The Yankees blew the game open in the bottom of the 4th when the captain Don Mattingly lead off with a homer in the upper deck in right to tie it at 1. In the same inning Luis Polonia singled with runners on 1st and 2nd to give NY a 2-1 lead. Mike Gallego capped the inning with a 2 out 2 run single down the right field line to make it 4-1 off Ranger ace Kevin Brown. Gallego would add another 2 out RBI single in the 6th to make it 5-1. The Rangers loaded the bases in the 8th off Bob Wickman, but he got slugger Dean Palmer to hit into an inning ending double play. donniebaseball23
Game 2 TEX(Rogers0-0) @ NYY(Abbott0-0) Bombers sweep, trounce texas 8-2 Catcher Mike Stanley drills 2 run job off Ranger hurler Kenny Rogers in the 4th NewYork - Well not much to say other than the Yankee bats staying hot. Every batter in the lineup had atleast one hit in this one. The Bombers scored 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, and 2 more in the 7th to cruise to an easy sweep of the Texas Rangers. That would be more than enough for Jim Abbott who went 7 full allowing one run on 9 hits. The Yanks hope to continue the offensive barrage as the Tigers come to town for a 3 game weekend set. It'll be the veteran Mike Moore for Detroit and Melido Perez for the Yankees on friday night. donniebaseball23
Game 3 DET(Moore0-0) @ NYY(Perez0-0) Tigers take it, moore blanks yanks 2-0 Travis Fryman scoring on Lou Whitakers' sac fly in 6th NewYork - You could call Mike Moore the Iceman, cause he chilled the Yankee bats tonight tossing a 6 hit complete game shutout handing the Bombers their first defeat of the 94 season. The Yankees never really threatened at any time in this one though Melido Perez kept them in it for the most part. The Tigers got two straight singles in the top of the 6th. Then a Tony Phillips fielders choice put runners at the corners, the 37yr. old vet Lou Whitaker hit a deep sac fly to right driving in Travis Fryman with the first run of the game which would prove to be the difference. Another Tiger veteran Eric Davis led off the 8th with a towering dinger to left, though it wasnt needed thanks to Mike Moores' gem. The Yanks hope to bounce back tommorow afternoon when the send Terry Mulholland to the hill to face fat boy David Wells. donniebaseball23
Game 4 DET(Wells0-0) @ NYY(Mulholland0-0) Yanks win, Gallego plays hero again Shortstop Mike Gallego punches grand slam to right off Tiger southpaw David Wells NewYork - The Yankees bounced back after friday nights defeat to take their 3rd win in 4 games. Starter Terry Mulholland began the game giving up a 1st inning blast to big Cecil Fielder. The Yankees would strike right back in the bottom of the frame when Danny Tartabull slashed an RBI double in the right center field gap off Tiger Starter David Wells to tie it at 1 after 1. The Tigers went back on top in the 5th with a solo shot from backup catcher John Flaherty to make it 2-1. Again however the Bombers came right back in the bottom half when the first 3 batters reached to load the bases for the number 9 hitter and improbable hero Mike Gallego who continued his torrid start to 94 with a grand slam to right, putting NewYork up 5 to 2 where it would stay thanks to good bullpen work by Bob Wickman and closer Steve Howe who stayed sober enough to record his 1st save of the season. On a side note it seems the chicken aint working for Wade Boggs who continues to struggle at the plate. donniebaseball23
Game 5 DET(Belcher0-1) @ NYY(Kamieniecki0-0) Bombers keep on rolling, win 5-3 Paul O'Neill went 2 for 2 with 2 walks and 3 RBI in Yanks win NewYork - The Yankees wrapped up the first home stand of the season with a 5-3 win over the Tigers though the score looks closer than this one actually was. After retiring the first two batters of the game Tiger pitcher Tim Belcher gave up a single to Don Mattingly and a double to Danny Tartabull who were both driven in on a Paul O'Neill single up the middle to put the Yanks up 2-0 early. Detroit answered right back with a Travis Fryman RBI single in the top of the 2nd to cut the lead in half. The Bombers