Arizona Diamondbacks Dynasty

dynastyheader.jpg

With the change of colour scheme for the Diamondbacks this year I thought why not mix up the whole league with a fantasy draft. I thought I would get at least a few games into the season before I started this thread. So with that in mind the first few series have no pictures, just the box scores.

Difficult - All Star

Fielding - Manual

Strike Zone - On

Hot/Cold Zones - Off

Pitch Cursor - Fade

Hitter's Eye - On

Rosters - UR 8.4 Standard

Sliders - My own Always under consideration

Pitcher Matchup

Carlos Zambrano (0-0, 0.00) vs. Scott Kazmir (0-0, 0.00)

DIAMONDBACKS HOLD OFF FAST FINISHING ROCKIES FOR A 6-4 WIN

Arizona quickly jumped out to a 4-nil lead thanks to Willingham, Nady & Pena, who then backed it up again in the 3 inning posting another 2 runs to give the Diamondbacks a 6-nil lead after 3.

Heading into the bottom of the 7th, The Rockies bats started to pick apart the tiring arm of Zambrano, who is normally comfortable pitching deep into a game. J.D. Drew blasted a solo-HR over the right field wall to score the Rockies first run of the game. Zambrano continued to tire and allowed a single to Andruw Jones, had David Ortiz caught at the wall by a spectacular catch by Carl Crawford in CF. Wes Helms stepped up to the plate and hit a double between left and center field which moved Jones over to third. With only 1-out Khalil Greene's sacrifice fly was enough to score Jones to make the score 6-2 after seven innings.

Still no sign of movement in the Diamondbacks bullpen in the bottom of the ninth, Drew manages to get on base with a blooper to left field. Andruw Jones then blasts a 2-run HR over the center field wall to bring the Rockies within 2.

Finally a call to the bullpen is made, with the closer Huston Street beginning to warm up with no outs in the 9th inning and David Ortiz at the plate. Zambrano begins to work on the outer edged of the plate and getting Ortiz to swing at pitches outside the strike zone. With a full count, Ortiz hits a fly ball deep to right field and is caught be Pena at the track.

Enough is enough for the Diamondbacks, with too many balls reaching deep into the outfield the manager calls for a mound visit to give Street just that little bit more time, after the meeting Zambrano is pulled for Street who closed it out allowing one hit.

Pitcher Matchup

Scott Olsen (0-0, 0.00) vs. Aaron Harang (0-0, 0.00)

HAMILTON'S CLUTCH DOUBLE GETS DIAMONDBACKS OVER THE LINE

The bottom of the first didn't begin well for Arizona with leadoff hitter Reed Johnson sent a hanging slider from Olsen over left field to give Colorado a 1-nil lead.

The real action occured in the final two innings however, with Pena smacking his second HR of the year to give Arizona a slim 3-2 lead. Setup man Joel Zumaya begins to warm up in the bullpen with that solo shot.

Zumaya obviously didn't warm up enough, plunking J.D. Drew to start off the 8th inning. He followed that up by getting Andruw Jones to strike out, then the unthinkable happened he surrendered the lead with Ortiz hitting his second HR of the game giving Colorado a 4-3 lead.

Arizona began the ninth in good fashion with Figgins getting on board with a single, then reaching third on Mauer's single to right field. In a surprise move. First Baseman, Chris Duncan who was 1-for-4 at the time was replaced by Josh Hamilton with lefty Mike Gonzalez on the mound. Hamilton hit a double to the center field wall scoring both Figgins and Mauer. Arizona once again regained the lead.

Huston Street was then called upon to close out the game, he did so with no trouble at all, striking out one and allowing no hits.

Pitcher Matchup

Zack Greinke (0-0, 0.00) vs. Mike Mussina (0-0, 0.00)

D-BACKS BULLPEN BLOWS GREINKE'S GEM, ROCKIES WIN IN 12

Greinke deserved the win by pitching 8 1/3 innings of 1 hit baseball allowing up only 1 run but Arizona's dismal effort out of the bullpen allowed Colorado to score 2 runs in the 9th to tie it at 2-all after 9 innings. Street allowed a two run shot by Reed Johnson to bring the scores level.

With the game headed for extra innings, Sean Marshall was given the nod to warm up which was a surprise he was scheduled to start in two days time.

Top of the 12th inning opened up with a bang. Xavier Nady hit a HR off Dave Williams. Josh Willingham made it back-to-back HR as Arizona move ahead 4-2, but couldn't extend the lead anymore...Bottom of the 12th, Arizona went through 3 pitchers to get the three outs, and still couldn't get it done. Meredith walked one and allowed two to score. With the scores level and two outs, Taylor Tankersley allowed the game winning run to cross the plate.

