rambo
Tampa's finest.Rays win another in extras. Another high-profile closer, another extra-inning game winning homerun. This is becoming a routine occurance as the Rays pulled out another clutch win, 2-1 in Minnesota. This time, it was Matthew Polites who put one out off of Joe Nathan in the 12th inning to give the Rays their 4th victory of the season. The other two runs came off of solo shots, the Twins came from Justin Morneau, and the Rays were represented by Ronnie Reyes. For the Rays, a loss would have certaintly left them ruing missed chances. They squandered several run scoring opportunities in the first nine innings. It was a particularly rough night for designated hitter Michael Sandoval, who struck out with the bases loaded in the 6th and grounded out with 2 runners on in the 8th. Starter Jason Blizzard pitched extremely well in a total reversal of his first start allowing only 1 run on 3 hits in 8 and 2/3 innings. Rays fans held their breath as Scott Moore was called upon to get the final out in the 9th, he allowed a single to Joe Mauer before inducing a fly ball from Michael Cuddyer to end the 9th. He pitched a scoreless 10th, Benjamin DeCoste extended his scoreless streak with a perfect 11th and Mike Philsphan remained perfect in his 2 save opportunities this season retiring the side on 6 pitches for the victory. rambo
Walk-off blast caps Twins late rally. Torii Hunter hit a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the 9th as the Twins scored 4 runs in the final 3 innings to win 4-3. The Rays jumped out infront early with solo home runs to Chris Kelvarr in the 5th and Matthew Polites in the 6th for a 2-0 lead. Adam Pridham was looking solid through the first 6 and he only showed signs of shakiness when Michael Cuddyer took him out in the 7th to cut the lead to 2-1 until a Michael Haylock RBI single got the run right back in the 8th. On a high chopper to the pitcher's mound to lead off the 8th, Pridham bobbled the ball and recovered only to make a wild throw to put a man on. Struggling to maintain his composure he then served up a hanging fastball to Jason Bartlett who promptly deposited it in the seats to tie the game. Scott Moore entered, and shut it down in the 8th and pitched one out in the 9th. Lefty Frank Duffy came in, retired Morneau, but Hunter hit a 2-out walk off shot to give the Twins an unlikely win. rambo
Back-to-back-to-back blasts not enough as Twins pull out another come from behind victory. Tampa jumped on Ramon Ortiz early today with Johnluke Chaparro, Ronnie Reyes and Dave Pudge going yard in consecutive at bats to give the Rays a 3-0 lead and to back starter Lucas Williams. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau rallied the troops with solo shots in the 4th to make it 3-2. Williams got back on track and continued to pitch well until he allowed a single to Jason Bartlett to lead off the 8th. Setup Man Scott Moore came in on the back of two strong outings full of confidence but his 0-2 pitch to Nick Punto was taken to the opposite field for a 2-run homer to give the Twins the lead. After a Joe Mauer flyout, he surrendered another long ball to Michael Cuddyer to give the Twins an insurance run and the 5-3 lead. Dave Pudge walked with one out against Joe Nathan, but pinch-hitter Chris Kelvarr grounded into a double play to end the ballgame. rambo
Drogalis, Sandoval lead Rays to series split with Minnesota. Michael Sandoval finally got locked in, and Mike Drogalis pitched another excellent game as the Rays earned the split 2-0 over Minnesota in the series finale. Sandoval, the designated hitter, belted Minnesota starter Boof Bonser for homers in his first two at-bats making him the first Rays player to achieve the feat this season. The first individual multi-homer game was all Drogalis needed as he made light work of Minnesota's powerhouse lineup, pitching a 3 hit complete game shutout.
