krawhitham
One of the all-time classic threads. The kid was wrong in quite literally every single way, including his main premise, that Abreu was more "consistent" than Pujols, since Albert had like a .002 variation in batting average over a 4 year span. I don't think he was banned, I think the universal response of "you're an idiot" pushed him away from the site. I gotta track that thread down. abc006
john mcdonald had a glove...e-i-e-i-o john mcdonald hands down :]You're serious, aren't you? We're not talking about fielding, which in that case wouldn't even be McDonald anyway, we're talking about all around. McDonald had a 61 OPS+ last season. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a negative VORP. (I don't have a BP subscription. I'm working on that. Then again, I've been working on that for the last two years...) Don't tell me - McDonald is more consistent.

abc006
What is VORP?Value Over Replacement Player. For a more detailed explanation, ask Murray Chass. Just kidding about that last part. It's basically a statistic that values the amount of batting production you make over a major league average replacement player. The results can be surprising. On one hand, Albert Pujols is obviously going to have a high VORP. He's way above average a replacement player. On the other hand, that second baseman with a six figure salary who's batting .240 and walks about 10 times a year? He might actually have a negative VORP - in other words, replace him with your Miguel Cairo - well, that's a bit much - a replacement player not Miguel Cairo, and he'll probably actually produce more than that other guy. Lucas
uh, why is Jeter there? terrible defensively, and only slightly above average offense.
abc006
uh, why is Jeter there? terrible defensively, and only slightly above average offense.Uh, because he was tied for fourth with most win shares in '07 and was fifth in the entire league last year in win shares. You know, he is actually a good hitter. I wouldn't call .322/.388/.452 and a 122 OPS+ "slightly above average." I hope Derek isn't going to reverse Garrett Anderson route - Anderson was underrated then became overrated when people started talking about how underrated he was. I think Jeter's becoming underrated once people start talking about overrated he is. You know, he's probably a hall of famer and all. Just letting you know. D-Unit
Jeter is a great SS, get over it. I know he's not the best, but he is still a top SS in the league. Just because some people overrate him doesn't mean you have to underrate him.
