Or at least one of the few places i think i can get help anyway. My PC started acting strange a bit ago. If i plug in ANY storage device in the USB ports (jump drive, mp3 player etc) the whole computer locks up. These devices work on other computers. It just started a week ago. Any trouble shooting ideas? I don't know everything about computers but can feel my way around a bit. I am running xp sp2 if that helps.

Thanks

Right click on 'My Computer'.

Select 'Properties' and then 'Hardware'.

Click on 'Device Manager'.

At the bottom there should be a category that says 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' or USB.

Click the plus sign next to that and you will see all your USB hardware.

Is there anything there that has a warning or error icon? It would be a yellow circle with a question mark.

If everything looks OK, try disabling and enabling some of the USB devices. If none of this works, let me know and I'll have something else for you to try.

Another possibility is that your USB controller is not getting enough power from the power supply. Do you have any other peripherals attached?
no nothing else attached to the pc. All of the USB devices show a usb symbol, no problems that I can find there. I will try disabling some of them just to see what happens.I do have three instances of SiS 7001 PCI to USB open host controller and 4 USB root hub's listed Is that normal or should i shut some of those down?

i think he was referring to changes to the hardware or even new software. i had a similar problem with a past pc. i had just switched to xp because he supposedly didn't freeze like previous windows versions. well after adding on an extra hd and dvd burner, a printer, and a few more usb ports full of external hds here and there, the computer started to freeze. so i was like, wtf...but turned out i just needed a better power supply to handle all the new stuff. so i think me be asking about that. when it happened to me, everything froze. couldn't move the mouse, nothing. it was just like a still picture.

SiS? There's your problem. The SiS USB controller has issues sometimes. Try visiting the SiS site or trying the utilities at http://www.usbman.com/Drivers%20and%20Patches.htm#SiS .

Use whichever one has the driver signature that is most current. I don't have any SiS products so I can't try them out and tell you which one works. You'll just have to do some "trial and error" and rollback the drivers if necessary.
