iPhone, anyone?

Dan

I'm just wondering - did anyone here get an iPhone? I was in line mid-afternoon on iDay and got mine at the local at&t store. It's an amazing device - anyone else with one here?

EDIT: Sorry if this should be in Left Field; Tech Talk first jumped out at me.

I have a job, KC. Made a deal with my parents that if I had enough money in a certain account and enough monthly income to pay the plan I could get one.

Apparently the EDGE network's speed was noticeably boosted a day or two ago (approx. 264 kbit/s) - seems fast enough for me.

Yeah, personally I think the thing is gonna be a flop. Sure, the iPhone is amazing, and everyone wants one, but its starting at what, $499? Of course, since its Apple, people will buy them, but not up to the levels that its hyped up to be. At least with the iPod there is a little versatility in price range.

By the way, I've lost my cellphone a couple times over the years, but losing an iPhone....?!?! Uh-oh.

With the cheapest plan & phone possible the iPhone will cost you $2,000 in the 1st year (at least here in Cincinnati)

That is just too damn much, I got the Fusic which will cost $420 in all the 1st year.

It plays MP3s so no need to install crapTunes on my PC, I can get pitch by pitch baseball coverage, and it comes with a built in FM transmitter for they car

I'm really in it for the $299-$349ish widescreen iPod inside and the "real" mobile internet. The phone part is nice, believe me, but it's not the main function I use it for.

Just another overpriced piece of crap from Apple. For a company that hasn't created a functional product since the Apple ][e, I would expect nothing else.

But hey, if you want a $500-$600 phone (that's with a mandatory 2 year contract, by the way) that can't handle bluetooth, instant messaging, GPS, additional memory cards, mp3 ringtones, Flash or Java, and has a comically worthless keyboard, knock yourself out. Me, I'd rather get paid $150 for a blackberry pearl that has all of those missing features and is half as deep.

IMO to me, if you already have an iPod that makes half of the iPhones features obsolete and a majority of people own an iPod, rich or poor.

And I'm not trying to diss the iPhone at all. I think it is and appears to be a good phone. I know people who will buy it just because it is the latest and greatest and to me it is the Bently of phones (making it a further must have) But as long as there's something close to it for cheaper (which a friend of mine did with the BlackJack from Cingular and eventually I will myself with Sprint within the next year or two) then this will just be something I will adore from afar.

Alright, so maybe I did spoil myself a bit. But after seeing iPhone demos online and then testing out a Treo (which I was originally going to get iDay eve), I couldn't take a step back.

It's still a great piece of electronics, but it's not groundbreaking nor is it perfect. First generation Apple products always have their bugs. Personally, I've always wanted a Sidekick, but I have Cingular. I'm happy with my cheap free phone, just because the cheapest phones seem like they're the most durable.

Same here, Spungo. I only got my first cellphone a few months ago, after many years of refusing to cave in. I went with the KRZR, because it was free with my wife's cellphone plan and played music.

Do you guys have any clue what I am stuck with after the entire fiasco with the i930 I had a year ago?

That's right. This sucker. No LED screen in the front or anything. Hell, there isn't even a color screen on this phone. It's singlehandedly the greatest phone I have ever had. Aside from it's incredibly poor battery life, it has survived many falls and many tosses and misfortunes. I love my rugged phone and I will always want a rugged phone when I switch providers in the near future.

I was never a fan of the whole pocket PC thing because I usually use my cell phone to make phone calls with people and to use my DC function (walkie-talkie) in the event I need a quick favor done or if it's a quick suggestion, and any function I would want to use at any given moment in time, I have seperate devices that do the jobs I want (music, photos, videos) far better than a combined device.

Best of luck with your new phone Dan. If this is what you wanted and you saved up for it yourself, I think it's great. The way you design websites for people you will be able to buy a lot more things for yourself in the future I can promise you that.

That right there is not bad and it sure beats the hell out of what I have.

Alright I'm sorry if I sound a bit spoiled, guys. I'm telling you, though, I was mainly in it for the iPod part - which means that the rest of the device was $200ish minus the plan. It sounded like an OK deal to me, anyway..

