Hard drive problem.

Every time I boot up my PC I get "drive 0 seek Failure, time to run some hard drive diagnostics, and backup your important data" then it starts up fine, runs a little sluggish though, then I run some diagnostic test like chkdsk and it says that something is corrupt then restarts, I also tried some third party software and get the same result. Then, when Windows boots up I get a pop up saying that the stuff in the application data folder is missing or corrupt. Does this mean my drive is dead? Any suggestions?

Sure sounds like it, yeah. You might be able to reinstall the files that are missing from your OS CD, but it's a temprary solution, at best. If you have another system you can use and can't boot at all from this one, try this drive in the spare system and set it up as a slave to copy your data.

Crap, that's what I figured. This is the only system I got, I guess I won't be shutting this PC off for a while.
It could just be a bad sector/partition. If you have your hard drive partitioned or if you have some extra space on your HD, set up another Windows installation and move some important files over to that install. Chances are the whole drive is bad but this might buy you some time.

You mentioned you ran chkdsk - which one? It might be worth trying chkdsk /r to see if it can repair the bad sectors, or at least mark them not be to be read from or written to.

Yea that's what I did, chkdsk /r and /p it couldn't repair it. I'm actually using a prog called HD tune to find the bad sectors, but, it's going to take over 14 hours, I'll just do that over night, I'm doing a quick scan now, that shouldn' take to long. How do I mark the bad sectors from being read or written to?

Yep, that's way too many errors for an even remotely healthy drive. If chkdsk can repair the drive, it should mark those sectors automatically as not to be used, but if it can't repair it, it won't even attempt it. Probably a good thing, becuase that might killyour HDD even more.

Crap, I have two HD's installed one 120gb(the one thats dying) and a 80gb, I forgot how to change the the drives to make the 80gig the master drive and the 120gig the slave, I think it has to do with the jumper settings correct? If I'm wrong, do you know what to do?

First off, you can check for what they say on Western Digital's support site at http://support.wdc.com/.

You're right about the jumper settings. If you aren't sure about the jumper settings for your HDD (model WD1200JB), go here: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/ph...ated=1037222945. Make sure you attach the correct EIDE Interface cable for each HDD.

You can also view the specs of the HDD and so forth from

http://www.wdc.com/wdsearch/search.aspx?sq...JB&sl=en-US&sc=. You may be covered by warranty if you check and you may be able to call Western Digital for extra support. Maybe they'll point you in the direction of their diagnostic tool or hopefully a free hard drive. Their contact page is at http://www.wdc.com/en/company/contact.asp.

If you buy a new one, I find http://www.newegg.com to be very good. Keep us all up to date just in case if there's anything else we can all do for you. Good luck.

Wow, thanks for all the info. All I need now is the serial number for the drive, I don't want to shut the PC down to open it up cause it might not go back on, I see a ton of programs to show the serial but it's all c++ scripts that I have no idea to compile. Do you know of any prog that will tell you the serial?

EDIT: I found the serials with the WD diagnostic tools.

No problem. Hope you get everything working again. At the very least, save the MVP game to a secure place.

Since i have a ton of storage with me, what I would do is back up every important thing on your primary HDD on a storage device other than your 2nd HDD, unless if you have Windows installed on the HDD (or until you put Windows on the HDD). If you have Windows installed on the other HDD, I would just copy everything important to the 2nd HDD. You can buy an internal HDD enclosure case that connects to your machine via USB and you can get a cheap internal HDD to put in the case. You can use this as the temporary storage. Or if you have a pen flash drive that can hold everything you want to save. Or if you get a new HDD (for the Windows install) then save the important things on the 2nd HDD.

The stuff I would look at to save would be of course your MVP folder and any appropriate items, any customized content, any Office templates you created, any documents and pictures, any favorites, along with maybe a snapshot of everything you have on your desktop, program files folder, along with any printers if any and so forth. But, I'm sure you know all of this but it doesn't hurt to double check.

By getting the internal enclosure HDD case, you can take any internal HDD and attach it not only to your machine but to any machine that has a USB port and you can use it as an external HDD or you can even swap it with any other type of internal HDD. I got mine for about 80 dollars in Best Buy several years back.

Also, after you get everything resolved and if you still have two hard drives in your machine, it is good to have Windows installed on the 2nd HDD as well as the primary and it's good to save customized content and files on the 2nd HDD also. This way, if the 1st HDD fails or dies, you can always boot up your machine by using the 2nd HDD if needed and you will always have your content. The OS on the 2nd HDD doesn't have to be the same as the primary. It can be Win2k or something ... as long as you can use it to temporary boot, so in the very least you can still go on the Internet to troubleshoot your problem, e-mail the respective parties and of course to go to MVPMods.com.

But, I would contact Western Digital and see what they can do if anything. It may be cheaper to buy a HDD from a local store or NewEgg. If you need it now, go for a local store. If you can wait for a few days, try NewEgg.

Glad to help. Anything else, just let me know. Good luck.

Can't thank you enough for all the info you've provided, I backed everything up on a 4gb flash drive, it appears my HD's warranty expired last Nov. my luck, I'm better off just financing a new PC, why spend 100 bucks replacing a HD on this old crap when I could spend 8 or 900 on a brand new PC. What do you think of this one.

First off .. I think you stay up way too late ... hah

Second ... I personally wouldn't touch a gateway with a 50 foot pole but that's just me. I never had one but I heard too many bad things from others. I'm partial to Dell / Compaq. I customize and buy it online. But then again, if you're home pc isn't working, I don't think I'll buy online at a public machine. With that being said, let me look at the specs.

Wow. I don't know that much about Vista but knowing Microsoft, they'll work out any bugs. But gosh darn it. 500 Gigabytes? Will you ever use that much? The memory is important so having 2 GB expandable to 4 GB is nice. The monitor looks good too. And then you get a printer with it too. I say go for it and snatch it up before the deal is over and before they sell out. If I didn't have 29 computers in my house, I'd buy that Gateway too. :wall: Maybe I'll add Gateway to my Dell / Compaq list.

I say go for it. :yeah: Nice find. Best of luck with everything.

P.S. With the extra big HD, you'll have no problem at modding for MVP and then giving us all the best Mets & Cyclones everything.

It's called insomnia...lol can't sleep for nothing.

I heard that about Gateway too, I always liked Dell, I have and had them in the past and never had any problems with them. I tried customizing one from Dell and HP with the same specs and they were going for $1900, so I just try and get this one.

29 computers?? I'm guessing you use them for work.

Nah. I was just kidding. I have closer to 4 and one laptop. I use one of the machines and the laptop for my side work. But, I wouldn't mind having that Gateway in my collection. 500 GB and 2 GB Ram. Wow.

If you do get rid of your old computer, you can always keep the HDD, mouse and keyboard, along with other things. And you can always take every other screw out of everything in the computer so you have extra screws in case if you either a) have a screw loose or B) need extra screws for other equipment. An extra mouse and keyboard comes in handy if you, family or friend needs a temporary solution. And if you are able to do so, get one of those internal HDD enclosure case so you can always copy/back-up files from/to a HDD without having to open the machine. It will come in useful when helping family or a friend too.

Take care. Good luck. And I'll see you in the Mets forum. lol

LOL ... so does everyone else I guess ... needing more that is.

The first HD I had was 420 MB and now they sell Pen Flash Drives with more than that. What a world we live in
