So , once you beat the game , is there any incentive to play the game again? Someone on another forum posted a critique of GTA IV.

I'm not a huge fan of Grand Theft Auto. I got my giggles from the top-down games on PC and PSone over a decade ago and found Grand Theft Auto III and its subsequent PS2 spawn to be more of the same, but buggier. Needless to say, I wasn't among the choir joyously welcoming the franchise to the HD era. I have to admit, GTA IV's swelling hype that seemed to sway respected coworkers who previously shared my general dislike of the series planted in my mind the idea that this go round things might be different. With early impressions of gameplay filtering into the office, I almost believed that Rockstar had crafted, for once, a polished product worthy of the celebration.

That impression lasted all of one second when I saw the game played in front of me, and a week's worth of personal playtime confirms my conditioned reservations with regard to modern Grand Theft Auto. Grand Theft Auto IV is the same as its PS2 precursors, plagued by mostly identical design and execution faults that kept me from drinking the preemtive rounds of Kool-Aid in the weeks before IV's release. Its flaws are flagrant and copious, but Grand Theft Auto IV is nevertheless the most critically acclaimed video game of ever and this fact is hurting my brain.

Grand Theft Auto is and always has been instantly entertaining in the sense that seeing someone get kicked in the nuts is hilarious comedy, but any deeper critical look at the games reveals both myriad technical flaws and a sucking void of substance, unbecoming traits passed on to Grand Theft Auto IV. Not one of the game's play mechanics is especially well done, most are sloppy at best. There is no depth to Grand Theft Auto gameplay. There are no systems to master. There is nothing but a multitude of shallow options.

Grand Theft Auto IV fails to deliver gameplay with more depth than an average YouTube clip spread by IM, and moreover fails technically with camera control issues, constant framerate hiccups, disjointed animation, and sloppy controls.

It's not that I don't get why everyone loves GTA--I get it. But as someone that feels video gaming is more than a brainless distraction, I take serious issue with the assertion that Grand Theft Auto IV is as good as it gets. Video gaming is better than this crap.

I think what makes IV different from the rest is the multiplayer...in the unlikely event that you get bored during the missions , you can just dial up the phone and run some multiplayer. I don't know how appealing the game can be after you beat it though , I beat San Andreas and have only run it twice since , even though I didn't complete it at 100%.

I bought this game today. Such a sweet game. One question though, how do you pick up hookers? And where do you pick them up? Just curious. lol

Editorial: The Overlooked Importance of Nintendo:

Ever since the PlayStation legitimized the adult gaming demographic, Nintendo has dealt with a perceived lack of maturity in their development style. The company's colorful, family-friendly titles, despite being of generally high quality, clash wildly with the best efforts of other publishers that tend to center on darker themes. As the industry has skewed further and further toward entertaining adults, Nintendo has remained rooted in their philosophy of delivering fun experiences for all ages. While the criticism has died down a bit of late many still view Nintendo as behind the times and lament that they never seem to debut a "mature" IP. While this is understandable considering the age of many hardcore players it needs to be noted that Nintendo's emphasis on the family actually plays a key role in our industry. In fact, if Nintendo moved toward older players, it would have a crippling effect on the industry as a whole and their contribution would be difficult– if not impossible– to replace.

Much of the criticism thrown at Nintendo throughout the years centers on the idea that they need to "grow up". The audience that bought Super Mario Bros. 3 in droves now craves deep, complex titles in HD with serious online play. A simple feeling of fun is still important, but a broad feature set has become a large part of gaming as well and Nintendo has failed to evolve with their competitors in this regard. The basics of playing a Nintendo title have changed little from 1988 to 2008. Solid gameplay, a simple narrative, familiar settings, and an inviting difficulty curve define the Nintendo experience. Familiarity breeds contempt, so it's easy to see why those that have bought and beaten Nintendo titles for decades have in some cases begun to seek out different approaches. But in their zeal for a bigger and better experience gamers have lost sight of Nintendo's role in our industry because their perspective is centered entirely on themselves. The part Nintendo plays in gaming is just as important today as it was 20 years ago: Nintendo produces gamers.

Franchises such as Mario and Pokémon are unparalleled at reeling in the young and hooking them on our hobby. Zelda and Metroid take them a step further, but remain relatively easy to pick up and enjoy. To put it simply, Nintendo welcomes newcomers into gaming and shows them the ropes. No other developer can produce such deep experiences without intimidating the player. Nintendo has consistently done this throughout the years and that tradition continues today. Parents feel safe when buying Nintendo software, they understand exactly what they're getting and can entertain their children without fear of exposing them to certain themes, imagery or language. While avid gamers might scoff at the importance of that, they're assuming that the entire industry can survive and expand without a way to consistently indoctrinate new generations of players.

Not really. It's just I haven't played any of the GTA series, so I have no idea what to do and how things can be done.

I got drunk in GTA and it was fun driving back home because I got a star so I was being chased by the cops while I was drunk. :lol:
Taxi is the best thing for GTA. Not only will it help you get the game done quicker (so you can get that 30 hr achievement) but it also helps you avoid those situations.

Where do I get 'smart shoes' for that packie mission?

NVM, never saw loafers at Perseus before.

Rog, I just completed 3 leaf clover with 12 hours and 15 mins playing time. Do you think I will get the achievement that has it under a certain time at my rate?

Whats your percentage? 60 is the percentage for the story (not including the side missions). It is about 90-94 missions depending on who you kill. As long as you take taxis to the points for now on you should be fine. You look like you are moving as a good pace now anyways.

Yeah Sandlot you're gonna be well under 30. I only have 10% more to go to beat the game, however I leave the game on a lot, like when I'm watching Met games..so if the game is paused does the timer still tick?

I'm not going to spoil the ending, but for anybody that hasn't gotten to this part yet, when it comes time to choose between "Deal" and "Revenge", please go with Revenge.

Deal is the most depressing, sad and emotional ending I've ever seen in a video game. It's actually affected me personally and I don't know what to do. I want to start over from 0.00% again, but I just don't know. Deal is the worst way to end GTA IV, do NOT pick it.

I'd like to make a save file at that point so I can do both without having to start all over again.