Pitcher Matchup

Fausto Carmona (0-0, 0.00) vs. Mark Redman (0-0, 0.00)

ARIZONA WIN IT IN THE 9TH

Top of the 3rd inning, Basic hitting and finding the caps worked for Arizona with second baseman B.J. Upton gets on board with a single. Moved along to second on Carmona's ground out at first. Carl Crawford hits a single to center. Upton holds at third with Juan Rivera's cannon ready to throw him out at home. Figgins knocks in Upton with an RBI-single Joe Mauer does the same to bring in Carl Crawford. Arizona leave the third inning with a 2-nil lead.

Top of the 9th inning, Scores are level at 2-all. Joe Mauer gets on base with a blooper to right. After catching the mammoth 12-inning game against Colorado the day before. Darren Ford is brought in as a pinch runner and Rene Rivera will take over behind the plate. Ford stole second base off Justin Duchschrerer. With a runner in scoring position Wily Mo Pena hit an outfield single driving in Ford from second base giving the lead to the Diamondbacks. Street was given the orders to warm up and "Shut the Damn Door This Time!!!"

Street made quick work of the bottom of the Nationals order. Closing out the game without allowing a hit.

Pitcher Matchup

Sean Marshall (0-0, 0.00) vs. Glen Perkins (0-0, 0.00)

NATIONALS COME BACK TO WIN, D-BACKS HAVE BULLPEN ISSUES

With a lead of 2-1 heading into the 8th inning. Joel Zumaya was handed the ball after Marshall allowed 5 hits and 1 run while striking out 4 in his 7 innings. He allowed the game-tying run.

Arizona's long relief Gio Gonzalez began to warm-up with the game expected to go into extra innings and entered the game in the ninth inning. First, Jason Bartlett hits a double to left center field. Gonzalez then walked Todd Helton with some of his pitches not quite finding the catchers target. Dunn hit a grounder to Gonzalez at short which held Bartlett at second and recorded the first out of the ninth inning. Juan Rivera stepped up and hit a RBI-double down the right field line giving Washington a 3-2 victory.

Pitcher Matchup

Carlos Zambrano (0-0, 4.32) vs. Roy Halladay (0-0, 4.91)

RECENT BULLPEN TROUBLES FORCE ZAMBRANO TO GIVE UP LATE RUNS

The heart of Washington's order quickly put 3 runs on the board by just hitting the gaps early in the first inning. Joe Mauer knocked in Carl Crawford after he hit his first triple of the year and Wily Mo Pena brough Joe Mauer in to reduce the deficit to one in the 4th inning.

Zambrano gave another run in the 7th, which extended the lead to two. Alex Gonzalez, a stellar defensive shortstop hitting .111 against the Nationals heading into the 9th was pulled in favour of Robb Quinlan who moved into the 3rd base, Chone Figgins moved over to 2nd. Josh Willingham left the game as Anderson Hernandez took over at shortstop and Josh Hamilton the hero of the game against the Rockies earlier in the season was brought in with 1-out in the 9th and hit a 2-run HR which just cleared the right field wall.

Middle of the 9th, scores are level at 4-all. Zambrano took the mound. I just had no confidence in the bullpen. Replacement shortstop Brandon Wood was first up, perhaps Carlos was thinking about the middle of the order and how he was going to retire the trio of Helton, Dunn and Rivera left a splitter up in the zone and watched it sail over the left-center wall for the game winning home run.

Pitcher Matchup

Scott Olsen (1-0, 3.00) vs. Mark Buehrle (0-1, 3.68)

WILLINGHAM'S 3 DINGERS ENOUGH FOR VICTORY

Josh Willingham and Wily Mo Pena must have had a mini-game on who could hit the most home runs in the game. Well, Willingham won that 3-2. Both of them hit solo shots to lead off the second inning.

Willingham then made it 2 from 2 when he cleared the wall and brought in himself and first baseman Xavier Nady. Unfortunately Pena was unable to match it.

Once again the duo hit solo shots off Buehrle to begin the 6th inning. Arizona leading 6-nil after 6 innings. With that kind of lead the bullpen was called with Cla Meredith coming in. Bartlett hit a single to get on base, Helton grounded into a double play. Relaxed to get the first two outs of the inning Meredith left a sinker in the middle of the zone for Adam Dunn to crush it over right field to get the Nationals off the mark. Memories of the past few games begin to flood in. Meredith held his nerve and got Rivera to ground out.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth and a 5-run lead. The Diamondbacks gave the ball to Joel Zumaya, hoping to give him some confidence. Zumaya gave up a single to pinch-hitter Carl Everett to begin the inning. David Wright made first base on a fielding error by Diamondbacks 3B Chone Figgins. Runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs. Zumaya forced retired Bartlett and Helton on fly balls. Dunn singled to load the bases for Juan Rivera. Rivera only managed to bring in Everett to make the score 6-2. Still the bases are loaded for Ryan Church, who grounded out to Alex Gonzalez at shortstop to give the Diamondbacks bullpen much needed confidence.

