donniebaseball23
Game 50 - KC (Milacki 2-4 6.80) @ NYY (Hitchcock 0-1 4.24) Bombers top royals, 4-2 Don Mattingly rounds the bases in the 6th after belting solo homerun to put the Yankees ahead for good NewYork - The Yankees jumped ahead 1-0 early in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by DH Jim Leyritz off Royal righty Bob Milacki. However in the top of the 2nd the Royals came right back to take a 2-1 lead on ninth place hitter Greg Gagne's long homerun to left off Sterling Hitchcock, who made his first start of the year replacing injured righty Scott Kamieniecki. After the Gagne homerun, Hitchcock settled in and kept the Royals off the scoreboard for the next 4+ innings. After tying the game at 2 in the bottom of the 3rd, the Yankees regained the lead when Don Mattingly led off the 6th inning with his 8th homerun of the season making it 3-2. They would add one more the next inning to make it 4-2 leading the way for Bob Wickman in the 8th to set up Steve Howe in the 9th for his 11th save. donniebaseball23
Game 51 - KC (Appier 1-6 8.03) @ NYY (Key 5-1 3.39) Appier baffles yanks, tosses 3 hitter A dejected Matt Nokes strikes out against Kevin Appier in the 9th NewYork - One run is all Royal hurler Kevin Appier would need today as his stuff was oustanding tossing a complete game, 3 hit shutout for a pitcher who struggled with just one win and an ERA over 8 coming into the game. Yankee starter Jimmy Key also had a very solid outing going 8, while giving up eights hits and one crucial mistake to Kansas City right fielder Dave Henderson who took Key deep to the opposite field in right to lead off the 3rd for the games only run. donniebaseball23
Game 52 - KC (Gubicza 2-6 5.10) @ NYY (Abbott 4-4 4.83) Bombers battle back from behind, win 8-7 Player of the game Randy Velarde, who went 4 for 5 with 2 homeruns and 3 RBI singles here w/ 2 out in the 9th to keep the Yanks alive NewYork - Well both starting pitchers struggled from the get go as each team scored early and often with both teams combining for 32 hits today. With the game tied at 3 in the top of the 5th, the Royals broke it open with a four run inning, capped off by a Vince Coleman homerun off southpaw Jim Abbott who went 6 innings coughing up 7 runs on 12 hits. It was 7-4 in the bottom of the 7th when the Yankees would score 3 times to tie the game, then after the Bombers loaded the bases in the ninth off Hipolito Pichardo, ninth place hitter Pat Kelly drove a first pitch breaking ball back up the middle into center field to win the game for New York. The Yankees now ship out to begin a difficult 11 game road trip starting with 3 in Texas, 4 in Toronto, and then finishes out with 4 more in Baltimore. donniebaseball23
Game 53 - NYY (Perez 3-1 5.09) @ TEX (Dettmer 3-1 7.48) Yanks win in texas, 5-1 Wade Boggs knocks in the first two runs of the game off Ranger pitcher John Dettmer in the 5th Arlington - The Yankees got another fine outing out of righty Melido Perez who went 6 and a third scoreless innings. Ranger starter John Dettmer breezed through the first 4 innings, then ran into trouble in the 5th after New York got two straight singles and a sac bunt to start the inning, Yankee third baseman Wade Boggs drove in the first 2 runs of the game on a single past Texas first baseman Wil Clark for a 2-0 lead. Then they got more off a 2 run jack by Paul O'Neill to make it 4-0. The Bombers took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the 9th where the Rangers eventually picked up a meaningless 2 out run to make the final score 5-1. The Yanks now send southpaw Terry Mulholland to the hill to face Ranger ace Kevin Brown. donniebaseball23
