MLB Draft

Baseball is completely different from basketball or football, in that you should always draft the best player available, as it takes players a couple years at least to get to the MLB, and during that time, they could switch positions or whatever. I'm not going to question the Brewers with that pick because look how good they've done drafting the past few years; they got their whole starting infield within the first couple rounds of the draft.

My thinking with LaPorta is that he ultimately becomes a good trading chip. Obviously, Prince isn't going anywhere.

yah prospects are like investments

you can leave themin the bank and let them grow into something you can oneday use

or

you can cash them in early to buy something you think you might need

either way in the MLB you draft the #1 MLB prospect available no matter who you have where

I understand all that, but no one else on the face of the planet thought he was the best player available

I'm pretty excited about the Indians drafting Beau Mills. We had just 1 pick in the first 3 rounds (thanks alot Roberto Hernandez) and it had to be an impact pick, which Mills seems to be. We lack infield depth in the minors and this kid could be our future 1st baseman or perhaps left fielder (who knows, he might be able to stay at 3rd, but that's unlikely). Mills could turn into a 30-35+ homer type of player while hitting for average. I'm happy.

I think they handled the draft pretty well. I'm suprised ESPN was able to pull it off. Having guys like Gammons, Keith Law and Jim Callis providing analysis helps though

How do you draft a 1B when you have The Prince?

THATS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW

Thats not why the picked him, he wasn't the best player at that point, he was more 20-30 rather than 1-10 pick. Plus, he is no great shakes defensively, he can't switch positions, nor can Fielder. And he's a college bat so it's much less of an "investment" as such. This was a stupid pick. Stupid stupid stupid.

And we don't draft a catcher. Sweet. :(

I mentioned this in the other thread, but Francisco Cervelli.

he can't switch positions

Uh...How do you get that? LaPorta actually projects to be a corner outfielder in the majors. Not a first baseman.

He's not 20-30 on talent. He was 20-30 on most draft boards because he's a Boras client.

He's the best power bat out of college, and unlike most college players who come out their third year, he was a senior, so he's even more experienced. He could be in the majors as early as next year.

It was a reach but it wasn't horrible.

It was a pretty bad reach considering the difference of talent between the top ten and the second ten players in the draft. In general there are large differences, and even in this draft which was considered to be very strong, it was the same.

And he really doesn't project to be a corner outfielder. Ask any scout, he's a first baseman square. He plays outfield occasionally, but his future is at first, there is little doubt.

Bummer no Boerne HS picks this year. I played HS ball with Brad Suttle & Russel Moldenhauer (3rd Round Pick last year), Angels draft picks. They both play with the University of Texas right now.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but this just shows you don't know what you're talking about.

Your "Ask any scout" routine doesn't work when the person you're trying to argue with has talked to scouts regarding the player. He's not a "first baseman square", he projects to be a corner outfielder by most.

I'm not posting this as a "I told you so" type thing, but to show you I'm not blowing hot air. The Brewers are playing him in left field.

And although there's no way he would start everyday at those positions, he could also play 3B and C. He doesn't have the footwork to do well as an everyday 3B, and he'd be poor defensively behind the plate, but he has a very good arm, and could fill in at those positions. He is in no way limited in his defensive positioning as you said.

Prior to the draft, he was projected to start in A, so I'd that's where he goes. I haven't talked to anybody since the draft though, so don't really know where the Brewers plan to put him. But I'd be suprised if he started in Rookie ball.

Good to hear

I'll be following him closely, I just hope he does better then how our other UF guys have done. Those late 90 teams were so exciting, but the players haven't done anything special really. I mean yeah, Wilkerson, Ellis, Ross, Fogg, ect. are starting and all, but they're nothing special, and Eck did win the WS MVP, but everybody recognizes that he's not a very skilled player.

So yeah, hopefully LaPorta will break the mold and have a real good career :)
