bringing politics and obvious hatred of our government into this thread. This tragedy has absolutely nothing to do with politics. This was done by one individual. Instead of bashing our president and other members of our government, we should be praying for the victim's families.
brutushayesosu
My biggest question is why the university officials thought that the first situation was under control when no one was arrested? They said that they had reason to believe that the suspect was heading away from the campus area and possibly out of state. They did lock down that dorm but I think there shouldve been better communication between the officials and the students. Sending out emails that arrive after the 2nd incident is going to cause this whole thing to end up in the courts after the families of the decease sue the university. Conditions for filing wrongful death claim The death must have been caused, in whole or in part, by the defendant's conduct, even though there was no direct intention to kill the victim. The defendant must have been deemed negligent or strictly liable for the victim's death. Also the deceased has dependent party such as family members who have suffered from emotional and monetary damages as a result of the death. I think they were negligent but im also not a law student so what do I know anyways.
fred13
I think to understand this better, you have to look at it more objectively. The killer may have been suffering some sort of mental illness. Things like this happen. Its wrong to sit back and say what could make someone do that, when they might not even be in control of their actions. I'm not condoning what this person did, but you can't pass judgment onto him until the situation can be examined further. People may be wanting the death penalty for this, like the families of these people, but the correct thing to do may be to just lock him in an institution and treat him. You obviously do not know that the gunman shot himself and the police are having a hard time identifying him as a result. He had no ID on himself as well. The only thing the know is that he was asian and what kind of clothes he was wearing.
