sully04
well Potter is argueable. This is the spoiler thread so no fear of offending anyone. I mean he technically could have died. Because of the situation that was set up he had his choice. He walked to his death and accepted it, but was afforded the chance to return. That was interesting. AstroEric
I think he technically died, but had two souls, because of serving as a Voldecrux? I dunno, I wasn't totally paying attention during that part.
Pudge77
How does Voldemort die?
Royal Blues
Key players throughout the series that died in Deathly Hallows (yes I know some have been mentioned already, just wanted to post a full list, to the best of my memory): Mad-Eye Moody Scrimgoeur Wormtail Dobby Fred Lupin Tonks Snape Collin Creevey Bellatrix Lestrange Voldemort ...and as Eric said, technically Harry Voldemort dies from another backfired Avada Kedavra curse...this time it was due to a combination of his using the wand that was not meant for him and an Expelliarmus (sp?) charm from Harry. The two that choked me up the most were Dobby and Fred. For a full year before the book came out, I was sure Percy was going to come to his senses and make the sacrifice to save his family. I guess half-right isn't all bad. Like many others, I thought Snape's death felt rushed. For such a major player, he barely had any face time. On the other hand, it wasn't called Severus Snape and the Deathly Hallows. With everything that was already happening in the book, it would have to have been 100 pages longer (which I would have had absolutely no problem with) to satisfy my wishes to read more on Snape. Truly tragic character. One of my favorite lesser plot threads was the "redemption" of Kreacher. It wasn't exactly a redemption per se. It was more along the lines of him getting the treatment and respect he needed. I also really liked how the patronuses (patroni?) played out in this book. Sean O
Yeah, the speaking Patronus thing is pretty cool. And, I was unaware they could last indefinitely, as Umbridge's did during the Muggle trials. The Kreacher subplot, which I'd largely forgotten in the few days since I've finished the book, is one of the better written parts of the books. In book 5, Kreacher is a loathesome little twerp, and a dangerous presence, to the point where you can't help but hate him. In the end, Harry is able to transcend Sirius' baser instincts by making him feel welcome, wherein Kreacher shows another side. As I mentioned in the previous thread, the relationship between Harry and Dumbledore mirrors that of Alyosha and Zosima in Brothers Karamazov. Both Alyosha and Harry have a fundamental faith in their mentor, which is shaken by posthumous allegations with a questionable basis in fact. Harry, continually searching for absolute truths, finds his belief system under attack when questions about Dumbledore's past come to light, while Alyosha's faith in Zosima is directly tied into the greater faith; Alyosha finds himself questioning his commitment to being a monk. Both novices have taken on a suitable paternal figure to replace their true father, which are in both cases absent from the upbringing of the child. Both use the faith in the father figure to attain the higher level to which they aspire, and this is why the post-death aspersions cause such grief in the characters. In the end, of course, both realize that the gifts provided to them by their teachers are what was valuable, rather than believing either was perfect from the start. Similarly, the middle section of HP7 reminded me of Anna Karenina because it depicted the solitary struggles to achieve your goals, and also because it sucked. AstroEric
I agree on the sucking part. I need to re-read Karamazov. All I keep thinking of is Kafka's Trial. Know what would have made this book better? Cut the number of Horcruxes they had to find. Skip all that sitting around in tents being moody. Skip all the "what a wonderful coincidence" things like the light-grabber being a teleporter. Have them get to Hogwarts earlier to witness firsthand the rule of Snape. Don't kill both Tonks and Lupin, which struck me as a way of making another orphan for a second series of Rowling-penned books. Kill Percy instead of Fred, which would seem a more complete tale for the Weasleys. Drop the "Nineteen Years Later" chapter. Too much schmaltz. Albus Severus Potter? Poor kid. --Eric
kinghernandez
haha I called a few friends and gave them a fake ending before they could hang up. They were pretty pissed. sully04
It honestly doesn't bother me much when people shout fake endings. The people who shout that sort of thing obviously have no respect for the people trying to read the book, so i tend to doubt that they've actually read enough of it to spoil it for me. I will get upset if someone tells me the actual events or ending of the book however.

How does not having a sense of humor help anyone out? Because I'm sure that's what kinghernandez was doing. It was most likely meant as a joke so chill out. Poor kid. --Eric Just finished the book .. low and behold, my opinion was already posted by Eric. :yeah: -Cut the number of Horcruxes they had to find. Skip all that sitting around in tents being moody. Skip all the "what a wonderful coincidence" things like the light-grabber being a teleporter. This was the draggy points of the book. Basically the middle 300 pages. lol ========================================== -Have them get to Hogwarts earlier to witness firsthand the rule of Snape. I would have really liked to see this. Having Neville sum it all up in the tunnel to the room of requirement felt rushed and didn't hit as hard as it should have. Definitely needed a chapter or two on the darkly operated Hogwartz. I think Rowling didn't do this so she could keep Snape's true identity under suspicion. If it was displayed in detail that Snape promoted torturing students among other horrible things it would tough to see him in his ultimate role as a series hero. Would have also like to see how Ginny, Neville and Luna handled it all. They didn't get enough face time in the book for my taste. Probably the biggest disappointment in the book for me (not hearing more about Hogwartz). ========================================== -Don't kill both Tonks and Lupin, which struck me as a way of making another orphan for a second series of Rowling-penned books. That really felt unnecessary. Mainly because they just turned up dead and there was nothing behind it. Kind of like.. 'oh, by the way, Lupin and Tonks are dead'. It does sound fishy that they made a new orphan but the Hogwartz story has been told. To tell it again with a new version of Harry Potter would be redundant. ========================================== -Kill Percy instead of Fred, which would seem a more complete tale for the Weasleys. Definitely! Percy needed to be killed in a atoning, redeeming sort of way. Maybe saving Fred and George's life in some aspect. I really didn't like Fred dying and how they skimmed over the Weasley's mourning. The Weaslys definitely needed more attention in the end of the book. ========================================== Drop the "Nineteen Years Later" chapter. Too much schmaltz. Albus Severus Potter? Poor kid. What a bunch of gobilty-gook. haha More of the aftermath and events after the fall of Voldemort needed to be explained. Would have liked to see an entire chapter devoted to this. Rowling basically summed that all up in about a page then jumped right to the 19 years later. Could have been done better.
kinghernandez
Yeah chill guys, I obviously have no respect for the people reading it cause that's what I was going for. If I didn't I would have told them the real ending. "I hope you die in a fire." Okay, thanks Sean. I hope you live a happy and enjoyable life. Learn to take a damn joke, it's a ******* book. abc006
I thought it was very good, definitely wasn't disappointing. However, I agree that I wish they would be doing more in general throughout the book than moping around in a tent being grumpy towards each other. Hogwarts really makes the book not only exciting but especially engaging, and it wasn't in it as much as I'd like. And I think the general consensus is that the epilogue wasn't really necessary - We didn't really need to know about his kids and everything. For the realism in the series - the mortality of everyone (how many characters die in the whole series? Must be about 20, if not more), the feelings and grumpiness (one realistic thing I wouldn't mind cutting down on), the realistic personalities... yet everyone marries their high school sweetheart and you name your kids after your parents? Or, better yet, Albus Severus? One thing I'd like to know is how J.K. Rowling decided which Weasley twin would lose the ear, and which would die. I bet she picked names out of a hat or something...
