MLB07:The Show on the PS3

I can't believe no one has discussed this here?!?

I have to say that I think I've finally retired MVP 05... 07... all of 'em! :) Have any of you played this game on the PS3? I know the PS2 version had a few issues... but the PS3 is far and above the most amazing, engrossing baseball title I have EVER played.

Has anyone else really sat down with this title? Here was a mini-review I wrote:

Wow... just... WOW.

I'm as giddy as a little school girl. This game is AMAZING! I don't even know where to begin.

First off, I just have to say this: If you don't like this game, then you're not a fan of baseball. Period. That's it; There is no discussion. Maybe you like seeing Homeruns all the time or just the amazing plays... but a true fan of baseball will be in love with the "complexity of the simplicity" of this game. EVERYTHING is there: Walks, Hits, "Small Ball," "Long Ball," Pitcher Duels, Slugfests, Wild Throws, Bunt Singles, Player Emotion, Curtain Calls, Lost Bats (in the crowd)... I could go on and on and on... THIS. IS. BASEBALL. Any baseball purist (not just MLB fan) will LOVE this game. It's not a question; It's a fact. I have to say, one of the few (and I mean FEW) things missing from this game (although I may not have seen it yet) are bean balls. I can't recall a CPU pitcher losing one and drilling my batter. I have a feeling it's not there, as I didn't see it in the PS2/PSP version either.

The SCEA team has somehow tweaked this engine to be even BETTER than the PS2 version of MLB '07:The Show. The Pitcher/Batter interface feels even "tighter" and the hit variety is above and beyond the PS2 version. Almost everything you could want is here: screamers down the line, shots in the gap, Texas Leaguers, hits slicing down the line, bad hops. The only glaring omission I've seen is the high chopper in the infield. On the field, player-to-ball interaction is greatly improved. You'll find many plays where the ball pops out of your fielders glove on tough plays, with higher rated players holding on to the ball more often than not. I had a play where my LF did a full out dive on a high pop up in the gap, had the ball bounce off his glove and the CF caught it for the out! Simply one of the most amazing things I've seen while fielding in a baseball video game. Running the bases has definitely been improved. Players were a bit too fast down the first base line which made turning two difficult in the PS2 version. SCEA tweaked this aspect as well and made it much more realistic. It's almost as if all the slider tweaks I made to help solve minor issues in the PS2 version were worked on and improved; Out of the box, this title plays one mean game of baseball!

Off the field, there's so much to this game I could get lost for hours. I haven't even begun to touch upon the Franchise, Career and MOM modes. The gameplay on the diamond is just that good. I'm sure this title will keep me busy on my PS3 for a looooong time.

All in all, I don't regret spending $650 to play this game. Not at all. I'm a bit annoyed that my game won't let me play at night in Oakland (should have seen that one coming) but I'll do whatever it takes to get it fixed. It's probably the one thing anyone should look for as soon as you buy the game. I'd purchase it from somewhere you could return it to just in case you have this issue.

You HAVE TO play this game.

You're crazy to miss out on this game NOW. It plays nothing like the PS2 version from this year. They feel like night and day.

Even if you enjoyed the PS2 version, after playing the PS3 version you could never go back.

You can sit there and really believe it's a PS2 "up-conversion" but if you've played both games you wouldn't be saying that! (Well at least any objective person)

I know plenty of people who hated the PS2 version and love the PS3 version. You're missing out! This is the most complete baseball game we've seen in a LONG time.

Hey Pared,

I enjoyed the 06 show and played it on my ps2, but the relief pitcher recovery thing drove me nuts, I have to be able to manage my bullpen.

We were able to do it with MVP with the stamina mod that tywiggins created, but until I can do something like that in MLB 07 I don't see myself getting a ps3 for it. I rented the ps2 version a few months ago and didn't find enough changes to keep me interested. If the bullpen management could get more realistic then I would go buy a ps3 right now. I actually got into the 06 version and created sliders and started up some forum stuff at Operation Sports forums, but saw little activity and soon abandoned it... Let me know how the bullpen management goes and if you can use the same relievers over and over... If I recall, the pitcher stamina would never go down more than 50%. So you could virtually throw them everyday...

What are the roster/player editing features like?

What exactly are you looking for? Player editing is very advanced. On top of that, SCEA puts out official updates weekly that you can download whenever you want. :w00t:

Do they have the minor leagues in it?

Full AAA and AA. Many, MANY official minor leaguers. You can also play every single AAA and AA team in Minor league games whenever you want. Official jerseys and everything. On the PS3 version only, though.

The relief pitcher issue is actually in the PS3 version but it's not as you think it is. There's a slight bug where the "energy bar" is not properly displaying how tired the pitcher is. There is a work around (forget at the moment) but you can not use the same pitchers over and over... they have progressive fatigue done very, VERY well. It's not perfect, but it's well implemented.

Thats good that they have AAA and AA and you can play thier games, i have been considering if i should get a ps3 or xbox360, and that choice is mainly based on baseball games, and ps3 has mlb 2k7 and mlb 07 the show while xbox360 only has mlb 2k7, thanks for the info about the game.

That is pretty amazing. I remember the days of All-Star Baseball 2004-5 and thier claim of roster updates. I think during the entire 2005 season, they updated the rosters maybe twice. What a joke that was.

Players, in particular, I was curious how far can you edit physical attributes. Batting stances, facial features, body types. That sort of thing.

This game is sounding pretty tight. I may have to break down and bust out.

Oh, tons of editing features. I know you can create people from scratch and the options are pretty amazing for a console baseball game. Not as advanced as I'd like (eye black, sunglasses) but they have a lot of choices.

Batting stances are insane. They even have an audio database that you can assign to the player so the announcers will say "Gomez" instead of "Number 17."

If you can find a way to purchase this game or at least spend a lot of time with it, I can't recommend it enough!
