Feedback on new layout

Here's my latest project...I'm kinda keeping it quiet right now but I know I can always rely on my friends from MVPmods ;)

Critique the following layout for my new site gallery and I'll make you a sig if you'd like...name the player (not players, player) and team (since my baseball knowledge is a little rusty) and I'll see what I can do. :D

Layout: http://www.blogofdan.com/images/showcase.jpg

Thanks guys!

I *really* like the neon sign, and then "graffiti" and "posters" on a brick wall motif. I mean I like it A LOT.

The only suggestions I might have is to make the "grafitti" a little less uniform, as in, make it look a LITTLE more like spray-paint on a wall, and maybe make the placement of the "posters" less uniform. So it looks more like posters slapped onto a wall.

BUT - that last part might not be possible... either way... I "get" the motif, and I love it.

EDIT: Oh, and if you wanted to make me a sig (even tho I often make my own)... I have to say I LOVE the work you do... I'd either like a Pujols (STL) sig... or I'd actually like more a "fantasy" sig of Mark Buehrle as a cards pitcher... so just kind of plaster him into looking like he's pitching as a cardinal w/ the text "A guy can dream, can't he?" might be nice. :)

Thanks for the quick feedback guys. Geolink2349, it's a Website Showcase. :p

POSTERS! RaptorQuiz, that might be a better idea than my current "shelves". I'll have to try something different...thanks man ;)

Bed now, sigs tomorrow. Night all.

Cool! Glad I could offer up a good idea! I'd love to see a weathered effect if you go w/ "posters." :)

Eh, posters look a little too plain and there isn't as much depth. Thanks for the feedback though, bro. I'll keep working on it. I'm extremely interested as to how I'll code this...sounds like a big project to me. :D

I plan to use JavaScript to have the neon sign at the top flicker...hmm..

I think the neon sign looks a little too fuzzy and like said before, the top graffiti doesn't really blend, I think it should be like the graffiti on the bottom(you know, the stuff that says by dan the man).

And if you are willing to make me a sig, I would love to have something of Justin Verlander saying something cool about the no-hitter and if you could, fit the date in somehow(June 12th:6/12/07). Thank you if you do.

At most of the gallery sites that I frequent, there's usually some sort of statement of why you're featuring the sites, like standards-based design, good use of Flash, CSS, AJAX, Wordpress themes, or what have you. Basically, why do you think these sites are worth featuring, and what sorts of sites would you like to see in the future?

I'm torn on the nav links. I don't think they should be drippy, like the poster above me suggests, because legibility and usability should be most important. Perhaps you could put them over the brick background and use "multiply" to bring the brick texture up, then use a script to do an onhover to make them blue when you hover above them. Does that make sense? If not, let me know.

The other suggestion I might make involves making the neon sign a little more 3D. I used to be good at making neon signs, but I can't for the life of me remember how to now. Lemme give this a try:

[flash width=650 height=100]http://www.spy-o-rama.com/yurigagarins/neonyuri.swf

It's a good thought for a design, and you've pulled it off well. Maybe a more identifiable name too? Something tying into the urban design you've created?

Haven't forgotten you, Tigers94. I'll get there eventually ;)

Thank you AstroEric. Of course it's not a final layout so I'll definitely be tweaking for a while yet, but I appreciate your suggestions nevertheless. With the help of Javascript the sign at the top will flicker, don't worry. Not blinking, cause that's annoying and I don't like annoying things. I'll work on depth and lighting and all that.

I hate to give it an "urbz"-related name, only cause then it might sound like an urban showcase site to some and that's not what it is.

I'd still like to put more text on the page so any ideas as to how to style it is awesome. I'll also try to get those links looking more realistic.

Thanks again for the suggestions..happy Apple Day all. :p

I like the idea of the shelves/display case. But, I do agree with what was said earlier about the empty space at the bottom, and that the graffiti there looks a bit out of place, with only one splotch. Overall this thing is absolutely amazing!

It's extremely hard to make the graffiti blend - the bricks are so dark that it looks horrible on any transparency/blending level.

Of course that empty spot at the bottom isn't permanent! WIP, people! :p

Cool, it'll be great to see the final version!

I honestly don't get an "urban" vibe from this. To me, it feels more like a comedy club or small-venue musician's stage.

If you wanted to go that route, you could put a microphone on the left side and an upended stool on the right, maybe a couple water bottles.

Another nice touch (in my opinion, anyway) would be using individual spotlights above each thumbnail, kind of like what an art gallery uses over paintings. That would really give it a "showcase" feel, making them look sort of like playbills.

And aside from adding the flicker, the neon sign is perfect.

Oh, before I forget, no sig needed...I like making my own, lol.

I also thought when i first saw this that it looked like a comedy club. Those are also some great ideas.

I need to make it more of a showcase-type thing. Show me a comedy club somewhere where you could possibly showcase items (not talent). I don't know.

I think they're getting that feeling, and I am too, because it's kind of an urban, outside feel, yet it looks like its inside at the same time... and comedy clubs often look like that

Well, a small musician's venue would showcase autographed memorabilia, such as drumsticks, guitars, etc.

Some comedy clubs also have a similar setup for dvd's, cd's, and books.

Why not call it something like Open Mic Showcase? Because what's really praiseworthy isn't the pages themselves, but the creators behind them?