added another on O'Neill's first hr of the year, a solo blast to right making it 3-1. It stayed that way till the bottom of the eighth when, after Mattingly doubled leading off the inning and Tartabull grounded out they intentionally walked O'Neill, only to have Matt Nokes hit into what should have been a routine double play though Travis Fryman threw the ball past Whitaker at second and in to right field allowing a run to score and O'Neill to move to 3rd. The very next pitch went to the backstop allowing O'Neill to score putting the Yanks up 5-1. That was pretty big considering the Tigers hit back to back jacks by Tettleton and Trammell in the 9th, but Steve Howe got the next to batters out to give the Yanks 2 out of 3 against Detroit. They now go to Chicago to begin the first road swing of the season. donniebaseball23
Game 6 NYY(Key1-0) @ CHW(Fernandez1-0) Yanks squeak by, win 5-3 Left fielder Luis Polonia makes the play of the game robbing WhiteSox Robin Ventura of a hr Chicago - Despite giving up 3 runs on 9 hits through 6, the Yankee offense helped Jimmy Key win his second straight start of the season. Paul O'Neill, Don Mattingly and Danny Tartabull each homered tonight coupled with solid defense propelling the Bombers to their 3rd consecutive victory. Manager Buck Showalter dismissed the notion of considering benching future Hall of Famer Wade Boggs who continues to struggle at the dish hitting just .154 on the season thus far, after going 0 for 5 tonight. donniebaseball23
Game 7 NYY(Abbott1-0) @ CHW(Alvarez0-1) Chisox blow it in 9th, win it in 10th Player of the game Tim Raines slaps game winner to right in 10th Chicago - Starter Jim Abbott wasn't great in this one but not terrible either going 6 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, 2 of which were earned. The Yankees like they have done so often this season, opened the scoring in the top of the second pushing across 2 runs off Whitesox starter Wilson Alvarez. However the Whitesox took a 5-3 lead into the 9th , but closer Roberto Hernandez blew his second save this season, giving up a 2 out 2 run single to Mike Stanley pushing this one into extras. In the bottom of the 10th, Lance Johnson led off with his second triple of the game and two batters later Tim Raines, who went 3 for 6 with a homer and a double, singled to right off Sterling Hitchcock to win it for Chicago. donniebaseball23
Game 8 NYY(Perez0-1) @ CHW(Bere0-0) Sox drub bombers, 11-3 The Big Hurt put hurting on Yanks with two big flies in this one Chicago - The Whitesox just absolutely destroyed Yankee pitching today smashing 17 hits and 6 homeruns to take 2 of 3 from NewYork at home. Frank Thomas, Julio Franco and Joey Cora of all people went yard twice each in a pure laugher. Melido Perez has now lost his first two starts of the year, and Jeff Reardon and Xavier Hernandez didnt help much getting tattooed themselves out of the pen. The lone bright spot for the Yanks today was a 3 run hr by Paul O'Neill who continues to swing a hot stick as does captain Don Mattingly who went 4 for 4 to raise his avg. to .500. The Bombers move on to Detroit after losing their first series of the young season here in the windy city. donniebaseball23
Game 9 NYY(Mulholland1-0) @ DET(Wells0-1) Bombers bit by tigers, drop 3 straight Paul O'Neill strikes out for the second time against Tiger hurler David Wells Detroit - The Yankees have now lost three in a row thanks to a masterful performance by Tiger southpaw David Wells who went 7 full, surrendering just 4 hits and striking out 3. His only blemish came in the 5th when he gave up a solo shot to Yankee catcher Mike Stanley who drilled the first pitch of the inning onto the left field roof here at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers scored 2 runs in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd, and 1 in the 4th, all off of Yankee starter Terry Mulholland who lasted just 5 innings. The score would remain at 4-1 as the Yankees failed to produce another base runner after that while Detroit closer Mike Henneman clocked his second save of the season.
