Surprised no one's made a topic on it yet. Most of the DL mirrors are slow but the torrent is holding up for me. (~300k)

DL options: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Torrent (x86 desktop cd iso): http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ubuntu-7.1...386.iso.torrent

I wish I could be excited about Gutsy Gibbon, so I'm going to be =)

This is the first distro that I'm even considering installing on my MB. I think that it'll run quite nicely too, but I sway to the other end of the Unix family most of the time.

I know a little about ubuntu and all, but is there a specific advantage of downloading the entire system instead of just, for example, downloading some of the ubuntu-specific software (like firefox) onto your regular system?

Different memory management, different file system different look and feel coming in 3.0, in Ubuntu it tends to be almost unusable. I use alternatives such as Opera in Linux because it is poorly done for Linux.

Well, ok, let's take out firefox - in general what are some of the specific advantages of installing an entire system such as ubuntu instead of just installing some of the seperate programs made for ubuntu on your PC?

Ubuntu is linux...that's pretty much it's advantage.

If you want a free alternative to PC and you don't want to deal with constant virus threats, most spyware and bloatware, install Linux. It's open source and tends to have fixes quite quickly to problems that do arise.

I use OS X personally, it's a Unix build I do prefer. Unlike common perception it too is open source but of course you do have to pay for it. I like this as an alternative to Windows. All in all, it's what you prefer that makes the difference as to what you get.

Best thing to do is d/l the LIVE CD. Try it out and see if Ubuntu likes all your hardware. Nothing will be installed on your machine, the OS will run from the CD.

If you like things, then install to your drive. You can dual-boot with Xp like I do. Only reason XP is on my machine is for my games.

ok, sorry that i'm starting to turn into captain question, but i don't see the live cd download. i see different versions though, but i'm not sure what the differences are. i want the desktop version or the server version? and then those even break down to two versions.

You want the desktop version. Depending on your processor, you can d/l the 32 or 64 bit version. The LIVE CD and the Installation CD or the same thing.

A) There is no live cd up for Gutsy Gibbon.

B) It can run side by side with XP

C) Hardware is compatible, drivers work out of the box 99% of the time.

D) Software is not compatible most of the time, there are linux alternatives to pretty much everything and for gaming there is Cedega, which is Wine which can run windows programs, but not all of them.
