Maakala
Well last Thursday I tried to get on my computer and was for the first time unable to. It came to the screen listing options for starting because it had apparently not started properly the last time someone had turned it on. I choose start normally and it just got to the XP loading screen and restarted and went to the startup options screen again. I tried all the safe mode options and the last known configuration that worked and all the other stuff and it keeps restarting and restarting coming back to this screen every time. I was not the last person on the computer, so I asked my brother what he did and he said he just turned off the computer because when he was shutting down it wanted to install automatic updates and he didn't have want to wait. Since then it hasn't been able to go into safe mode or start regularly. I came across this one error message the one time i tried starting it up and it said "registry cannot load the hive (file): systemrootsystem32configsoftware it is corrupt, absent or not writable. Does anyone have any ideas on what is wrong and how I can fix it? This is the first time I've had any problems with this computer, so it's all kind of new. Thanks for the help! phxsuns
I had that exact problem a couple weeks ago. Finally I took it in and the computer guy said it would cost more than a new computer to fix so he just burned DVD's of all the files and I got a new windows vista which I am liking. But, best of luck trying to fix the problem.

There are many things you could try to isolate that issue, but even at the worst, you would just reinstall your OS on the HDD and it would be fine. However, you could try a repair on the OS, run some diagnostics on the HDD to make sure it wasn't damaged by the forced shutdown (punch your brother as well ), or, if you have a backup of your registry, which you probably don't, you could try reimporting the registry keys. seanzarelli
I had the same problem Maakala and I went through everything you said you did, and finally had to reformat my HD which fixed everything, but of course, lost all of my files. It was caused from an improper turning off because I left it on overnight as I was downloading some things and during the middle of the night it stormed for about 15 mins causing a power surge and causing the CPU to shut off. maxbjr
When your brother shut off your computor while it was updating, it corrupted some basic windows files, since they didn't get completely installed. if you're lucky you can try starting in safe mode and then transfer all your files to a backup hard drive. then you'll need to reinstall windows as a new install. reformatting your old install, thus wiping all of your data. if you actually know how to fix the computor's DLL's and REG KEY EDIT, you could go into DOS mode and fix the corrupted files yourself. NOTE, 1) this takes alot of time,(days if not a week or two), since you'll have to go line by line to find and fix problems, 2) you really have to know what you're doing in the REG KEY EDIT files or you'll mess up an entry and kill your computor, 3) if you have someone else do it for you, (a store or other computor repair place), you'll end up spending more money then the computor will ever be worth. I think my problem was way beyond repair this had been going on for a couple months, with sometimes it working and then it finally went into that cycle of restarting over and over. I had no problem to get rid of it and get a new one.
MarkB
Well, if all the hardware was OK, all it would have required is a complete format and reinstall. That would erase any problems (and everything else, in fact), and reinstall the standard OS on your HDD.
IronicMan
Always create a backup image for your files and put it in an external drive, or at least create a partition or two so you won't end up with this huge mess.
superciuc
There's one thing that you can do: kick your brother's *** all over your house.
Guildster
For a hassle free outcome, take my advice and do a reformat and clean install of your operating system on the hard drive. You will be glad you did and you will learn some valuable computer know-how in the process. You are probably going to lose your current files (lesson learned). Be sure to reinstall all Windows updates when finished.
