philthepat
Reds Hire Barnes as new GM Cincinnati, Oh, The Cincinnati Reds CEO John Allen today announced the resignation of Wayne Krivsky after just a year in his role as general manager, and the immediate appointment of Philip Barnes into the vacant role. Krivsky is said to have left due to personal circumstances but wouldn't go into further details with members of the gathered press and media. Barnes is seen as a shock appointment given his young age and many Reds fans are said to be unsure as to what the former youth coach will bring to the role. He did however have a few words for the fans to try and reassure them that he is dedicated to taking the organisation forward and bringing success back to the franchise, whos last world series win was in 1990. Barnes stated, 'I am here to do a job and give the great fans here what they deserve to achieve. I have the full support and backing from everyone here, and firmly believe that we can have a great season. The national league, in my opinion, is a very open race and if we can push for a quick start we can really build a base for a fantastic season. We have a great bunch of young guys here and im sure they are all as keen as anyone to bring glory back to Cincinnati.' Opening day rosters are set to be announced in the coming days and it will be interesting to see if any deals will be made as Barnes puts his own mark on the team. philthepat
Reds Add Youth and Power to Roster SP Santos, RP Majewski, 1B Hatteberg 1B LaRoche, RP Grabow Cincinnati, Oh The Cincinnati Reds front office today announced that they have agreed in principle with the Pittsburgh Pirates to trade ownership of pitchers Victor Santos and Gary Majewski and first baseman Scott Hatteberg for first baseman Adam LaRoche and relief pitcher John Grabow. A further prospect, to be named later, is also part of the deal. Reds GM Phil Barnes is said to be pleased with the trade and is looking forward to utilizing them in his roster. Barnes said, 'Its a very exciting time right now. I knew that we needed some extra power in the lineup and Adam brings us that. It also adds the the great youth of the side which is of long term interest to the franchise. John Grabow gives us another strong arm for the 'pen and will be an important contributer this year.' In what seems to be an everyday occurrence around the Reds, the move to get LaRoche is another surprise with the power hitting first baseman only recently moving to Pittsburgh. But the player himself was more than pleased with the move. 'I am really looking forward to meeting the guys.' he said. 'They have a really exciting team over there and im just pleased im gonna be a part of it. I really believe we can be a contender this year and I promise the fans that good times are just around the corner.' Other rumors coming out of Cincinnati suggest that lefty pitcher Eddie Guardado could be the long term closer for the club. Guardado, the former Seattle and Minnesota player, is currently rehabbing after shoulder surgery. But it is understood that he is seen as a more reliable candidate for the closer role above Dave Weathers.

philthepat
Opening Day Roster Announced Shock inclusion of young centerfielder The Cincinnati Reds today unveiled their lineup for their forthcoming assult on the National League Central. Both the pitching staff and lineup have a mixture of youth and experience. Introducing your 2007 Cincinnati Reds: Pitching Rotation Aaron Harang Bronson Arroyo Eric Milton Kyle Lohse Matt Belisle The very fabric of the team and its important that all five of them stay healthy and consistant. Harang is the undisputed ace on the staff with his great strikeout ratio. In the Bullpen Kirk Saarloos Mike Stanton Bill Bray Dave Weathers Todd Coffey John Grabow Eddie Guardado Saarloos will be used as long relief. Eddie Guardado has been named as the teams closer following a scan on his shoulder which shows no signs of any further problems. Should he struggle to fill the role, Dave Weathers is always there to stand in. It is also rumored that Homer Bailey could earn a few spot starts should need be and depending on his own performance at AAA. Lineup and Bench 1B Adam Dunn 2B Brandon Phillips 3B Edwin Encarnacion SS Alex Gonzalez LF Josh Hamilton CF Ken Griffey Jr RF Ryan Freel Bench C Javier Valentin SS Juan Castro 2B Mark Bellhorn Adam LaRoche CF Jerry Gil The standout observation is the inclusion on the bench of young Jerry Gil. Gil who has played only a handful of big league games in his career, plays centerfield but can also be utilized as a shortstop. He has been included on the roster for his speed and defensive ability, and may be used as a leadoff man further down the line. Adam Dunn has been moved to first base so that the amazing comeback player Josh Hamilton can play left field. Ken Griffey Jr has remained in centerfield despite rumors suggesting that he may be moved to right.

