BigDaddyCool
Like someone who went "The first 48" earlier, I'm going to go a little "CSI" here and say this: In order for an accurate timeline to be established, in order for answers to be found, in order for the who, what, where, whens and whys to be answered they must first collect all of the evidence and process the scene. All we have right now is speculation as to why this happened. It might take several days for the true answers to come in. So far, what we know is this: - the gumnam killed 32 people and wounded 15 others before taking his own life. - Witnesses described him as a man in his 20s, wearing a maroon cap and a black leather jacket. - The rampage began about 7:15 a.m. ET at West Ambler Johnston, a coeducational residence hall that houses 895 people. - The gunman was armed with a 9-mm pistol and a .22-caliber handgun. - he killed two people there before making his way to Norris Hall, an engineering classroom building on the opposite end of the 2,600-acre campus. - About 9:15, the gunman chained the doors of the classroom building so his potential victims could not escape and police could not enter. There, he shot as many as 46 more people. - It wasn't until 9:26 did the first warning to students and employees go out by e-mail. By then, the classroom shooting was well under way. - Police and campus officials believe(d) that the first shooting was an isolated incident based on what they knew at that time. - Jamal Albarghouti, a graduate student, began shooting video footage on his cell phone which has since aired on CNN. In the footage, 27 shots can be heard. - Police said there had been bomb threats on campus over the past two weeks but that they had not determined a link to the shootings. So far that's it. No one seems to know yet if the two shootings are related, if this was connected to the bomb threats or if the Science & Engineering building was targeted for a specific reason. There is also speculation that the gunman was looking for his girlfriend, but that has not been confirmed. CNBC. FOX News, MSNBC and CNN have continuing coverage on this throughout the day. However, let's wait until all of the evidence has been processed before we start speculating on why this happened.
brutushayesosu
If you kill 31 people you have mental distress. You are mad, simply mad. 32 people dead means at least 32 bullets. How many more for the wounded? Its not like the guns and ammo fell out of the sky and landed in the lap of someone with "mental distress" or someone going 'postal'. This guy had a plan and carried it out. Ask yourself this, why didnt he just kill as many people as he could at the 1st site, the dorm? That is if the 2 are related but, most likely they are. BigDaddyCool
Do you think our country's gun laws will change after this massacre? I seriously doubt it. More restrictive gun control laws don't appear to be the answer. If you want an example of where this is true then look at Washington D.C.. They have the most restrictive con control laws in the country and yet they have the highest rate of murders committed with handguns in the nation, so something is not happening to get these guns out of the hands of criminals. The problem is this: how do you pass laws to get guns out of the hands of criminals and gang-bangers while respecting the rights of hunters, collectors and hobbiests to posses guns of their own? If there are any NRA members on this board maybe you can put in your two cents on this. Earlier Pres. Bush said that he still supported the rights of people to bear arms but at the same time, the laws of our land must be obeyed by those people. I agree. I now live in a Red State and we have friends who live further north of us in a rural area. Our friends have a need to possess guns up there because there have been times when they needed those guns to protect their children from wildlife. My wife asked: "what do I tell her? Do I tell her she can't have a gun that could save her or one of the kids from a Bear or Mountain Lion attack? How do I justify that?" I don't think that stricter laws are the answer. Common sense would be the start in finding the answer.

brutushayesosu
Damn Kccitystar, where did you find those sites?!?!? Removing all my posts about Wayne Chiang. He is not a good person. Coming out. I am not the shooter. Through this experience, I have received numerous death threats, slanderous accusations, and my phone is out of charge from the barrage of calls. Local police have been notified of the situation. My original intention was to wait until I got AdSense on my site and donating all the proceeds to Charity. However, this situation has now spiraled out of control. I am now confirming that I am not the shooter. I will be available for interview by a news agency to clear my name, talk about the experience, and give my opinion on how the situation could have turned out better if other students were allowed to be armed. I will only speak with individuals who are interested in donating to charities resulting from today's events. carter
What I want to know is why a family needs all those guns (not just the 3 pictured above, there's more in the galleries). This is just a sign of trouble to come.
AstroEric
My wife is from Dublin, Va., which is just right down the road. Her friends have all graduated, but it was a rough day of making sure she didn't know anyone amongst the dead. We discussed this in my ENGL 102 class today. My students were really upset and scared. I had to use a little humor to quell their nerves, because they were really freaking out. But just at the moment that I talked about how now they can appreciate that I shut the door to lock them out if they're late, one of my late students (with no idea what we were talking about) rattled the doorknob really loudly. Half my class screamed and fell out of their chairs. What a weird day.
BigDom
It just makes me sick to see this happen especially after my best friends dad (click dad for link to report) just got shot in the chest, in almost the same situation, in public. How can people be this sick, this cruel to come up with things like this. Getting shot and injured is going too far. Killing 1 person is going to far, what gives him the right to end someones life that God and the deceased parents created? Now what gives him the right to kill 32 more people? Ugh, I know this won't be the last of these, but something has to give. It shouldn't be that easy for people to get guns.

RaptorQuiz
I agree with Medric. That is some powerful, yet simple and to-the-point writing, Hokie20. I am impressed. I wrote for my high-school and college newspapers - and I had the chance to write about something of this type only once - a response to the 9/11 attacks. I hope I handled it with as much poise and pointedness as you did.

And in that moment the 30 students knew just one thing:they were going to die. It's not possible. Why in the world this things happen? They were standing on a line and they knew that they were going to die. Why?For what?Just for his girlfriend.
