Hanley Ramirez is the best hitting shortstop in the game right now, but his defense (like Derek Jeter's) leaves much to be desired.

I like Troy Tulowitzki a lot--if he can improve his offense, damn, he's going to be one Hell of a two-way player.

Jose Reyes is a pretty good all-around shortstop, though...possibly. Probabilistic Model of Range has historically been really unkind to his defense, but the Fielding Bible's Plus/Minus is a lot nicer to him. I don't really know what to make of his defense, to be honest...his hitting/on base ability and his speed are already well-documented.

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices presented in this poll in addition to Troy, though Jeter's on the decline, so I would imagine that in one or two years he's going to slip from the discussion of best shortstops, particularly when he finally moves to another position (though that will sap most of his value, since the point is he's a really good offensive shortstop)...

.291 33-2B 24 HR 99 RBI is not good enough, I remember when you were happy if you SS could hit better than your starting pitcher

Troy's overall line is pretty good, but his home/away splits aren't very pretty, kraw; he also had a pretty high BABIP at Coors (.370).

Again, I have no problem putting him in the top three or four shortstops right now; that's how much I like his defense, and I admit that he certainly hits a little better than the average shortstop. But this is an age where offensive totals are inflated across the board relative the past, so it's not necessarily enough for a good shortstop to hit better than your starting pitcher.

The point, kraw, is that if Troy can improve his offense relative to the top shortstops next year, then I would have no problem crowning him unquestionably the best shortstop in the league. Right now, it's really too close for me to call, which is why I said you can't really go wrong with any choice (except maybe Jeter; everything he can do [offense], Hanley basically does better right now).

Has the list changed since I last saw a few minutes ago?

Several shortstops are missing from the list.

I'm surprised JR isn't winning ... especially since he won the MVP and so forth. I thought he was supposed to be good.

Since someone said Nomar, I'll say A-Rod.

<<< But, from the list, I voted for Hanley ... I'd prefer his offense and Jose's defense and base running (though his d wasn't as great this past year)

~~~~~~~ EDIT ~~~~~~~~
ESPN's 2002 & 2001 best SS list: http://espn.go.com/mlb/spring2002/ssrankings.html .. I guess I was right with A-Rod being the best :biglaff:
Yeah.
Hanley plays in one of the worst RH hitting ballparks in the majors. Imagine if he played in Coors...
Troy was tied-14th in GPA (And that's purely a bat-standpoint, doesn't include SB and such). Not saying that that isn't good, but it's far from upper echelon of the hitters, just barely above average (Ofcoarse, he's also the top fielder by far).
Hanley defense was a lot better last year too. The loss of Perry Hill obviously hurt. It'll be really interesting to see how he does next year. I mean, he was still sub-par last year (-6), but he was even worse than Jeter this year. And the main aspect that was touted from him as a minor leaguer was his defense.
uhh... what about ryan theriot :D ? realisticly... id go with jroll. i mean he did win the mvp and all
Its true that the MVP award winner is arguably the best player in the league, but in this case that is not true. Rollins is definitely a good shortstop no doubt but Hanley Ramirez to me is by far the best SS in either league at the moment.