philthepat
Result from the Great American Ballpark Phillips Walk Off Caps Comeback in Opener Cincinnati Oh, If if this is a sign of things to come from the newly run Reds team then fans had better make sure they are well stocked on headache tablets. The opening game of the season was looking like one to forget going into the ninth inning and trailing 5-2. The pitching matchup put Carlos Zambrano against Aaron Harang. Both started with a quick and efficient up and down first with no hits by either team. Harang again wasted no time in the second and then the Reds offense missed a glorious chance to open the game up. After Ken Griffey Jr had flied out to center, the Reds had three consecutive singles to load the bases and take a hold of the game. David Ross came up to the plate and hit a long fly ball to right field. Encarnacion tagged at third to score on the sacrifice fly but the throw from Jacque Jones was pinpoint and Encarnacion was thrown out at home to end the inning at 0-0. The Reds were made to pay for missing the chance. Encarnacion slides unsuccessfully at home Mark DeRosa led off the top of the third for the Cubs with a double with Izturis immediately following with a single. Then the danger man Alfonso Soriano picked up an RBI double to score the first run of the game. First blood to Chicago and the Reds support were expecting a response. Carlos Zambrano had other ideas however as Harang was quickly dealt with for the first out. Ryan Freel earned a walk but the next two batters were overpowered and the score remained 1-0 to the Cubs. Harang rebounded in the top of the fourth with a quick 1-2-3 and the impressive Zambrano followed suit to end the inning. The game was really opened up in the top of the fifth as Zambrano bunted himself onto first. Alfonso Soriano once again showed why they paid all the money for him by hitting a ball that soared over the centerfield wall for a two run bomb. The score was 3-0 to the Cubs and the Reds desperately needed a response. Alex Gonzalez earned a walk and up came the player of the game Ryan Freel. He went yard as he launched a long fly over the left field wall into the stands and the Reds were back in business. That put them to within a run of tying and got the crowd back into the game. Ryan Freel blasts a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 5th But things didnt get any easier in the top of the sixth as Harang walked Ramirez and then left a poorly located fastball over the plate which Jacque Jones made him pay for. That put the Reds back down by three and things were looking grim again. Bottom of the inning and a response was once again needed but failed to materialize. Mike Stanton was brought into the game for the seventh and was assisted by his defense with a swiftly turned double play to end the inning after he had given up a one out single to Cesar Izturis. Then after a lead off double by pinch hitter Javier Valentin the offense stuttered again and failed to bring the runner home. The score remained at 5-2 to the Cubs going into the eighth. The next nine batters went down in order and it came to all or nothing time for the Reds. The Chicago Cubs brought in their closer, Ryan Dempster, to try and slam the door shut and pick up the win for Carlos Zambrano. Alex Gonzalez picked up his third walk of the game to give hope and then catcher David Ross had the patience to work a 3-1 count on Dempster and then saw one he liked and hit a drive which just tickled the left field foul pole for a two run bomb. 5-4 and there was still work to do. Ryan Freel hit a bloop single into right field and proceeded to steal his second base of the game to put the tying run in scoring position. When Adam Dunn couldnt get it done it was down to second baseman Brandon Phillips to try and get the runner in to tie the game. Clearly he was in a rush to get home as he jumped on the very first pitch he saw and watched it as it sailed just over the fence past Sorianos glove as he scaled the wall. A two run walk off blast sent the Reds fans into raptures and ensured they won the opener in dramatic fashion. The Reds dugout watches as David Ross gives them a sniff of a comeback and Phillips celebrates his walk off winner Player of the game Ryan Freel said after the game, 'Obviously we wanted to win the opener, especially with it being at home. We always have the faith in ourselves that we can come back at any time and I think that showed today. When we saw that blast dropping over the wall it was a great relief because we know we havent played great, but we have still managed to dig out a win.' philthepat
