RaysFTW
If anyone has read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, I need major help for symbols. I need some symbols and need to analyze them along with the use of language by Twain. If anyone can help me with this, please post here. Thank you! Yankee4Life
I read that book a few times. It is an American classic.
Sean O
Kids are so cute sometimes. 1). Everyone has read Huck Finn. It's pretty much a requirement for existence in any major US school. 2). Sparknotes, people, sparknotes. As if this isn't your first stop after you get an assignment, or when you're freaking out at failure. http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/huckfinn/index.html 3). AstroEric is going to yell at me for mentioning sparknotes. I'll tell him he should go back to his Radiohead album and stop bothering poor students. Yankee4Life
What I would do is read the book and I will promise you Kazmir26 that you will not have any questions about it. You must remember that this took place at a time before slavery was abolished. It's a good book and Twain did a great job here.
RaysFTW
Well, I understand the book and all, although I didn't read the book. Motifs, Themes, etc. Just the symbols such as the Mississippi River is quite hard to interpret.
ronmexico
The River represents freedom in the book. On the raft they are completely independant of responsibilities and they determine their own course of action. Jim looks towards freedom and Huck escapes his drunkard father. I don't know of anything else really in the book about that.

Motifs, Themes, etc. Just the symbols such as the Mississippi River is quite hard to interpret. sigh. Read. The. Book. Twain didn't write it just because he was bored or wanted something to talk about, he wrote it for a reason. Sometimes, books are important. Sometimes, you can learn valuable lessons from these books, ones that will help you greatly in your life. And, I have to question whether or not you understand the book if you haven't read it, and if you're coming to a baseball forum to ask for help on its symbolism. jhanke
Gawd, I have not taught that book in years. The River is a good symbol, as is the raft. Are you looking at traditional symbols? if so then check out spark and Cliff. also try a google search. they are not bad. It has been too long to get something right now (i just got home and am preparing to teach 1984 and Animal Farm, so not thinking about Huck right now) I will check back to see what you have going. Maybe the cover of his copy is really well illustrated. I've never actually read Brothers Karamazov, but I fully understood the philosophical and theistic ramifications of the Grand Inquisitor because of the fold-out illustrations. I've never heard of the book, but now that I've observed the cover I do understand all it has to offer to me in the fields of God-related philosophies. I've read the Sparknotes on it and I've had to do study questions on it that were quite explanatory?
ronmexico
So why don't you atleast read the response to the reading on sparknotes, that part tends to get into symbolism and such.
abc006
What grade are you in? I'm not trying to insult you or anything, I just find it sort of weird that anybody above 6th or 7th grade would have this assigned. Don't get me wrong, it's a great book, but I always got assigned books that were a bit more advanced and complex. Then again, my school is the kind of place where people you think they're geniuses come to, and then realize they've got a C average.

No, I'm not in any "mentally disabled" classes. I'm actually in something called I.B. (International Baccaulerate). It's a program like AP, but like 5 times harder. :)

Actually we've had to read some quite challenging novels such as The Grapes of Wrath, Macbeth, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Oedipus Rex. :)

Ok - so that isn't that bad. Except for All Quiet on the Western Front, I would classify that one as below that reading level. Actually, none of those are too challenging. I mean come on, this is supposed to be an upper level college course in high school!

People have a tendency to call it "I B stressed out," and I don't blame them. If you're in something like IB, shouldn't you be actually, uh, reading the book? Yeah, I should be reading the book, but I truely have had no time to read the book. I have 7 core classes including 2 History classes along with Biology II and Spanish IV. :(