Game 54 - NYY (Mulholland 4-4 3.52) @ TEX (Brown 3-5 5.65) GONEzalez slams rangers past yanks, 7-6 Juan Gonzalez launches 5th inning grand slam off Terry Mulholland Arlington - Yankee starter Terry Mulholland wasted little time getting himself in trouble in this one giving up a lead off homer to Ranger center fielder David Hulse to start the game. By the time the 1st was over Texas led 2-0. It was 3-1 Rangers in the bottom of the 5th when Texas rattled off 3 straight singles off Mulholland to load the bases for Juan Gonzalez. With nowhere to put the slugger, Mulholland challenged Juan and lost horribly as Gonzalez proceeded to crush an opposite field grand slam for a commanding 7-1 Texas lead. However the Yankees never quit and scored 3 in the top of the 7th to chase Kevin Brown from the game at 7-4. The Bombers made it interesting in the 9th when they loaded the bases with one out for pinch hitter Matt Nokes who drove in two on a single up the middle off Ranger closer Tom Henke to make it 7-6. Then Henke got the next batter Bernie Williams to roll one over to second baseman Jeff Frye to start the 4-6-3 game ending double play spoiling the Yankees come back hopes. donniebaseball23
Game 55 - NYY (Rogers 5-5 5.43) @ TEX (Hitchcock 1-1 3.90) Bombers slip by Rangers, 3-2 Yankees turn big double play to get out of the 8th Arlington - This one was a pitchers duel early as both hurlers for the most part cruised through the first 5 innings. The scoring opened in the top of the 6th when DH Danny Tartabull crushed a Kenny Rogers offering deep into the left field seats for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half Texas cut the lead in half with a Juan Gonzalez RBI single for a 2-1 Yankee lead. The next inning the Rangers tied it with a RBI double from David Hulse. In the top of the 8th however the Yankees would take a 3-2 lead when Danny Tartabull who drove in all 3 runs, hit a sac fly down the left field line scoring Bernie Williams. Wickmans' 1-2-3 8th set up Howe for his 12 save of the season. The Yankees now head north of the border to Toronto for 4 games starting with Jimmy Key against the 'Jays Dave Stewart. donniebaseball23
Game 56 - NYY (Key 5-2 3.14) @ TOR (Stewart 5-5 5.28) Carter lifts Toronto to 3-0 win Joe Carter crushes his 2nd homerun of the game in the 6th Toronto - Jimmy Key pitched a hell of a game tonight with two exceptions, they would come by way of 2 costly solo homeruns by Joe Carter. He blasted one to lead off the 4th and another with one out in the 6th to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Then in the 8th, Carter would drive in his 3rd and the games only other run on a double down the left field line to make it 3-0. Thats all the veteran Dave Stewart would need as he scattered 8 hits over the full 9 innings while striking out 5 in a solid performance. The 'Jays look to keep it going sending lefty Al Leiter to the mound tomorrow to face the Yanks Jim Abbott. donniebaseball23
Game 57 - NYY (Abbott 4-4 5.40) @ TOR (Leiter 2-3 6.79) Jays 4 run 1st sinks yanks, 4-3 The Blue Jays Paul Molitor reaches home just under the tag of Yankee catcher Mike Stanley in the 1st Toronto - Tonights game was a tough pill to swallow for the Yankees as starter Jim Abbott suffered a horrific 1st inning giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, 3 of the runs coming off the bat of Toronto first baseman John Olerud who lauched a bomb high around the foul pole to right for the quick 4-0 lead. Mike Huff's 4th inning single would be the only hit Abbott would allow over the next 6 innings. Blue Jay starter Al Leiter wouldn't give the Yanks much as they could only manage a run in the 2nd, a run in the 3rd, and one more in the fourth to pull within one at 4-3. Despite the Yankees out hitting Toronto 13 to 8 for the game, it just wouldn't be enough as Abbott's disastrous first inning would be too much for the Bombers to overcome. These two teams are now tied for the division lead with two more to go in this series. The Yankees however weren't about to quit and broke out for 5 runs of their own in the top of the 4th to make it a 3 run game. The Yankees then tied the game the very next inning with 3 more runs off Toronto starter Todd Stottlemyre. Once again Carlos Delgado would put the Blue Jays back out in front 9-8 in the bottom half of the 5th with an RBI single. It would stay that way untill the 8th when Wade Boggs tied the game again with a sac fly making it 9-9, but once again the Jays would take the lead when Joe Carter singled home Robbie Alomar to make it 10-9 Toronto going into the 9th. However the Bombers would have a 7 run inning of their own before the night was through rocking Blue Jay closer Darren Hall for 5 runs on 5 hits then adding 2 more off reliever Woody Williams for the 16-10 hard fought victory with both teams combining for 37 hits. donniebaseball23