Pitcher Matchup

Jered Weaver (0-0, 7.20) vs. Zack Greinke (0-0, 1.08)

WILY MO HITS 3 HR's, DRIVES IN FIVE.

The first of Pena's home runs came early. A two-out shot with Mauer and Duncan on board as Arizona jump out to a 3-nil lead after one inning.

Reds first baseman, Derrek Lee closed the gap to one with a HR bringing in Jimmy Rollins as well.

Pena's second home was a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning, unfortunately the remainder of the lineup could not build on the lead. Score after four innings, 4-2 Arizona.

Once again the duet of Pena and Willingham played to the tune of back-to back dingers in the bottom of the 6th. Boosting the D-Backs lead to four. Arizona lead 6-2 after six.

Gio Gonzalez was given the task to finish off the final two innings with the lead at four. He did so allowing one hit - a Jimmy Rollins single in the 8th.

AREAS OF CONCERN FOR ARIZONA

- Left handed slugger Chris Duncan hitting .176 with 0 HR and 0 RBI.

- Chone Figgins has committed 6 errors at third base in 8 games.

D-BACKS LOSE IN 15

With scores tied at 3-all after nine innings. They headed into extra innings. Gio Gonzalez was given the ball heading into the 12th inning. He allowed a run on a Richard Hidalgo double. Cincinnati begins to warmup closer Ryan Dempster.

Anderson Hernandez, who subbed in for B.J. Upton at second base had runners at first and second with two outs in the 12th inning hit a double off the center field wall to drive in the tying run to keep the game alive.

Top of the 15th, Jimmy Rollins hit a single to left field off Gonzalez. Followed up by a two-run shot by second baseman Jeff Kent giving the Reds a lead 6-4. All the Diamondbacks could muster was one run from Figgins off a Mauer double. However it was not enough, Cincinnati wins 6-5.

Nice dynasty, but what about some game pictures?

I thought I'd get into the dynasty a bit to make sure that I was interested in it. Game pictures will be starting from my home series against Los Angeles (April 16).

Thanks for the comment.

Pitcher Matchup

Jarrod Washburn (0-0, 2.35) vs. Sean Marshall (0-0, 1.04)

D-BACKS BELT 5 HOME RUNS, WIN 7-0

Bottom of the second, Wily Mo Pena led off with a double. Followed up by a two-run shot by First baseman Xavier Nady. Arizona jump out to a 2-nil lead.

The lead was stretched to three when catcher Joe Mauer hit his second home run of the season.

Xavier Nady hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot in the sixth inning off lefty Jarrod Washburn

Jarrod Washburn was having trouble locating his pitches effectively and was in serious trouble early on allowing 4 runs in six innings. Marshall on the other hand scattered seven hits in as many innings enroute to his first victory of the year.

Bottom of the eighth inning, Josh Willingham hit his 9th home run of the season, driving in 3 to put the final nail in the coffin of the Reds. Diamondbacks win 7-0

John Patterson (0-0, 7.20) vs. Carlos Zambrano (1-1, 4.96)

PATTERSON THROWS COMPLETE GAME SHUT OUT

Seven singles is all the Diamondbacks could do against John Patterson while Colorado managed 11 hits and drove in 3 runs. J.D. Drew was the chief destroyer going 2-for-3, a walk, a double and a home run - his 5th for the season.

Figgins again showed he is a double-edged sword over a third base, he committed his seventh error (his fielding percent has dropped to .893) and also had two hits in the game, but couldn't get home in this game.

It took Chris Duncan 10 games to get his first RBI of the season, but he was able to improve his misely .179 batting average upto a semi-respectible .250 by going 3-for-4 and driving in Chone Figgins on a single in the 7th inning.

In the first inning, Wily Mo Pena drove in his 15th run of the season bringing in Joe Mauer and a single to give Arizona a 1-nil lead.

Obviously, you can see that the dynasty thread died all of a sudden. Which is a common problem but mine was due to laziness of making the recaps, trying to get good snapshots to include in the report.

I am now truly appreciative off all dynasties that are shared on here (especially the ones that amass thousands of views and endless pages of replies)

The dynasty is still going, its just more of a private dynasty instead.

I just completed my 107th game of the year (a record for all played games for me)

I'm currently sitting on 70-37, first place in the National League West Division.

Transaction History

5/15 - Traded 1B Chris Duncan, LHP Gio Gonzalez & RHP Cla Meredith to Los Angeles Angels for 1B Travis Hafner, LHP Mark Pawelek & RHP Kevin Gregg

5/18 - Traded LHP Mark Pawelek to Philadelphia Phillies for LHP Scott Elbert

7/8 - Traded RHP Joel Zumaya to Texas Rangers for LHP Jeremy Sowers