Result from the Great American Ballpark Comeback Special Reds Fall in 9th Cincinnati, Oh For the first four innings of wednesday nights game it looked like being a pitchers duel between the outstanding Ted Lilly and Bronson Arroyo. Both slingers finished the game with a no decision after each made one vital slip, and was eventually decided by a Derek Lee single in the ninth. Reds favourite Arroyo started in efficient style, allowing just two hits and taking only twenty one pitches to get through the first two innings. Lefty Lilly was equally impressive allowing no hits and striking out three over the same two frames of work. Phillips turns a double play in style The fifth inning started well for Arroyo as he got the first out on a shallow fly by Felix Pie to center and caught Izturis looking for the second out. Then it all started to fall apart. Ted Lilly came to the plate and was hit by an inside fastball to take first. Derek Lee then singled into right which promptly brought out the manager for a conference with Arroyo. Michael Barrett took full advantage of the Reds slinger's loss of control and lofted a hanging sinker into the left field stands. 3-0 Cubbies and with Lilly pitching a gem things were looking bleak for the 41,664 strong crowd. Arroyo came back strong in the sixth, striking out two, before a resurgence from the Reds which brought back memories of the previous game. Ryan Freel did what every good lead off man does by collecting a walk to start the ball rolling. Hamilton and Phillips were duly dispatched and Ken Griffey Jr was intentionally walked. Up stepped Edwin Encarnacion who seemed determined to prove a point to the Cubs bench. He caught hold of a pitch and hit it into the top tier of the left field stand, which just about swung around the foul pole, and was later measured at nearly 420 feet. Tied game and the Reds had once again come from three runs behind. Mound visit for Arroyo after he starts to go wild in the 5th and Encarnacion ties the game with a towering 3 run homer Kirk Saarloos made his first appearance of the season in the seventh and had a rough time over his 2.1 innings of work. He gave up five hits including the winning run on an rbi single for Derek Lee in the ninth. Bob Howry came in for the bottom of the inning for the save to put paid to any fairytale ending to this particular game. Reds manager Jerrey Narron was impressed with his teams fighting spirit during the game. He said, 'As soon as we gave up that three run shot you could see that it didnt really affect my players at all. They knew they had the ability to get back into the game, and that showed when we tied the game. I thought we would go on a win from there but it was not to be. Lilly showed what a quality pitcher he is today and full credit has to go to him. We just couldnt get the decisive hits off of him.' Up tomorrow is the rubber game of the series as Jason Marquis goes against Eric Milton. Marquis will be looking to start strong in his new career as a Cub after signing for a contract worth $21m in the offseason. For Milton it will be a game to put past horrors to bed after going a career low 1/3 of a inning facing the Cubs last year, and has since had surgery on his elbow. vs. Marquis (0-0) 0.00 - Milton (0-0) 0.00 Other notes of interest: The minor league season starts tomorrow as the Louisville Bats take on the Richmond Braves in the International League matchup. Highly touted prospect Homer Bailey takes the mound in the opener for the Bats.
philthepat
Trade Rumor: Baldelli a Possibility? Cincinnati, Oh There have been increasing whispers around the league about the Cincinnati Reds apparent interest in acquiring the services of Tampa Bays young centerfielder Rocco Baldelli. Baldelli , who turns 27 in september, is one of the many young studs in the D-Rays outfield. It is believed that they will be looking for some pitching to help bolster their chances of battling in the hugely difficult AL East, and the Reds seem keen to deal as soon as possible. One possibility could be prospect Homer Bailey, but the Reds management are unlikely to want to depart with the fans favourite and potential ace. When asked about the rumors today, Baldelli responded in a subtle way, suggesting that a move may be imminent. He said, 'Hey, this is modern day baseball. Its all about business these days and obviously teams are always looking at ways to improve their rosters. Im very happy here in Tampa with all the young guys we have here, but im not stupid enough to think that im going to be here forever. I have to look at all options.' The Cincinnati Reds today wrap up their opening series against the Cubs, with the series tied 1-1. Their next opponents are the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Great American Ballpark and they will be looking to build a base on which to start their season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry this hasnt been updated for a while.... been on holiday. Was going to let you all know that before I went but the site was down. philthepat
No Walk in the Park for Reds Cincinnati, Oh After starting out well, the Reds lost their opening series to the Cubs and were left wondering what might have been after stranding a total of twelve baserunners today. Chicago starter Jason Marquis was having control problems all day, walking no less than eight batters, but the Cincinnati offense was unable to get the clutch hits required to drive the runners home. Both teams opened their scoring in the first inning, Alfonso Soraino doubling in Derek Lee after he opened the game with a sharp single to right. The Reds immediate response was lead off man Ryan Freels second homer of the season to straight away center. A 1-2-3 inning followed for starter Eric Milton and the game moved into the bottom of the second. Cincinnati loaded the bases with only one out