Game 59 (Mulholland 4-5 4.21) @ (Guzman 5-3 4.84) Yankees edge Jays 7-5 Paul O'Neill smashes his 14th homerun of the year Toronto - Yankee starter Terry Mulholland was slightly better than the Jays Juan Guzman tonight going 7 innings while surrendering 4 runs on 9 hits, striking out 6. Guzman went 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 8 hits striking out 2. Each team had 11 hits and 3 homeruns in the game, but it was the Toronto bullpen that failed them tonight allowing an additional 3 runs through the last 4 innings which would mean the difference as the Bombers take the final 2 games to split the series. They now head to Baltimore for 4 with the Orioles. donniebaseball23
Good to see this back up again! thanks man, been working alot Game 60 (Hitchcock 1-1 3.53) @ (Mussina 4-6 4.22) O's smack yanks, 7-2 The Orioles Rafael Palmeiro crushes a homerun to center off Sterling Hitchcock Baltimore - Sterling Hitchcock was not good tonight in his second straight start in place of the injured Scott Kamieniecki. He lasted just 5 innings giving up 6 runs on 9 hits. He seemed to cruise through the first 3 innings being up 2 runs but would hit trouble in the 4th when Baltimore right fielder Jeffrey Hammonds launched a towering 3 run homer to left to put the O's ahead 3-2. The Orioles scored 3 more runs in the 5th off homers by Mike Devereaux and Raffy Palmeiro for a 6-2 lead. Tim Hulett added a solo shot in the 6th to make it 7-2 which is where it would stay as the Yankees could only scratch 2 early runs and 8 hits total off Mike Mussina who went all 9 with 0 K's. Key's only blemish came by way of a two run bomb by Oriole first baseman Rafael Palmeiro who hit his second homer in as many games which was also his 19th of the season. Key got plenty of run support as the Bombers lit up Baltimore starter Ben McDonald for 7 runs on 11 hits knocking him from the game after 4 innings. The Yanks didn't score after that but it didn't matter as Key kept the Orioles offense in check throughout. This time it was Jim Abbott leading the way giving up just one run while striking out 3. These last two games by the top end of the rotation have been the best back to back starts put together by Yankee pitchers all season. New York's offense, led by captain Don Mattingly who went 3-5 with 3 RBI, pounded out 4 runs on 13 hits off O's starter Jamie Moyer who has his record run to 5-6 on the season. Melido Perez only went 6 innings but gave up a mere 3 hits and one run, while the Yankee offense was boosted from two solo jacks by Bernie Williams and Danny Tartabull, and by Wade Boggs who added a sac fly and RBI single all off Oriole starter Sid Fernandez who beat the Yanks earlier this year at the stadium. Tonight it was southpaw Terry Mulholland who shut down the Brewers for 7 innings while allowing only a solo homerun to BJ Surhoff in the 3rd. The Yankee offense would supply plenty of support, smashing Milwaukee starter Teddy Higuera for 5 runs in the first two innings and adding one more in the 4th. The Brewers could only scratch across one more run in the 9th off reliever Jeff Reardon. However those pesky Brewers would not go away as they got 3 in the top of the 6th off Kamieniecki to make it 5-3. Milwaukee then tied it in the 8th on a two run homer to right by Jose Valentin off Yankee setup man Bob Wickman. Milwaukee center fielder Darryl Hamilton led off the 10th with a triple off Sterling Hitchcock, and again it was Valentin coming through with an RBI single to give the Brewers a 6-5 lead. In the bottom half, closer Mike Fetters came in and got the lead off guy to fly out. With one out the Yankees then rattled off two straight singles setting the stage for backup catcher Matt Nokes, who already homered earlier in the game, to bomb a Fetters fastball to right for the 3 run walk off homer to give the Yankees their fifth straight victory.