Kraw in quotes:

"With the cheapest plan & phone possible the iPhone will cost you $2,000 in the 1st year (at least here in Cincinnati)"

I think you meant for 2 years.

"That is just too damn much, I got the Fusic which will cost $420 in all the 1st year."

Nice phone but has weak bass on the music, from what I hear.

"It plays MP3s so no need to install crapTunes on my PC, I can get pitch by pitch baseball coverage, and it comes with a built in FM transmitter for they car"

The FM transmitter is a cool feature. How are you getting pitch by pitch baseball coverage on FM? I get it on XM for all teams but only local teams on AM.

I have been watching all the Iphone hype for a long time now for investment purposes. Made some good money in Apple the last few years.

It seems to be a solid purchase if you need a new Ipod and phone, but the internet is very cool too. I hear AT&T just gave their network for the Iphone a bump in speed the last few days.

I never text message anyways, so the keyboard doesnt bother me, but I like having a "true internet" on the go. I dont have a laptop.

From what I have read, the cheapest Iphone service plan is $60 a month, so that would equate to $720 a year plus the cost of the phone. I think that is only 450 call minutes though. For about 900 minutes it will cost $80 a month, so $960 a year. That includes unlimited data/internet. That's not too shabby if you use the internet on the go. 2 yr minimum contract though.

My biggest concern is using the ATT network in Southern California. I have family/friends who have had Cingular for a few years and they always have dropped calls and weak service. I have had Sprint for 3 years and have great service in SoCal.

Blackberry's and Iphones are two completely different categories. You can own RIMM and AAPL stock and do quite well. Blackberry is for business, while Iphone is for the average consumer. They dont compete head to head, at least not yet.

After messing around with my friend's iPhone, I had an epiphany.

This whole hype for this phone is stupid.

Apple will never be able to replicate the success of the iPod. You know why? Because the iPod came at a time when MP3 players were still fairly young and had a shitload of room for improvement, especially in terms of user friendliness for Average Joe.

iPod delivered something for everyone; hardcore techies got a powerful and very hackable platform to tinker with, and Joe Public got something he could use on his morning jog/workout, something so easy a caveman could do it; just plug it in and go.

The iPhone, however, comes after a generation of very successful "smart phones". Blackberry, Sidekick, Nokia n95, etc. Steve Jobs just showed up late to the game, but thinks that he can join because he has a shinier, newer ball than all the other kids.

Kcitystar,

You are comparing apples to oranges. Like I stated above, the Blackberry's of the world are in their own category. Wall Street doesnt have these smart phones competing against the Iphone. Wall Street separates the smart phones into the business category, with the Iphone as a consumer product. In other words, they can both co-exist and be very successful. The smart phones are not Job's target market, at least not yet. Think of this Iphone release as a demonstration of what is to come in terms of interactivity and ease of use. The biggest knock is the keyboard and the lack of tactile feedback and the keys being too close and small. Time will tell if Apple has a better solution. Texting wasnt as high on their priority list as other things. But people do adjust to these things and from some of the reviews I have read, the keyboard is not a dealbreaker and you do get used to it rather quickly. Using it in the horizontal mode, should make it easier to use too.

The loser in all this is Palm. It is losing market share and needs a new, widely accepted offering.

By the way, the Ipod wasnt a hit right off the bat. There were alot of naysayers at the time. It was very expensive and had some issues with the first version. Hmmm, sounds kinda familar, doesnt it.

My wife looked at the iphone for use at work and then we both realized it's a device for kids and young adults, not working professionals. She'll go with the treo and I will stick moto flip phone.

I think the iphone is a neat piece of electronics, but it is built for a specifi demographic.

I do have to disagree that Apple hasn't had a good device since the IIe... the new iMacs are amazing. We had them at my old job and they were wonderous.

I greatly disagree with blackberries not being meant for everyday use. I have the Pearl, and it's been wonderful. Fast internet, mp3, games, apps, along with IM and texting. I don't see that much of a difference between the iphone and the pearl, other than a $650 difference for another 2 GB of storage, and a lot of missing features I use every day.
