A Mariner Dynasty: Righting The Ship

Call this a "take 2".

I started a dynasty a few weeks ago with the idea in mind that I took over the Mariners before Bavasi and the bunch made the mess they did this 06-07 offseason. Well about 15 games in, I was screwing around with 2005MVP Editor (great utility BTW) and accidentally projected the league pitching stats. Big whoops there. Heres the dead thread.

I decided to restart my dynasty with a different goal in mind. Hey, lets just try and fix this mess laid out by our fearless (and apparently brainless) leaders. So I took the opening day rosters via KG's Roster Set and made a few personal aesthetic adjustments. Then I added in my own personal sliders on ALL-STAR mode. Seems to be a good mix.

All that stands ahead is what am I going to do with the roster before I get rolling with the season. To make it more interesting, I set out to do what most Mariner fans would love to do.

BRING GRIFFEY HOME.

Now how to accomplish this and keep it some what fair? I think I came up with a good move that rids me of albatross and gets me Junior back in one fell swoop.

Griffey Returns to the Emerald City!

With a ton of money changing hands. The Mariners send Richie Sexson and pitcher, Jeff Weaver to Cincinnati for Ken Griffey Jr. and pitcher, Eric Milton. If Griffey could be coined as the definition of "injury prone", Milton surely would be the definition of "disappointment". Milton has been beaten like a pinata his two seasons in Cinci. While being paid like a #2 starter, he has repayed the Reds by posting ERA's of 6.47 (2005) and 5.15 (2006). The Mariners on the other hand are losing a consitant 35 homer, 100+ RBI machine in Richie Sexson. It seems to be almost a purely PR move in bringing Griffey back to Seattle. Whether he can stay healthy and put up quality numbers is a big risk by Mariner management. He is also rumored to be returning to centerfield (moving Ichiro back to his home in right).

All in all, the salary swap is almost a wash. Weaver will return to the NL where he showed flashes of brilliance in the World Series last year. While the Reds also will be putting on display maybe the most pure power one-two punches in baseball featuring Adam Dunn and Richie Sexson. The Mariners in return get a project pitcher and the cities beloved prodigal son back to give it a second go around. It would seem both sides are happy about this move.

Richie will give the Reds a big bat at first and the deal rids themselves of Milton. I intern, got rid of Weaver and brought Griffey back in what probably loses me more talent than I acquired. Fair enough I think. Besides, Broussard is more than capable taking over in Richie's absence at first. I will be doing more platooning than I want but it'll mostly be involving Ibanez, Broussard and Vidro. So it isn't too bad. Vidro will be the one sitting the bench a lot with Griffey returning to the outfield. Here is the basic layout:

RF Ichiro

3B Beltre

CF Griffey

DH Ibanez

LF Guillen

1B Broussard

C Johjima

SS Betancourt

2B Lopez

bench:

DH/IF Vidro

Util Bloomquist

OF Ellis

C Burke

...with the pitching rounding out like this:

1.Hernandez

2.Washburn

3.Batista

4.Ramirez

5.Milton

LR White

MR Reitsma

MR O'Flaherty

MR Davis

SU Sherrill

SU Lowe

CL Putz

========================================

Seems to be a solid team all around with some youngsters coming up. I still am not sure whether to re-sign or trade Ichiro. It may be interesting what I could get for him in a deal. Especially with Adam Jones sitting in AAA ready to take a spot in the OF. Also on the cusp is Wladimir Balentien. He may be set to take over for Guillen in left field late this season or to start 2008.

I guess the best thing about this roster is the flexibility I have. I have good youth coming through the system and the right players are on short term deals. Should be fun to see it play out.

Now if you can bring back A-Rod, Randy Johnson, Jamie Moyer, Jay Buhner, and Edgar Martinez, I'll be REALLY impressed.

Seriously though, that would be wonderful if the real life Mariners did that.

Nice twist bringing Griffey back. Good Luck.

Any chance A-Rod might be a Mariner?

It crossed my mind... but I think I will let at least some of the season play out and see what happens. Sure would be nice to see ARod back at SS in Seattle. Curious on what kind of deal it would take to get that done? It would almost have to include Beltre ++++. Its a possibility I guess. Will have to wait and see. About Edgar. I kept it the same as in my last dynasty thread. I fired Hargrove and made Edgar my manager.

I'm already 2 series into the season and my team is hitting out-of-this-world. Off to a hot start with the bats is an understatement. So far I'm 4-2 and believe it or not, Milton pitched a helluva game for me against Cleveland in his Mariner debut. Griffey is also hitting to the tune of .500+ through the first 6 games. No homers yet but it's just a matter of time.

Will get some screenies and box scores up soon

Just started my series with Boston (4/12). Lost a heart breaker.

Griffey has yet to hit his first dinger of the year but is still chugging along around .450. Actually all my guys are destroying the ball right now save for Johjima. The last two games have brought me a little back down to Earth though. Still though. I'm only 4-4 and my offense couldn't hit any better. Maybe scary days ahead when they cool down.