but the Cubs were bailed out by a vital strikeout on Freel and Adam Dunn worked the count but ended the inning by flying out to left. Starter Eric Milton takes a shot to the leg Marquis control problems cost the Cubbies in the third inning as he loaded the bases with a lead off single and two walks. Alex Gonzalez then picked up an RBI after a run was walked home. The Cubs immediately had guys up in their bullpen, but Marquis once again got out of jail free with a pop out and strikeout to end the inning. The score was 2-1 to the Reds. Another 1-2-3 inning followed for Milton as he was looking well in control of the game, but once again the Reds offense couldnt get the job done despite a lead off hit by Freel. The inevitable happened in the fifth when Mark DeRosa homered to tie the game, but Milton ended the inning throwing just seven pitches. The Reds offense tried to take advantage of the lax pitching in the bottom of the fifth, but only came up with one run to take the lead once more. Josh Hamilton scores the go ahead run, but Ramirez takes it back straight away But no sooner had the Reds taken the lead, the Cubs came back with another lead off home run from Aramis Ramirez. The score was once again tied and things went from bad to worse as DeRosa hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to drive in the go ahead run. The game went quiet until the ninth inning when centerfielder Felix Pie tagged on an insurance run as the Reds long ball troubles continued. Bob Howry, the Cubs closer, came in to shut the door but the Reds rallied once more and managed to score again themselves. But it was a fruitless effort as they came up short and were left to suffer their second defeat of the season and lose the series 2-1. Asked about the teams defeat in the post game press conference, manager Jerry Narron was unconcerned with the lack of clutch hitting. He said, 'Look, we're only three games into the season. Guys are still trying to find their swings and im sure they will start getting the hits that will count very soon.' Then he was asked about the possibility of an early season trade, to which he responded, 'We are always looking at things, thats why we have scouts out there. If there is someone that will improve the team then we'll make our move.' Homer Bailey made his first start of the season for the Louisville Bats and had a solid outing. He managed seven strong innings and even picked up a hit in the fifth. Bailey: 7IP, 8H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 1K, 2.57ERA The Bats won the game 4-3 with Jon Coutlangus picking up the win, and Rheal Cormier earning a save. philthepat
Reds take opener despite Maholm gem Cincinnati, Oh The Reds today moved their early season record back to .500 as they outlasted the Pittsburgh Pirates in a game the visitors will be disappointed to lose. Only a late run scored by pinch hitting speedster Jerry Gil finally secured the win after Pirates starter went seven strong innings, allowing only four hits and two runs, fanning eight opposing batters. Opposing him on the mound was Kyle Lohse who also had a good outing, allowing just one earned run off five hits over seven and two thirds. Jason Bay got the game off to a flying start with a solo home run at the top of the first inning to give the visiting team a great start. The Reds offense bailed out their starter however in the bottom of the same inning as back to back doubles by Hamilton and Phillips scored the first run, and Griffey Jr. picked up his first RBI of the season when he hit a sharp single into left. The Reds were on top and they would never surrender that lead in the game. Jason Bay gives Pittsburgh the lead, but Brandon Phillips ties the scores with an RBI double The game then turned into a pitching duel for the next few innings as Maholm continued to show why he is going to be an important member of the Pirates rotation, and Lohse held the slim lead with an impressive battle. The Reds tagged on an insurance run in the eighth as rookie Jerry Gil came on in a pinch hitting role and lined a single into center. A stolen base and an error moved him round to third base. Josh Hamilton then brought him home to give closer Eddie Guardado a two run cushion to work with. Three outs later the Reds had their second win in the bag. Coming out of the game with an unfortunate first loss of the season, Pirates slinger Paul Maholm said, 'Obviously I am pleased with my performance today but to come away with the loss makes it pretty pointless! Fair dues to the other team but our guys are feeling pretty down at the moment. We will pick it up though and we can make up for it in the next two games here.' A coaching visit to the mound for Lohse, Josh Hamilton singles in the third run of the day for the Reds The Reds now sit top of the NL Central, albeit with just the four games played this season so far. They will be looking to build upon this, and take the series against the Pirates in game two tomorrow afternoon. An interesting matchup sees former Reds pitcher Victor Santos face his old team for the first time. On the mound for Cincinnati will be Matt Belisle making his first start of the year. --VS-- Victor Santos (0-0)-Matt Belisle (0-0) 0.00ERA - 0.00 ERA
