Milwaukee Brewers 2005 Preview

The 2005 Milwaukee Brewers are young, and there is no doubt they have talent. They are carrying a completly new look with them and are hoping it pays off.

Rotation

The Brewers pitching staff isn't all that great, they have an ace in Ben Sheets and then a few average or possible below average pitchers behind him. Like I said Ben Sheets will lead the Brewers pitching staff. He is fallowed by Doug Davis who is coming off of a great year then Chris Capuano, who is starting to blossom into a great young pitcher. Both Doug Davis and Chris Capuano are both lefties which could prove to be good. Next is Victor Santos who is very up and down, not much else to be said. Then Jorge De La Rosa and Jose Capellan will fight for the fith spot. So they have potential like every other player on the team but I just don't think this is there years.

Projected Rotation:

1 Ben Sheets RHP

2 Doug Davis LHP

3 Chris Capuano LHP

4 Victor Santos RHP

5 Jorge De La Rosa LHP/Jose Capellan RHP

Bullpen

The Bullpen is what seems to be the Brewers major weekness. Offseason rookie acquisition Ryan Wagner is so far the expected closer with Derrick Turnbow and Jose Capellan (if not in rotation) to play set up for him. Justin Lehr and Rigo Beltran will be middle relievers and Matt Wise, Jorge De La Rosa (if not in rotation) and Andy Pratt are long relievers and will spot start when needed. The strong point of the bullpen is the Brewers ability and pitch lefties and righties but other than that no much promise here other than Ryan Wagner and Jose Capellan.

Projected Bullpen:

LRP Matt Wise RHP

LRP Andy Pratt LHP

LRP Jorge De La Rosa LHP

MRP Justin Lehr RPH

MRP Rigo Beltran LHP

SU Derrick Turnbow RHP

SU Jose Capellan RHP

CL Ryan Wagner RHP

Catchers

The Brewers catching core consists of a young catcher and an older catcher. Damian Miller will get most of the starts and Chad Moeller will be the catcher for Ben Sheets and when Damian needs a break but thats it. The Brewers don't really have any other catchers to choose from and that could hurt them.

Infield

This is a very young infield with nothing set in stone other than first base. Lyle Overbay will be the starting first baseman on opening day and that's really all we know right now. At second rookie, Rickie Weeks could start, Bill Hall or new acquisition David Eckstien. That all depends on J.J. Hardy the rookie short stop plays well. The Brewers have said that right now J.J. is one of the players the Brewers really want to play but they picked up David Eckstien. Heres how we see it, Bill Hall will sit the bench and play when called apon. If J.J. does better than Rickie Weeks, Eckstien will play at second, if Rickie does better Eckstien will play at short. Third base will be between Russell Branyan and Wes Helms most likely with Helms agains lefties and Branyan against righties.

Outfield

The Brewers outfield is changed completely, no one from last year is starting this year, everyone's a new acquistion. In left field, the Brewers slugger, will be Carlos Lee, who is known for is bat and not his glove. In center is the speedy Joey Gathright who will lead off and expect a lot of stolen bases. Over in right field is Craig Monroe, Monroe is expected to produce and is looking for a great year in Milwaukee. Geoff Jenkins is the back up outfielder playing left or right field. Bill Hall is expected to sub in and out in the outfield when needed.

Projected Batting Order:

1 Joey Gathright CF

2 Rickie Weeks 2B

3 Lyle Overbay 1B

4 Carlos Lee LF

5 Craig Monroe RF

6 Russel Branyan/Wes Helms 3B

7 J.J. Hardy/David Eckstien SS

8 Damian Miller C

Top Prospects

1 Prince Fielder 1B

2 Rickie Weeks 2B

3 J.J. Hardy SS

4 Mark Rogers SP

5 Sterling Johnson RP

6 Orlando Cruz SP

7 Corey Hart UTIL

8 Dave Krynzel OF

9 Andrian Hernandez SP

10Chris Saenz RP

Impact Rookie:

Rickie Weeks/ J.J. Hardy

We couldn't choose between these two, they both are going to be huge deciding factors and depending on who is doing better will decide who starts over David Eckstien. Look for fire works with there two.

Conclusion

The Milwaukee Brewers are going to do well on offence but there pitching just isn't that good, it will be the deciding factore of the 2005 season. The future is bright, very bright, just not this soon, we project 4th place with 70 to 79 wins.
