Markakis Done for Season

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Baltimore Orioles announced earlier today that outfielder Nick Markakis has suffered a fractured ankle and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

Markakis, 24, has seen his power drop tremendously this season, averaging just one home run in every 86.5 at bats. Last season, the left-hander averaged one home run in every 22.6 at bats. He hit .275 with just four home runs and 45 home runs this season after hitting .307 with 26 home runs and 103 RBI last season.

After posting an OPS of .901 in 2007, Markakis saw it drop to just .757 this season.

Bonds Returns to the Bay

SAN FRANCISCO - The all-time home run king, Barry Bonds, is set to return to the ballpark he helped

build tonight for the first game of a four-game set against his new team, the Chicago Cubs.

Bonds played 15 seasons with San Francisco, joining the Giants in 1993 as a free agent out of Pitts-

burgh. Bonds grew up in the Giants clubhouse, navigating the lockers with his father, Bobby Bonds,

and his godfather, Willie Mays. With that history, coming to San Francisco just made sense.

When Bonds arrived, rumors circulated that the team was on the verge of moving to Tampa. All talk of

that stopped as Bonds led the Giants to a 103-win season, falling a one-game playoff with the Atlanta

Braves shy of making the playoffs. The slugger won his third MVP that season, and would go on to win

four more with San Francisco, all consecutively from 2001-2004.

"I love San Francisco," Bonds said in a press conference earlier today. "I grew up with this team, and

I was happy to spend 15 years here with these great fans. But it's a business and changes were made.

I understand that, but I still miss playing in front of all these people."

Bonds is still putting up numbers this season, hitting .321 with 21 home runs and 64 RBI in 84 games

with the Cubs. His OPS is still near the top of the league at 1.028, including a slugging percentage of

.609.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PT. Bonds is expected to play at least three of the four games.

I'm glad you asked that.

Lewis won't be getting any MLB records as the bar is set way too high - 130 by Rickey Henderson overall, and 118 by Lou Brock in the National League.

However, it is possible that Lewis could reach both the franchise record and record since moving to San Francisco:

Franchise (including New York years) - 62 by George Burns in 1914

San Francisco (since 1958) - 58 by Billy North in 1979

With his current mark of 43, Lewis has posted the highest total since Brett Butler stole 43 in 1988.

As for the trade deadline, I'm thinking about doing a write-up on it. If I do it, it'll probably be tomorrow or Thursday.

Glad you're still following :D

LOL sf, nice call on Broxton a couple of pages back. Pity you couldn't get out of LA with a win. Just hang on to that wildcard lead, the SF fans need playoff baseball worth following!

We surely won't give up without a fight, but the offense really needs help. There's a possibility of a deal before the deadline, but we won't be pursuing any one-year plug-ins if it means sacrificing the future.

But as bad as the offense has been in this dynasty, I have a feeling it's going to be worse for the real Giants next season...

Ouch. Tough luck on that Dodgers series, especially that 17 inning affair.

FIVE hits over 17 innings...14 hits over the 35 innings in the series. Gonna have to do better than that if we're going to hang on to this wild card lead. Big series coming up.

Thanks for checking in guys :D

bonds really makes the cubs lineup scary looking.....

That he does. They don't have a left-handed threat without him. Personally, I'd flip Ramirez and Soriano, but either way it's not one I'm looking forward to facing. It's surprising to me that they have the record they do.

As good as our pitching staff is, I'm not confident they can hold them to the two or three runs needed to have a chance with our offense. Guess we'll soon find out (as soon as I get some food in me anyway) :D

Nice trading deadline update!

-- Wow, I just realized how fast this dynasty is going!

Thanks - glad you liked it :D

Yeah, it's going at a decent pace so far. The path I chose with this dynasty was to play just the first game of every division series, then manage the rest, until the second-half started.

Now I'll be playing every game of a series against a team that I'm battling for a playoff spot with and managing the rest, so it will probably begin to slow down a bit.

Not to mention, my original goal was to play this until we made it to the World Series; which, to be honest, I don't see happening with this team. So 2009 looks very probable.

But we'll see where it goes - there's a lot of baseball to be played! :D

Cubs Win 5-4 in Bonds Return

Misch homers, but Wilson blows second save of second half

gamefinalzn6.jpg

bondsqu9.jpg

Barry Bonds returned to a long standing ovation tonight, with chants of "Barry" lasting throughout each at

bat. He grounded out in his first at bat and would finish the day 0-for-four.

linewv1.jpg

Pat Misch catches a line drive from Henry Blanco out of pure self defense in the second inning.

lewisnx1.jpg

After two solo home runs by the Cubs, Fred Lewis brought the Giants back to even with a two-run blast in

the third inning.

mischxv0.jpg

I think Misch has figured it out. If you're a Giants pitcher, and you don't want a losing record to go with

your solid ERA - learn to hit. Exactly like he did in the fifth inning when he blasted the first home run of his

professional career. He is now hitting .351 on the season; a coincidence that he's 10-4?

wilsondh3.jpg

With a 4-3 lead to protect, Brian Wilson failed to shut the door for the second time since his selection to

the All-Star team, surrendering a two-run home run to Ronny Cedeno to put the Cubs up 5-4 in the ninth.

Cedeno's second home run of the game gave the Cubs a 5-4 lead, which would be the final score.

Bonds celebrates with his new teammates as the Cubs handed the Giants their fourth loss in four games

since the break.

Pat Misch, hitter extraordinaire, who woulda thunk it?

But seriously, I hope Misch comes up big if/when he gets the chance in the rotation, he showed promise, but couldn't get much run support. If I recall, his ERA was pretty low and most of his starts were near quality.

I don't see him as part of the rotation next year, unless Sabean trades one of either Lowry or Sanchez, but he could be converted to a reliever to help out as a lefty specialist in the 'pen. I know that the Giants need a lefty to help out Taschner.

I really can't see Sabean getting through this offseason without Lowry or Sanchez going somewhere to start rebulding this offense. If Sanchez stays, I'd move him to the pen before Misch though - I'm not sold that Sanchez will develop into a guy that can get through the lineup multiple times; but I think he can be effective in the seventh and eighth innings.

Neither one has had a large enough sample size yet though - Misch was under 50 innings this season and Sanchez under 100 over his two years in the league. No time like '08 to figure it out.

Giants Pick Up First Win of Second Half, 9-7

Lewis drives in four for San Francisco

gamefinalqj4.jpg

bondsyz2.jpg

lewisid7.jpg

Fred Lewis blew the game open in the fourth inning with a bases-clearing double, giving the Giants a 6-2

lead.

Tim Lincecum was stellar again, allowing just two runs on seven hits over seven innings. He also went

one-for-one at the plate, walking and scoring twice.

finalgi7.jpg

The Cubs were able to pull within two after scoring five runs over the final two innings, but Brian Wilson

induced a groundout from Bonds to end the contest. Wilson picked up his first save in three chances since

the break.

Grudzielanek Headed to Atlanta

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Royals have announced a trade that would send second baseman Mark Grudzielanek to the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Royce Ring.

Grudzielanek, 38, has spent the last two seasons with Kansas City, winning a gold glove in 2006, the first of his career. So far this season, the right-hander is hitting .280 with eight home runs and 51 RBI. He is in the last year of his current contract.

Ring, 27, has spent the past two seasons at Double-A Mississippi, but could move to Triple-A Omaha when he joins Kansas City tomorrow. He has posted an ERA under three while throwing over 100 innings in each of the past two seasons in Mississippi. More impressively, Ring has seen his BB/9 rate drop under two (1.82) this season while raising his K/9 over seven (7.62).
